On Foot Holidays - Catalonia by Mr Jumbles, 8 May 2016

Spectacular scenery and great hiking in La Garrotxa in Catalonia

My children, aged 10 and 9, did a 6 day hike in La Garrotxa in Catalonia. The organisation on the part of On Foot was faultless and we very much enjoyed the trip on the whole. There was one day when we got quite wet but other than that the weather was wonderful. The hike contained some fairly steep uphill sections but, by and large, the kids managed it all quite easily

Rating for tour operator:

On Foot worked out daily hiking itineraries for our trip and we pretty much followed these. The itinerary contained detailed route notes and a GPX file which I used on my iPhone in case the notes were difficult to follow. On Foot also organised our accommodation at the end of each day and the hotels took our bags to the next hotel. All of this worked well and there were no issues to speak of. On Foot also supplied cultural and history notes about the area.

An outstanding organisation for walking holidays

Two of us, 65+ males, have just walked the Umbrian route from Spoleto over the Sabine Hills to just north of Rome. The route was quite taxing with a fair amount of climbing but the 5 days were well planned and just the right intensity for reasonably fit senior walkers. The maps and the route descriptions for each day were excellent and the accomodation in agriturismi and charming B&Bs in wonderful hill-top villages was of a high quality. The ...

The special feature of On Foot is the care they put into preparing the route and the extraordinary level of service they provide the client.

Rating for tour operator:

A very capable caring tour operator that puts major effort into customer service and preparing the walks. I will certainly travel with them again. There are at least 6 more yomps in their catalogue I would like to do.

On Foot Holidays - Andalucia by Andalucian, 29 Mar 2016

Exactly what we hoped for

This was a self-guided walking holiday where we walked between hotels carrying a day pack. The rest of our luggage was transported "out of sight". The walks were well described and quite wonderful. The hotels were, without exception, excellent without being over the top. Each one had its own quirky charm.

On Foot Holidays' organisation was excellent. From the knowledge base of the staff at the time of booking all the way through to the holiday itself. Excellent choice of hotels, thoughtful board choices, attention to detail around "day off" options and potential taxi needs through to very detailed walking notes and maps (certainly needed in our case). Thoroughly recommended.

A brilliant route through highly diverse landscapes rich in architectural, , agricultural, natural and historical features, well within the capabilitiesof a retired couple, with excellent guide notes written from the walker's line of sight, and maps,

For various reasons we took the risk of walking in late January. Despite a few rainy days and a great deal of mud we had a wonderful time. Various challenges such as rivers that had burst their banks, 'winter bournes' springing out of the hillside, and meadows churned up by the hooves of cattle and sheep, we were endlessly diverted by the ancient churches, manor houses and grand estates, picturesque villages, sweeping views and varied landscapes, ...

For various reasons we took the risk of walking in late January. Despite a few rainy days and a great deal of mud we had a wonderful time. Various challenges such as rivers that had burst their banks, 'winter bournes' springing out of the hillside, and meadows churned up by the hooves of cattle and sheep, we were endlessly diverted by the ancient churches, manor houses and grand estates, picturesque villages, sweeping views and varied landscapes, contrasting farming styles, old woodlands - and the very first primroses and daffodils. Although we are 78yr and 67yr old we found the route up and down the rounded hills and valleys easily manageable (with walking sticks), while the excellent notes and maps enabled us to relax and enjoy every step of the experience. The deep peace and quiet of places you would never otherwise reach, tucked away among folds of the hills, was a revelation. The choice of overnight accomodation in old inns, pubs and hotels added to our pleasure. We received a warm welcome everywhere, with provision for drying out boots and outer gear, ample homemade food, selections of local beers and ciders, and choice wine lists. The background information on points of interest whet the appetite without being over-whelming.

Rating for tour operator:

This is the second time we've booked a holiday through this company (previously walking along the Rhine valley with Australian friends). We highly appreciate the fact that the walking notes are written from the line of sight of the walker and this makes for great ease of reading the route. The notes are presented in short paragraphs, with indicative timings, and this format is a considerable aid to timing one's own progress. The maps provide good back-up information. The fact that someone from the organisation walks the route and uses the accomodation before the main season starts means that the notes are up to date and accurate, the taxi arrangements can be relied on, and that the personnel at the overnight accomodation are ready to welcome warmly even the arrival of wet and muddy walkers. Before we left we found the contact with the operator to be thoroughly professional yet friendly, and the info pack well presented with sufficient but not over-whelming information. We enjoyed meeting one of their staff personally (since their office is in Salisbury where our walk began); and we appreciate that they genuinely welcome the feedback we provided on completion of our walk. We also appreciate the care that is taken to provide alternative routes for some of the stages, and the taxi arrangements that - given the short January days - allowed us to adjust the start point for the longer stages.

The route was well chosen and the notes precise and easy to follow as were the instructions on downloading the GPS software and using it. Our accommodation along the was exactly what we needed and our various hosts comments made it clear that On Foot staff were very familiar with both them and the route. We really appreciated the information supplied with regard to the route, countryside, hosts, local restaurants and sights. We've walked various long distance routes in a number of countries with different companies and On Foot Holidays tops the list. Thank you!

Rating for tour operator:

We can't recommend On Foot Holidays enough: they are very knowledgeable with regards to the actual route, the accommodation hosts and their services and also with the various places of interest along the way. They pass on recommendations from their past clients for restaurants, etc. which proved helpful too. Their notes, maps & luggage transfer service are excellent - the best we've had on all walks we've done and, above all, everything was handled efficiently and in a caring, friendly manner. We can find no fault with their service and thoroughly recommend them.

Fantastic scenery, great hotels and hassle free

Our self guided walking trip to Palma and the Serra de Tramuntana in Mallorca with onfootholidays was fabulous. The scenery was fantastic, the walking was exactly as described on the website and the walker's pack made the whole experience hassle free. The boutique hotels were all excellent and well chosen. This was our second trip with onfootholidays and we would not hesitate recommending the company to others.

It is important to mention we were holidaying in the middle of October in regards to the weather and surprisingly our comments about crowds but great temperatures for walking. A holiday we had always wanted to do having waited 50 years to see Pompeii and Herculanium. We arrived in Amalfi by ferry which was magical. The next part of the holiday was to walk from Amalfi to Sorrento. Because of Heavy storms and our own inclination we completed about 3/4 of the walking. Much of it was challenging for us because so much of it was straight up and down on concrete mule steps dating from the Middle Ages. But we managed it albeit slowly. We used excellent public transport to fill in the gaps. After the walking we stayed in Sorrento which we liked very much and visited Pompeii, mount Vesuvius, Herculaneum and the Palace of Popaea all of which we thoroughly enjoyed and would have liked second visits especially to Pompeii. Lastly we travelled by ferry to Capri where we spent 2 nights which was enough time to see the beautiful gardens at Villa San Michele, walk a little and go to the top of Mount Solaro by chair lift through the fog which was exciting.the weather had completely broken so we were unable to do and see the beautiful things we would have liked. Finally we attempted to visit the National Museum of Archeology on our way back to the airport - we arrived at its doors to find it was closed on a Tuesday ,( our fault -mentioned in our instructions but over looked in the last minute decision to visit it. )Our main disappointment. We were disappointed with the commercialisation of the Amalfi coast, the food in most restaurants was expensive and not thrilling and it was too crowded- fortunately not on the walks . None of these points were the fault of the company.

Rating for tour operator:

The holiday was well planned and presented by 'On Foot' . They were always helpful before we left and made every effort to accommodate our requests. Every eventuality seemed to have been anticipated. And most importantly for older walkers , we were free to walk or not walk as we chose at our own pace and alternative public transport was suggested for each day. The hotels they had chosen were good and comfortable and our luggage preceded our arrival at each hotel most efficiently. We would have no hesitation in recommending ' on Foot'
