Umbria with On Foot by JB, 8 Jun 2016

Challenging walk in glorious Italian 'wilderness'

Seven walking days through Umbria from Spoleto to Mompeo, most days not seeing another walker. Enjoying the challenge of navigating winding paths and tracks, with excellent detailed accurate notes (and a handy GPS for back-up). Nights spent in ancient hilltop towns and agriturismos consuming well-deserved wonderful 4-course Italian meals with wine (and losing weight!), our charming hosts committed to our enjoyment.

Rating for tour operator:

impeccable service – courteous, prompt and efficient during the walk and before (and we were a nuisance, changing our dates and plans several times due to unforeseen circumstances). Holiday passed without a glitch, every step of the walk and moment of accommodation went just as planned so our energy could be focused on climbing those hills and admiring the spectacular views. On Foot Holidays is highly recommended, we'll be walking with them again.

We have used On Foot several times before and are completely satisfied with their services. They take utmost care in the planning of the walks, the accommodation and the provision of general background information necessary for your travel in your country of choice. They know the people providing the accommodation, and have people on the ground in that country who are available should you require their help. Although it must be a large business they have the critical ability to keep the personal touch and ensure that you are looked after very well after a hard days walking. They take customer satisfaction as top priority and look for suggestions and comments to enhance future customer experiences.

Two Walks: Provence and Basque Country

My wife and I enjoyed two back-to-back self-guided walking holidays with Onfoot Holidays in May. The first was a 6-day walk on the west side of Mt Ventoux in France. The self-guided route was varied and scenic and all of the accommodations were first class. The trip was the perfect combination of good exercise and great food and wine. The second walk was a 6-day high ridge route in the Basque Country of Spain ending with a walk down in to Bilbao...

The second walk was a 6-day high ridge route in the Basque Country of Spain ending with a walk down in to Bilbao. The panoramic views were fantastic and encompassed almost all of the route. Again, the nightly arrangements with the food and wine were all an event in themselves. Some longer walking days made the evening's repast all the more enjoyable.

Rating for tour operator:

These were our 6th and 7th walks with Onfoot Holidays over the last 4 years. The routes are well-selected and planned to offer a great outdoor and cultural experience in lesser traveled areas of Europe. The staff has always been easy and fun to work with and everyone has gone out of their way to facilitate our getting to, from and between routes. They have chosen very worthy lodgings serving excellent meals which enhance the experience. And they do offer variations on each day's walk when possible to cater to different walking desires. If you like a good day's walk in a great environment followed by gourmet food and wine, Onfoot Holidays definitely fills the bill.

Rating for tour operator:

we were on a self guided walking holiday, just the two of us, and were extremely impressed with the information given to us - the details on how to use the trains, buses and ferries to get from the airport to Amalfi, the very detailed walking notes which meant that we had no problems at all in navigating on a whole day's walk, also we were given alternatives - shorter and longer options for walking, or if we didn't want to walk at all, bus numbers and timetables and ideas of places to visit. we have done several of these self guided trips with other tour operators and this was by far and away the very best we have had

Wonderful walking from Amalfi to Sorrento

Our holiday was superb. The views along the coast were sublime and the weather was very kind to us. We were very pleased with the places we visited, the hotels at which we stayed and the smooth luggage transfers. Amalfi and Sorrento were highlights though, in saying that, we loved Ravello, Praiano, Positano and Sant'Agata!

A great walking holiday with excellent support.

Our walk along The Lycian Way (From the mountain to the lighthouse)offered stunning views which exceeded our expectations. There was interest at every turn with mountains, coast, pomegranate and orange orchards, ancient ruins, as well as the flames at Chimaera. The accommodation provided variety of both style and situation, and the food everywhere was fantastic. We also felt secure in the knowledge that there was a local contact if we encountered ...

We had a marvellous time and were most impressed by the ease with which it all went.

Having never been on a self-guided walking holiday before we were impressed from the start with the service we received from On Foot Holidays. Every request or query was answered speedily and we were able to add extra nights to the itinerary wherever it suited. The instructions they provided for the walking routes were comprehensive and easy to follow. We will definitely use On Foot again.

Rating for tour operator:

On Foot Holidays is a small operator with the personal touch. They phoned on the day before our departure to wish us a happy holiday. Their local representative texted to welcome us to France and establish himself as our contact for any eventuality. Everything ran like clockwork. Customer service is clearly their absolute top priority.

More difficult than understood in advance

Loved the Dorset scenery, villages, etc. All beautiful. However the weather had been damp early, so the cow paddocks were extremely difficult to walk in. The climb along the supposed "carriage track" into Shaftesbury on the first day was so hard, since the track has been washed away! Several tracks were very overgrown. Loved the Dorset scenery, villages, etc. All beautiful. However the weather had been damp early, so the cow paddocks were extremely difficult to walk in. Some of the hills (eg Dorset Cap) were extremely difficult to climb in the mud. The climb along the supposed "carriage track" into Shaftesbury on the first day was so hard, since the track has been washed away! Several tracks were very overgrown. We wonder if the organisers have reviewed the tracks, signposts, etc, in recent times! We had difficulty following some of the instructions. On several occasions, we had to double back once we realised we were "lost". This added distance and time to the walk. On day 5, we started at Mapperton, tried to follow directions, then after an hour, found ourselves walking back into Mapperton! We were advised by the taxi drivers that most people do NOT walk the whole distance of the tour each day, instead they take the shorter options, for the same reasons we did. The last day, coastal route to Lyme Regis, is virtually impossible for people like us. Our young fit daughter walked with us on 1 day, from Cerne Abbas to Evershot, and even she found it difficult in the conditions.

Rating for tour operator:

Friendly when we met them before the walk. Didn't explain the difficulties nearly enough.

On Foot Holidays responded to this review on 07 Jun 2016:

Hi - you had rotten weather and that didn't help. We re-walk all our walks each year to check path condition and the quality of the directions, so that shouldn't have been the reason - in fact our Harriet walked the whole route this spring. The route is rated easy-medium, and maybe this is a little light. We will review this (together will all our routes) in the coming months in time for next year's offering. For now, we are sorry it didn't work for you, and will elarn from this.

On Foot Holidays responded to this review on 07 Jun 2016:

We will look at the grading of this walk for next year and are very sorry that you felt wrongly advised. The general reaction to the walk has been very positive, but we accept that it is not a walk for everyone.

An outstanding experience.

A self guided tour of SW UK. Excellent hiking terrain through rolling English countryside, quaint small towns, and friendly B&Bs. The latter were all outstanding and two cases exceptional accommodations. The tour was memorable, not only because of the terrain, but the unpredictable English weather. It led us to laughter as we'd switch from winter gear to summer gear in the span of ten minutes. Snow and driving rain to sunshine.

On Foot holidays has been, through hikes that my family and I have taken (Italy twice, Croatia, Spain, French Alps, and now the UK) an outstanding organization. They are professional, caring, organized, detail oriented, and address issues if they were to occur. To get a call letting us know that the B&B operator was going to be 30 minutes late and that they had made arrangements for us, was just outstanding. The self guided tour documents are clear, accurate, and very helpful. I will continue with On Foot Holidays for my next set of hikes. An outstanding organization.
