Fascinating cultural and wildlife experience

Although I'd been in Albania once before, it was only for a couple of days. This Naturetrek visit enabled me to see quite a lot more of the country. There was also a very interesting excursion into Kosovo (most whose people regard themselves as Albanian anyway). There was a great deal of wildlife to be seen, and I was particularly interested in some of the bird species; the guides made a small excursion on the first day so I could see the European roller, which I'd seen before but which is one of Europe's most beautiful birds. Our two guides were both knowledgeable and helpful, and the company more generally was excellent. The only downside was at Heathrow Terminal 3, both going out and arriving home, where the service was lamentable.

This was the third attempt of the so-called MAD4 - Glyn Hammond, David Ouvry, John Plowman and myself, so-called because our first Naturetrek trip was to MADagascar(!) - to do this particular trip, the others having been cancelled because of the pandemic (or pandemonium, as I prefer to call it!) However, Naturetrek, despite one or two minor slip-ups were most helpful throughout. The guides, one local and one British, were excellent.

Alderney is really a small island - less than 3 sq Kim’s I think! Leaders were able to give a very varied tour, including much information on both the natural history and history of the island? As an old OAP, I have found the staff patient of idiots who don’t necessarily understand some modern procedures - if /when I could not cope with procedures, they were either happy to talk me through, ( or send me everything in the post!)

Excellently paced tours of Navarra and Sierra de Guara in Norther Spain, focus on birds but with wonderful landscapes, orchids, butterflies and in the first week, an introduction to the little known but first-class wines of Navarra.

Great fun with two quite different groups in each week-long tour. The same tour leader for both - top-class ornithologist and general wildlife guru - and a selection of fascinating places to stay and explore from. Our favourites were a boutique hotel in a hilltop town, and a more rough and ready hostel up in the mountains. Warm welcomes everywhere, partly because the tour leader was so well known and liked. Naturetrek never disappoint. They've diversified - the first tour was billed as 'Birds and wines of Navarra', but they always provide top-quality experiences with first-class tour leaders who really know their stuff.

A bird watching holiday in Cotodoñana and Extramedura.

The tour was led by 2 guides with great enthusiasm and amazing knowledge and field skills. We would never have seen most of the birds without them. The accommodations were excellent.
