A different, fun and educational day trip
This was 'Snorkel Safari & Fish Photography with Jack Perks'. This took place at Dosthill Quarry near Tamworth, Staffs. The safari was a careful exploration of the margins of the quarry, where the clear water allowed good views of native fish and ones which had been introduced (some large koi, the odd goldfish and apparently there is a big sturgeon somewhere down in the depths). The safari was a careful exploration of the margins of the quarry, where the clear water allowed good views of native fish and ones which had been introduced (some large koi, the odd goldfish and apparently there is a big sturgeon somewhere down in the depths). Jack is an excellent friendly, knowledgeable guide; the Quarry staff were also friendly and helpful - I only had to be seen struggling to put on a pair of fins when I was brought out a bigger pair. The swim was relaxed and slow so that nothing was missed: I particularly enjoyed joining a shoal of tiny roach fry for a while and seeing a young pike. Once out of the water, Jack presented a selection of small fish which he had caught earlier and placed in a small aquarium tank, so that we could practice taking photos of them close up. Everyone in our small group had brought underwater cameras of various shapes and sizes (although this is not a requirement) and Jack was very helpful with using these. My very cheap (under £30) camera achieved some reasonable video footage, I think, for a complete novice. In short, a really enjoyable, energising day out, suitable for anyone who is reasonably confident in the water and able to use a snorkel. Well worth the drive from East Anglia!

Birds birds birds
This was a full day on the coast and in the reed beds, the woodland and the heath viewing fauna and flora. The focus was on birds. I couldn’t believe how quickly our guide was able to set up his scope so that we could all view the different birds. I was particulary pleased to see a whimbrel, Dartford warblers and stone curlews. We walked a good 6 miles over the course of the day so I was glad to have my walking boots on.

A fun and informative experience!
Jack was a fabulous instructor and extremely knowledgeable. He put everyone at ease and ensured we all came away with some fabulous photographs to capture our snorkelling experience.

What's the flower of the day?
It was a Naturetrek trip to 3 areas in Bulgaria, mainly looking at wild flowers and incidentally at insects, bird and animal life. Despite less than ideal weather it was a wonderful trip, with a friendly and interesting group of people, led by a very helpful Bulgarian guide who made sure we made the most of every day of the holiday.

Naturetrek as its name implies, specialises in nature-focussed and nature-friendly holidays. Despite a tricky post-Covid period of some change and uncertainty in arranging flights they were very helpful. They use small local accommodation and provide a very good service.

It was organised very effectively giving us four days of birding and led by a very competent and professional guide who lived locally. We stayed in an lovely converted farmhouse with large rooms, extensive grounds with farm animals, a swimming pool and very friendly staff. Breakfast and dinner were excellent, included local produce and were accompanied by a choice of local wines. The locations chosen on the trip were ideal without too much travelling in hot conditions to sites that provided good views of a variety of species. A mid-day picnic lunch comprising a variety of cold food and drinks was prepared daily.

Naturetrek were meticulous in providing pre-departure details and ensuring that you were well prepared for the trip. The flights were at the right times and included the right baggage allowances. The transport provided during the trip was just right, seating six guests in comfort with easy access during frequent stops. The guide was excellent; by living locally he knew exactly where to go and was very good at ensuring everyone got to see everything that was found.
