From Alexander the Great through history to ex Russian colonies, a trip through the ages of a little known region

A diverse program of history, culture, religion and hiking activities with a small group of well travelled and interesting people. From getting off the beaten track and being the only tourists around to the well trodden paths through the Silk Road cities. Mountains to deserts, modern cities to ancient ruins. This trip had it all.

Adventures in the Hindu Kush

Imaginative, challenging, eye-opening, colourful, uplifting, it ticked all the boxes for those who crave something different, somewhere different and who are prepared to forego some home comforts to achieve it. Huge mountains; awesome scenery; unbelievable driving; lovely people; good food (apples, dried apricots, walnuts; bread); not-so-good food; colour; cold; photographers' paradise, challenging toilets.

They have a niche market which appeals to those who have no wish to sit by a pool all day and would rather have a memorable experience

An outstanding experience.

We traveled to North Pakistan and met people and saw sights that were extraordinary. In a small group it was possible to get a real feel for where we were without impacting negatively upon communities or places. Our experience in the Kalash Valley and Hunza felt unique. I felt safe at all times. It was a privilege to be there.

Outstanding pre trip support. Informed staff who really know the trips - first hand - and are willing to talk through clients' hopes and reservations realistically. Very good support with the pre trip bureaucracy - visas etc. Protocols very clear. I felt safe and well provided for at all times. The tour was imaginative and stimulating. It fed my spirit of adventure.

Laos Unlocked

An outstanding experience led by Mark Steadman who has an unrivalled knowledge, understanding and sympathy for the country. We went to places which other trips would not go, we did things which other trips would not do and we met people that other trips would not meet. This included planting rice, visiting a buffalo farm, swimming in a cave and watching dawn rise over Wot Phou. It was an unbeatable experience.

breath-taking views down the Karakoram Highway

A trip down an ancient Silk route with relaxation in Srinagar. The focus was on mountain experience. A breath-taking jeep ride, a scramble over land slides followed by a steep climb to "Fairy Meadows" with an unforgettably detailed view of the face of Nanga Parbat. It was a living experience with an expert local guide.

Rating for tour operator:

I feel only a practiced travel company could deliver this multi-faceted package. It was a fully international group whose varied expectations was well-gauged by our guide. The hotels were primed on what services were important and the group was primed on possible shortcomings, for instance the provision of breakfast. We were kept well informed on our responsibility towards local customs of dress and sensibilities. For those of us who fell short on the physical side of the program, our guide showed absolute patience and gained full marks for bringing out the best in us.

Adventure in China, Pakistan and India

Starting in the western Chinese town of Kashgar, a major cross roads on the ancient silk route, we explored this area before crossing into Pakistan over the Khunjerab Pass. The journey itself was terrific. Northern Pakistan deserves to be a destination of its own. Dramatic landscapes of huge mountains and glaciers, warm, friendly people and a fascinating history makes it a fascinating place to explore. Heading south onto the Pakistan plains, the Mosque at Islamabad and the old town of Lahore contrast well as the new capital versus a very old civilisation. Crossing the land border into India, walking between the famous border gates, is an experience not to be missed. Amritsar, which is fast becoming an Indian tourist hotspot, is unique. Finishing up with a few days lazing on a houseboat in Kashmir before returning home lets you down gently from a fascinating adventure. Wild Frontiers is THE company to use if you are going to Pakistan.

Detail about the trip, pre-trip information and assistance together with visa assistance is outstanding. During the trip, the tour leader and local guides were simply brilliant. I could not imagine anything being better. The group I travelled with were the best group I have ever travelled with. What's not to love?

Our guide was at all times informative and interesting which really brought the various places to life. The Golden Temple at Amritsar was unforgettable. The Wagah ceremony at the border was chaotic and fun and well-managed. The houseboat on Lake Dal was a peaceful and restful end to an exciting holiday. The scenery and mountains were stunning with wonderful photographic opportunities in the ever changing light. The small group became a cohesive unit with opportunity for individuality also. Highly recommended.
