Kanchenjunga Circuit in Nepal by Jonty, 20 Dec 2022

Memorable month spent hiking around the world's third highest mountain

The Kanchenjunga Circuit was an epic trip, real adventure travel. Just getting to the start of the trek involved an internal flight from Kathmandu, and 10-12 hours of driving along 'interesting' roads. The three weeks of hiking that followed to circuit around the Nepalese side of Kanchenjunga was hugely varied, from tropical, banana growing, lowlands to ~5,000m above sea level with views of huge mountains in every direction. November was the perfect month to do it, with blue skies almost every day, no rain at all, and relatively few people around. It was pleasant during the day and cold at night, with the lowest temperatures about -10C inside the tents, so a decent sleeping bag is needed. There are lodges almost all of the whole way round the circuit now which is helpful for warmer dinning rooms and some facilities (4-5 of them had electricity for charging devices) but camping allows the Mountain Company to control the quality and hygiene of the meals (very important when travelling in remote areas) and the new 3 person tents provided were excellent. The scenery was spectacular and the track was generally well formed and straightforward to walk. There were basically no flat parts so a good level of fitness is required for the 5-8 hours of walking each day. It is a remote part of the world but there are many villages and guest houses so it didn't feel that remote at times. The itinerary was well designed to minimise issues with altitude. The Kanchenjunga Circuit is an excellent choice for those looking for a varied, and challenging long hike in the Himalaya, without the crowds of the Annapuna or Everest regions.

Rating for tour operator:

This was the second time I've travelled with the Mountain Company and I wouldn't consider any others for hiking in the Himalaya. Their attention to detail and responsiveness is better than any other travel company I've used. Their itineraries are well designed and frequently reviewed to ensure that they are accurate and work best with the conditions on the ground. Given the pace of change in the Himalaya, particularly the construction of new roads along former tracks, this is really important. I've found them very responsive, before the trek in terms of planning and advice, during the trek if any issues occur, and afterwards in seeking and responding to feedback given.

Far West Nepal Exploratory GHT Trek

This trek was a true new route exploratory trek in western Nepal. Each day offered a new experience and beautiful scenery. Visiting a 900 year old Monastery and many rural villages and their people were just a few of our experiences. The Mountain Company UK provided excellent guidance, meals, and support throughout our journey. I highly recommend this Company for their thoroughness and superb service.

Luxury Everest Base Camp, Nepal by Jerry, 2 Dec 2022

wonderful Everest Base Camp Experience

We did the luxury Everest Base Camp trek at the very start of the fall season. This was a bucket list trip for two friends in their late 60's. Somehow, I think we appreciated the beauty and ruggedness of this region more than we might have had we been younger. It was a amazing journey every step of the way.

The pre trip and actual trip support and guidance from the Mountain Company team was just amazing. We are so glad we found Roland. Our guide and porter were equally fantastic. The whole experience was kind of life changing for me. I've been back now almost two months and think about it every day. I am grateful to the Mountain Company for helping us make this trip happen. I would never even entertain again going with anyone else.

We were really lucky with the weather, and had blue skies and sunshine for the majority of trek which gave us amazing views. Having completed this trip I now completely understand why it is classed as strenuous!! If the sun is shining there is no respite from the elements and the walking is hard. That said, this made the trip even more rewarding, and the whole group made it to K2 Base Camp and the Gilkey Memorial.

Rating for tour operator:

I spoke to a number of trekking companies before opting for The Mountain Company to arrange a private group trek to K2 Base Camp. I was really impressed by all aspects of their organisation, from the pre-trek admin and guidance through to the arrival in Islamabad. Their local Agent, Jasmine Tours, manages the logistics in Pakistan and managed to get us away a day early from Skardu during the Eid Festival (no mean feat). We were aware that other trekking groups struggling to get documentation and porters for their trips but TMC who have operated treks in Pakistan for a number of years and have established relationships meant it all ran smoothly for us. Our leader Nat Wilson was exceptional, our local Guide and Porters were also great, but our cook Zulfi kept us fuelled by producing the most amazing meals for us.

A1 trekking to K2

We had a three week walking trip to K2, camping every night and walking across the Baltoro glacier. Having previously been to Everest Basecamp, there was a level of expectation management that this would be a different trip but ,TBH, no amount of prep would have made a difference, this was totally different. On Everest there were comfortable nights in nice tea houses, with lovely food and war rooms. This is not that trip, it is tough, the walking is harder, the camping is harder, and there is very few respites. BUT, and it is a massive BUT, it was incredible. The views are stunning, the experience amazing and the whole trip just incredible. All helped by walking with lovely people both in our group and supporting us. Without them it wouldn't have been the same.

Rating for tour operator:

All the organisation was spot on in general. In particular the provided UK guide that walked with us was amazing. There were some teething problems with the Islamabad parts of the trip but from when we left to get to Skardu until we retuned everything was well organised, any issues dealt with well and it made for a marvellous holiday.

Roland was extremely helpful from the pre booking experience to ensure the trip was right for us. Pre trip we fired lots of questions his way as it was the first experience of this type of trek for the majority of the group, all queries, questions and anxieties were answered personally and promptly by Roland. The guidance for the admin of flights, visas, trekking permits etc. was really helpful and smoothed the complex process. The contacts and experience The Mountain Company have years of taking clients on these trips ensures the itineraries are very well designed and the best local operators, guides, cooks and postering teams are used. We saw plenty of other groups disappointed and having difficulties from using other operators cutting corners, not having the correct paperwork or too tight itineraries to accomplish their trips. Our international leader Nat accompanying us was brilliant. She had lots of experience and expertise and cared that we all had a great safe and healthy experience. Her expertise helped navigate the the very fluid situations that affect adventure travel. The K2 base camp trek was a trip of a lifetime for us. The trip is certainly off the beaten path path in very rural Pakistan completely out there once the walking starts. The scenery it utterly incredible and breathtaking, so many of the highest mountains of the world in one place. The walking is certainly challenging on the rough rocky the terrain it goes over for the majority of the time walking up and down on the Baltora Glacier. That and 17 days camping certainly make it a challenging and very rewarding trek. We were fortunate to have superb weather on our trip, this made the mountain visas unbelievable and a record breaking year for K2 sumitters. It did have the added experience of making sever very hots days which took us by surprise. Overall I would highly recommend this trek, Nat and Roland were brilliant, I would certainly recommend and use The Mountain Company again.

From the early planning process to the pre-trek check, questions were addressed quickly and completely by Roland and The Mountain Company team. Upon arrival in Nepal through our departure, the trek far exceeded expectations. Examples include our excellent guide and porter, intra-country travel, the lodging arrangements, safety protocols, the well designed itinerary (which enabled a couple of novice trekkers with limited experience at altitude to acclimatize to the increasing elevations without problem), wonderful meals, insightful advice regarding Nepal, culture, trekking, the geography, etc. Even the weather was fully cooperative! Many thanks to The Mountain Company for making this such an amazing experience!

Extraordinary trekking in Ladakh

The Ladakh Sky Trail was an amazing and very recommendable experience. The scenery was extraordinary and must be a dream for geologists. The trails are mostly on rocky or sandy underground, and nice to walk. One section of the trek goes through a remote gorge with more than 250 river crossings. This is definitely a highlight of the trek. This trek is a perfect choice if you like remoteness and dramatic scenery.

Our guide Almas and the local crew were very competent and a fun team to be with. We always felt in safe hands and enjoyed the time with them very much. The organisation was flawless. Also the pre-trip information provided everything we needed. This was my second trip with The Mountain Company. Both times everything was really perfect.
