Wessex from Neolithic to Georgian Eras and Hadrian's Wall from Roman to Medieval Eras

We participated in two tours with the Peter Sommer Travels group that focused on Neolithic and Roman sites, with a few more modern sites that were tied to the overall historical theme. On the first tour we visited locations in Wessex that included Avebury, Stonehenge, Sarum and Bath. On the first tour we visited locations in Wessex that included Avebury, Stonehenge, Sarum and Bath. On the second tour we visited the remains of several Roman forts and museums near Hadrian's Wall in northern England. Additionally, we hiked several miles along the wall at various locations. A particular highlight of the first tour was access to the inner circle at Stonehenge, and a highlight of the second tour was seeing a 2000 year old Roman shoe pulled from the mud at Vindolanda.

Hadrian's Wall: A Great Tour

We were accommodated at Langley Castle in Northumbria. From there we travelled east to the mouth of the River Tyne and Wall's End and then over the next four days to the western end of the Wall at the Irish Sea. Museums, forts and the Wall itself were the highlights of the trip. Some strenuous walking but taken at a reasonable pace that even the 85 yer old on the tour was able to keep up. Cruising the Dalmation Coast

We spent seven days aboard a gulet cruising from Split to Dubrovnik. The combination of the archaeology, the food and wine experiences, the swimming and the generally relaxed atmosphere made for a very enjoyable tour.

Fabulous, Fun, and the BEST way to see Crete

We explored 7000-10,000 years of Cretan history and were introduced to some of the best food, olive oil, and wine ever! The accommodations were wonderful, inventive and inviting.

The professionals at Peter Sommer Travels are amazing. They are well organized, provide an outstanding travel and education experience, and go out of their way to make everyone feel comfortable. Our tour guides, Maria and Michael, were phenomenal. Not only are they highly trained archaeologists who bring life to the past in creative and fun ways, they use that history as a foundation to introduce you to present-day Crete. I still dream about the wonderful food!

Have been on Peter Sommers Cruises before and find the experience excellent and would do it again if the times suit our calendar. They look after the detail and make sure that you are looked after. As always the trip was well organized, intelligent, friendly and the food was great. I would and have recommended them to others. For people who do not like organized tours or cruises this was fantastic and met all our expectations.

And apart from guiding she was a fun and inspiring person that created a wonderful atmoshere.

We spent a week on a beautiful gulet with a talented service oriented crew (including a fabulous chef). The Gulet was comfortable and we were accompanied by two fantastic academics: one british archeologist and a local Greek guide who took care of all our needs, gave us interesting background history and couldn't have been more enjoyable along the way (at meals, on visits to sites and just hanging out together). The other guests were lovely interesting people and even though some of the sites were not big tourist magnets, there were enough small gems to keep things interesting. We only wished there had been a bit more physical activity as prior tours we've taken allowed for more walking/hiking etc and the sea was a bit too cold to swim much this particular week. The tour was well planned and executed and our Greek guide handled everything smoothly, no matter what the issue. We would definitely recommend the tour.
