I chose a Peter Sommer Travel tour because I’ve always been drawn to learning about archaeology and history in England. It was through a random web search that I discovered their “Exploring Hadrian’s Wall” tour. I honestly cannot think of any way that it could have been better! This was the first time I’d tried an organized tour. Everything about it was seamlessly positive. Having Peter himself as co-leader was a delightful bonus. Paul was an inexhaustible source of knowledge and so patient with so many questions. What I liked most about this tour was the perfect blend of historical information/experience and the relaxing times at the many local pubs and restaurants. Peter’s logistic skills are exceptional. I appreciated the.fact that there was always flexibility built in to the tour so that you had options if something like a challenging hike might be too challenging. Our minibus driver Dave was another delight. Everything about this tour was in balance. Just the right blend of learning, local experiences, and relaxed guidance from the leaders. I highly recommend Peter Sommer Travels.

Both Peter and Paul did an excellent job. They were knowledgeable, flexible, patient, and helpful. The group atmosphere was fun and relaxed while still educational because of their personalities.

We had a wonderful trip. The food and accommodations were very good and also very interesting....no run of the mill hotels! Our mountain top aerie overlooking the Libyan Sea was amazing. And we had a dinner that could have been cooked by the Minoans....in the pots that they would have used! Visiting the sites with working archeologists made a huge difference in our understanding and new knowledge of the ancient inhabitants. Everything we saw came to life for us!

Heinrich and Maria are very knowledgeable about everything we saw .....and that we ate. They spent many hours arranging the trip so we could get a sense of the progression of the different civilizations of the island....and planning the meals....always delicious. They are caring and made sure that any issues were resolved satisfactorily for all. And I must mention that they were FUN! It was such a wonderful trip I have signed up for Exploring Sicily next year! I am sure I will be delighted again.

Very well organized, great local guides, main tour guide was very knowledgable of the historical contexts and subject matter. Nice accommodations, great food. Enjoyable group. I would highly recommend this tour and this tour operator.

Peter’s travel team arranged a beautiful, educational, as well as very relaxing trip. We were so fortunate to have two expert guides, as our local guide Tassos, is a specialist in Byzantine archaeology. Our expert guide, Tony Spawforth is an accomplished author and expert on classical history. He was delightful and had a great sense of humor. This was our first time on a gullet, and we thoroughly enjoyed the barefoot experience, delicious family style meals, camaraderie with fellow passengers and guides, and being pampered by the excellent crew. Peter Sommer’s cruises are definitely a repeater and we are already planning next year’s cruise.

If someone had told me that climbing and sliding and crawling up and down hills and vales along the remaining stones of Hadrian's Wall on a rainy, misty morning would be one of my most memorable life experiences, I would have thought them crazy. But there I was, walking through history with each step. All the sites we visited on this tour, from Roman camps to medieval castles to monastic settlements, were brought to life by Paul, our guide, with his vast knowledge. And what a thrill to observe archaeological excavations in process. Our accommodation was first class, each meal provided us excellent food in an interesting location and the van trips took us through green countryside and old villages, all of importance within the context of understanding the long history of the area. This was truly one of the best travel experiences I have had in many years.

The tour developed a theme of discovery and preservation by highlighting not only the wall and its remains but the efforts of later visionaries, such as Armstrong, to preserve it. The commentary provided throughout by our guide was almost encyclopedic in nature and each site was carefully explained in detail. All details of the trip appeared to proceed smoothly and without problems, which is the mark of very carefully planning and excellent day by day management. Peter Sommer Travels is one of the best in the business in my opinion.

Cruising the Cyclades with Peter Sommer Travel was an excellent small group tour. The two tour leaders (also archaeologists) were fun and incredible knowledgeable. The boat crew were skilled, pleasant and helpful at all times. The trips to the islands were well-organised with visits to extraordinary archaeological sites and to places off the beaten track.

Peter Sommer Travel have an excellent reputation for good reason. They specialise in small group tours and have highly knowledgeable, interesting, pleasant and professional staff. The tours are expensive but due to the quality of the experience I believe they represent good value for money.

We had a most enjoyable 2 week tour through the Peloponnese in May this year. The itinerary was well chosen, the commentary from the guides very erudite yet not overwhelming. The trip was well planned and executed, any wish was attended to and our female guide went out of her way to make the experience as pleasant as possible. A lot of attention was paid to give us a taste of the variety of regional Greek food and wine. We followed the two weeks with another two week sailing trip through the Cyclades, back to back. Once again the experience was repeated, so it is fair to say that Peter Sommer provides consistently good service. It might be worth mentioning that the Peloponnese was physically quite demanding, as per advice given, the Gulet holiday on the other hand very relaxing with lots of downtime. This was our first experience with group travel and we were positively surprised; both groups had most pleasant travelcompanions (easier than travelling with friends). Highly recommended.

Cruise along the Dalmatian Coast
