Our Wonderful Hiking Tour of the Amalfi Coast - with thanks to On Foot Holidays!

This was our first trip to Europe! My husband and I are quite active and like to explore the 'back-country' and culture of the various places we visit. We spent 3 weeks touring through Italy - starting in Venice, and spending time in the Cinque Terre and Rome. The information On Foot Holidays provided to us was excellent and helped guide us along the trails from town to town. The accommodations they booked for us were fantastic. Our bags would be transported for us while we were hiking and they were always waiting for us in our room at our next accommodation. The trip overall was so well organized and planned! We wouldn't hesitate to recommend On Foot Holidays to our friends and family, and we're already planning our next hiking tour with On Foot for next year!

Superb self-guided walking holiday in northern Portugal with On Foot Holidays.

The program was especially tailored for us by On Foot Holidays (OFH) so as to get the best dining options en route. It was a truly marvellous experience, right from the time the OFH driver picked us up in Porto to take us to the starting point, to the last night in a beautiful monastery that is now a pousada (luxury hotel). The walks were beautiful, the OFH hosts in each village were friendly and welcoming, the accommodation was clean and comfortable and the meals provided were very generous. This is a wonderful way to see the greenest, most beautiful and yet least known part of Portugal and to experience the traditional village life. It was our first walking holiday but it definitely won't be the last. It was a wonderful break from the rush and stress of the modern world, and a great way to immerse yourself in the wonders of nature.

Rating for tour operator:

I was very impressed with On Foot Holidays. They are very organised, they supply all the information you need well in advance: not just the practical stuff (paper maps, waterproof folders, digital maps, very detailed directions for your self-guided walk, emergency contact details, and outlines of what to expect of each day's route etc) but also interesting historical and cultural background information so that you have a good sense of the region before you arrive. Their on-gound staff in Portugal (the drivers, the hosts in each village) are helpful, multilingual, and very familiar with the OFH product. The main local contact and route designer Paul Burton kept in touch regularly both before the start and during the walk, sent us weather updates and alerts, and very kindly came to join us for breakfast one morning midway through the trip, which was great. Bascially, On Foot Holidays are very organised, very thorough and efficient, but a very personal one too - you don't feel like a number, you feel like you have a personal mentor, which is comforting if - as it was in our case - it happens to be your first walking/hiking holiday. In all sincerity I give On Foot Holidays10 out of 10.

Dry Wall Walk in Mallorca

We flew to Mallorca mid May 2019 and embarked on a one week hiking trip on the Camino de la Piedra Seca/ Dry Wall Walk. As our luggage was being transported from town to town by taxi, we hiked with light rucksacks containing only jumper and rain gear and some food and water for the day. The terrain is challenging in parts and we covered between 15 and 20-odd km per day, on some days with several hundred meters of altitude thrown in. Except for ...

The terrain is challenging in parts and we covered between 15 and 20-odd km per day, on some days with several hundred meters of altitude thrown in. Except for one day the weather was superb, at this time of year warm but not hot and the vistas were simply stunning! Only damper was an encounter of the involuntary kind with professional pickpockets! They really are a problem not only in the obvious tourist spots but even on the hiking paths according to the Guardia Civil.

Rating for tour operator:

We were a group of 6 from Germany. Up front communication with the OnFoot team was speedy, comprehensive and always with a touch of humor! Mallorca as a destination is a great place to walk/hike, the organisation, planning and documentation by the OnFoot Holidays team was meticulous. The hotel operators they had chosen were super friendly and welcoming and each hotel had its own unique flair. A great thank you to the team in UK! (too bad your leaving us...or maybe not??)

Simply Brilliant in all Respects

The weather was great, the scenery was fabulous, and the walks themselves were wonderful. The logistics were simply impeccable...everything worked exactly as it was supposed to. Our local contact was helpful and responsive. Taxis turned up on time to pick us up and deliver us back to the airport upon arrival and departure, and also on those days when we wanted to shorten the walk by a bit. The hotels varied in style...some were simpler than others...but all were great. The walking directions (extremely detailed), the maps (the envy of other walkers we encountered), and the GPS app (we used this to find ourselves a couple of times when we strayed off the path) were all very accurate and very helpful. A beautiful holiday, brilliantly planned and executed.

Rating for tour operator:

On Foot Holidays was simply brilliant from start to finish. They were helpful and responsive at all times, and everything worked exactly as it was supposed to. No detail was overlooked, and everything was done perfectly. 5 stars.

Tuscany - picture perfect

Although initially hindered by unseasonal consistent rain (somethings you just can’t plan), we certainly made up for it walking across postcard perfect countryside on the way to the hill top towns. Places we had never thought of going provided us with beautiful places to stay and take in the atmosphere before launching into the countryside again.

Our operator, responded quickly, worked with us to modify our trip providing advice but never taking over. They did exactly what they said they would. Organisation of accomodation, walking notes and maps, and logistic management of luggage was also done to efficiently and to plan. Engagement with our operator was friendly and easy, I think this flowed on to the various parties along the way who provided services.

We explored the Amalfi Coast on foot, with our hotels and luggage transfers arranged by the tour operator. We followed the paths provided by the tour but were on our own to explore.

We can't speak highly enough about our email interaction with the On Foot Holidays staff. All of our queries were answered very cordially and within a remarkably short time (often within hours). It was clear that everyone we worked with would go to any length to make this trip meet our individual needs. The printed materials describing the trip arrived in our mailbox in a timely fashion and were extremely detailed, with high quality maps, route notes and background information. We have worked with three other tour operators on similar outdoor adventure trips, and On Foot Holidays was clearly the best among these.

Our accommodations were interesting and comfortable, meals delicious after a long day of walking, and support staff available at any time for questions/weather reports/check-ins. We had never done a walking tour before and found the self-guided navigation challenging and fun. GPS was essential to ensure we kept on track, but the written instructions were very good and literally our moment to moment guide on the route. The scenery was memorable, even on our one rainy day, and the peaceful serenity was rejuvenating.

Rating for tour operator:

On Foot Holiday staff was very responsive to every question we had and provided materials for us as soon as possible before our trip. Though we did not meet our contact person, Aznar, he was always available to us and we still keep in touch about different aspects of our adventure. Everything went completely smoothly from taxi pickups to luggage transfers to accommodations and meals.

Our luggage was carried to that nights accommodation so we were only required to take a small day pack with our provided lunch etc. The walking had us walking through some farmland,, cork forests and very isolated valleys and limestones mountains. Our accommodation in each of the villages was always good with welcoming friendly hosts. One in particular stands out and that was La Mejorana in Grazalema. Our host here was excellent. The walking days were always interesting,, usually very isolated. The notes On Foot provide give information on the history of the area plus interesting facts on flora and fauna. This year we had a couple of wet days, this is something that you just have to accept when doing a walking holiday. On the warm sunny days the walking was wonderful. We loved the experience of arriving at our white village destination with the beautiful plazas, narrow cobbled streets and little cafes, bars. We would always end our walking day enjoying a beer or a local wine. Just wonderful.

This was the 4th holiday using On Foit Holidays. I find them an excellent company to deal with. Any correspondence is answered immediately, they offer excellent advice and their attention to detail with the walking notes cannot be faulted. Their website showing all their different walks is also very professional, easy to use with good information and provides the pricing It was the quality of their website that drew me to use them on my first walk 4 years ago. Each walk has different options depending on the time you have available. When on the walk itself there is usually an option for reducing the total amount of walking if that's needed. This year we also took the option of downloading a GPS app which helped in times when we were a little unsure of which direction we should be going.. This was very helpful in the rain. I will be using On Foot again on our next walking holiday.
