What's the flower of the day?

It was a Naturetrek trip to 3 areas in Bulgaria, mainly looking at wild flowers and incidentally at insects, bird and animal life. Despite less than ideal weather it was a wonderful trip, with a friendly and interesting group of people, led by a very helpful Bulgarian guide who made sure we made the most of every day of the holiday.

Naturetrek as its name implies, specialises in nature-focussed and nature-friendly holidays. Despite a tricky post-Covid period of some change and uncertainty in arranging flights they were very helpful. They use small local accommodation and provide a very good service.

It was organised very effectively giving us four days of birding and led by a very competent and professional guide who lived locally. We stayed in an lovely converted farmhouse with large rooms, extensive grounds with farm animals, a swimming pool and very friendly staff. Breakfast and dinner were excellent, included local produce and were accompanied by a choice of local wines. The locations chosen on the trip were ideal without too much travelling in hot conditions to sites that provided good views of a variety of species. A mid-day picnic lunch comprising a variety of cold food and drinks was prepared daily.

Rating for tour operator:

Naturetrek were meticulous in providing pre-departure details and ensuring that you were well prepared for the trip. The flights were at the right times and included the right baggage allowances. The transport provided during the trip was just right, seating six guests in comfort with easy access during frequent stops. The guide was excellent; by living locally he knew exactly where to go and was very good at ensuring everyone got to see everything that was found.

Wonderful wildlife and flowers

We visited various sites to see rare plants including numerous orchid species, which were the main target of the weekend . We also saw an exciting variety of moths in the Saturday morning moth trap. we also had sightings of birds, butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies. The hotel was very comfortable with very helpful staff.

Excellently organised. Our guide was an excellent botanist and tutor. He knew the area very well and tailored our tour to suit the prevailing weather conditions. He was also sociable , amusing, and thoughtful of us.

All the boxes ticked

Ours was primarily a botany focussed holiday with birds and butterflies added in. We enjoyed the excellent organisational skills of the tour leader and co leader. Their knowledge of all Florian and fauna was incredible. The family owned and managed hotel was superb with a Michelin Star chef part of the family! Guided wildlife tour of North and South Uist, Outer Hebrides

North and South Uist were delightful. Our small group had an excellent guide and saw several rare bird and mammal species which were new to us. The hotel accommodation was very comfortable and the staff were friendly. As a vegetarian I was disappointed with the quality of food offered to me, compared with that offered to the meat and fish-eaters, and registered this complaint with Naturetrek. Otherwise the holiday was excellent.

Roaming in Romania

A nature-focused tour with a small group. Lead by an experienced Naturetrek guide and an excellent local naturalist. Emphasis was on birds, but other aspects of Romanian wildlife and history were covered, visiting the Carpathians, Danube Delta and Black Sea coastal regions.

Rating for tour operator:

The organisation was of a high standard throughout. We received detailed information and reviews and accounts of previous trips to this area soon after enquiring and even more detail after booking. The veracity of that information was impressive and we were pleased to have had such good preparation. When travelling to see wildlife we would expect surprises, adventure and some personal effort; there was plenty of such experience. As already mentioned, they employed guides and local facilities and personnel of the highest order.
