Time of my life!

From beginning to end this was the trip of a lifetime and I literally had the time of my life. Hitherto, I’d never been to South America, nor indeed the Southern Hemisphere, and so the sights, sounds, wildlife and history of Buenos Aires, Tierra del Fuego, Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica were breathtakingly wonderful. Hitherto, I’d never been to South America, nor indeed the Southern Hemisphere, and so the sights, sounds, wildlife and history of Buenos Aires, Tierra del Fuego, Falkland Islands, South Georgia and Antarctica were breathtakingly wonderful. Amongst a wealth of wildlife, I saw eight types of penguin, six species of albatross, a plethora of cetaceans and seals, and all at close quarters in brilliant scenery and company. We also saw the beach on Elephant Island from where Sir Ernest Shackleton set off on his perilous journey to South Georgia to seek rescue for his crew.

Naturetrek are an impressive operator, providing excellent information and support before and during the holiday, and superb feedback afterwards. The tour guides were extremely friendly, helpful and attentive to the the needs, requests and enquiries of participants. Their knowledge and expertise was incredible, across a whole range of taxa, whilst their enthusiastic delivery was perfectly pitched to, and appreciated alike by, people with a wide range of wildlife experience, from enthusiastic newcomers to fellow experts.

However - Cuba needs all the support that it can get as the current situation of economic sanctions and Covid have taken their toll. Our twelve day tour of Cuba was incredibly varied and precision planned, with an outstanding tour leader - Byron Palacios: 2 nights Villa Soroa - visiting Sierra de las Portales and Che Guevara's cave, Hacienda Cortina and parkland, Las Terrazas; 3 nights Playa Giron - visiting Zapata Biosphere Reserve and surrounding area (savannah, woodland and marsh - walks and birding); 1 night Camaguey - visited Che Guevara's mausoleum enroute 3 nights Cayo Coco - visiting Najasa NP; Sierra de Chorillos; Cuban cigar presentation enroute. Birding outings to Cayo Guillermo, Cayo Paredon, Cueva del Jabali ... 1 night La Habana: fabulous guided walking tour of this amazing city, with a drink and magical music in El Floridita (Ernest Hemmingway's favourite bar) and a tasty traditional Cuban lunch at 'Dona Eutimia', followed by a visit to 'Plaza de la Revolucion'.

Rating for tour operator:

Naturetrek - we have travelled with this outstanding wildlife company many times to places including: Central Spain; Central India; Kazakhstan; Georgia; Cuba, and will continue to do so in the future. We are usually independent travellers, however if we want to see wildlife in a more 'remote/off the beaten-track' country we always travel with Naturetrek. Naturetrek takes the stress and hard work out of a holiday: Their itineraries are extremely detailed; pre-departure information is very thorough; office staff are very helpful; tour leaders are knowledgeable in many fields; local guides are well organised and knowledgeable; accommodation is usually characterful and in good locations; transport throughout is usually seamless; cost is comparable with other wildlife companies ..... What more can I say.

Amazing birds of Taiwan

Led by a highly skilled and dedicated guide, we visited a number of coastal and forested mountain locations in search of wintering and endemic birds. We saw most of the latter, were well-looked after by our knowledgeable guide, and had some very tasty Taiwanese cuisine. The Taiwanese people were very friendly and welcoming, and seemed to appreciate us visiting their beautiful country.

It is quite a journey to get there but once we boarded the boat we had a wonderful experience. The snorkelling was beyond our expectations with the variety of marine life and corals, and we saw so much in the three hours a day we snorkelled nearly every day. On top of that, sighting many types of dolphins and whales, spotting sea birds and birds of paradise, there was rarely a full moment. The crew of The Mermaid warrant particular mention - their helpfulness in every area of the holiday made everything run so smoothly and enjoyably.

Whales, whales and more whales

A stunning boat trip to the marine reserve in the sea of Cortez. Everyday had more exciting sights and experiences, from swimming with whale sharks and sea lions, to watching shearwaters and storm petrels skim the waves. One of the highlights was stroking a grey whale that came up to our small boat, another was moving through a super pod of more than a thousand dolphins all leaping and playing.
