Breathtaking Blue Whales and Dazzling Dolphins

A well organised trip where only the weather and high waves impeded our views of cetaceans. Pico is a fascinating island both scenically and geologically. We caught up with 'ordinary' birds transformed by their island isolation like the beautiful Blue Chaffinch. But brief views of Fin and Sperm Whales earlier in the week were eclipsed by a dazzling day of Loggerhead Turtles, Common, Bottlenose and sparring Risso's Dolphins with an afternoon gazing in awe at the incredible length of not one, but two Blue Whales. Luck plays a part of course, but Naturetrek and the expertise of CW Azores enabled views that would be hard to beat anywhere in the world. Memorable - another tick on anyone's wildlife 'bucket list.' But much more than that - a real insight into a cetaceans world about which we still know comparatively little

We were rewarded by wall to wall sunshine which made our expeditions and picnic lunches that much more enjoyable. One particularly memorable event was traversing the Imbros Gorge. With such a rich history it was only right that our leaders included visits to some of the most interesting archeological sites, also to get a flavour of the Greek culture our evening meals took in a wide variety of local dishes.

I have been on a number of Naturetrek Holidays and have always found them to be enjoyable and well organized. The brochures are informative and the administration staff are pleasant and helpful. I have been with a number of different guides and found them all to have been very knowledgeable, very patient, putting up with repeated questions and, where the holiday has required the guide to be a driver, I have felt safe in their care.

One does have to be really quite interested in plants and birds at is was full on from morning to dusk.I was interested to note that of all the men on the trip had started with an interest in nAtural history ,like me when at primary school and that interestd had just deppened over the years. The Greek food was extremley good and when I went behind to the kitchen to find the cook who had made the rabbit stew and discussed the recipe with a lovely greek momMa she beamed when I said that I used the same ingredients as her but mine didn`t taste any way as good has hers.I had made friend for life. My wife had been concerned about the walking and teraine we had to go over but she did the Ibrose gorge very well and the bowl of cold Greek yoghurt and honey at the end replenished the calories spent on the walk. Our cpmanions on the holiday were all so very pleasant and interesting. My wife over one of the meals together reailse that sitting opposite her was an expupil from the school she had taught in 40 odd years before! Would we go again?, yes definitely... we are lookng at the alpine flowers for next year

Bears, boar, birds and botanising

Up in the Abruzzo National Park, two hours east of Rome and part of the Apennine chain, and guided by real expert naturalists, we were out to see the many species of orchid and birds which are rare or non-existent at home. Sightings of the Marzican bears endemic to the region were a real bonus. The local wolves eluded us, though scat and deer bones showed where they had been

A great variety of wildlife, served up by great guides, accompanied by good food and friendly company

It was only a week, but we managed to visit so many different sites with a variety of habitats and wildlife. We watched great spotted cuckoos, admired dozens of orchids, were fascinated by the tiny nests of paper wasps, found lovely fritillaries and swallowtails, listened to the hooting of an eagle owl as the light faded and the glowworms appeared, were amazed as harriers, kites and other raptors flew over our heads on their return journey ...

And then there were the mediaeval Cathar castles and villages, the etangs, the mountains and gorges, the picnic lunches...
