South America's 'Big Five'! by Val, 2 Aug 2016
Holiday Rating:

Brazil's brilliant wildlife

This trip, to see Brazil's 'Big 5', greatly exceeded my expectations, providing wonderful views of the 5 species that we were hoping for and much, much more. The Big 5 were Giant River Otter, Maned Wolf, Jaguar, Tapir, Giant anteater. We saw all of these, along with nut-cracking monkeys, raucous macaws, caiman by the bucketload and an ocelot(!) The abundance and variety of birdlife was amazing and our guides were very knowledgeable and helpful...

Travelling as a small group in 2 minibuses with a UK based leader who was very knowledgeable on all aspects of natural history, supported by an Italian who was equally enthusiastic. Our comfortable family run hotel with excellent food, for the week is located in a mountain hamlet in the meadows, so that a short stroll could find much of interest after a good day out exploring a good range of habitats further afield in search of butterflies etc

Full of pleasant surprises

A second Spring for us as we travelled to Sweden after our Spring was almost over. So we had all the flowers and birdsong that we don't usually get to hear in Britain. The people were very hospitable and the food delightful.

Spitsbergen Realm of the Polar Bear trip

After boarding the ice-breaking ship Ortelius at Longyearbyen in Spitsbergen, we had daily doses of snow-capped mountains and glaciers, many up close and personal, even being allowed to touch one of the Hornsund area icebergs! After boarding the ice-breaking ship Ortelius at Longyearbyen in Spitsbergen, we had daily doses of snow-capped mountains and glaciers, many up close and personal, even being allowed to touch one of the Hornsund area icebergs! One of the zodiac leisure landings was dedicated to the exploration of the many delicate tundra wildflowers. This educational exercise caused me to find more species later on my own. A slow walk on the Polar Desert revealed small arctic insect life, as well as an education about the multitude of mosses and lichens in this area. Of course the bird cliffs were overwhelming with the teaming avian colonies; we seemed like ants in the zodiacs slowing gliding below the towering rocky mountain sides. We viewed 8 Polar Bears, a number greater than I had imagined. But even more exciting were the 2 bears (each on different days) that suddenly appeared as dots in the distant surrounding pack ice, then gradually becoming larger as they slowly strolled right up to our anchored ship, circled around the vessel for half an hour, then continued on their way into the whiteness to resume their roaming life of solitude. This experience truly gave me a sense of the isolationist existence of these magnificent creatures. We also were able to enjoy a small herd of Walruses lazing on an isolated beach. Although this critter was my most wanted animal on the trip, even more satisfying was our 2-hour time spent on a bluff overlooking the Walruses, immersed in a landscape of water, snow-capped mountains, brilliantly blue skies, quiet, later topped with a small pod of Belugas gliding by! Except for the last 2 days, the weather was perfect! Thanks to Naturetrek's professional guidance, and of course all the scenery and wildlife, we came home with a lifetime of memories.

Rating for tour operator:

We registered this trip with Naturetrek. In spite of being the only clients this year on their Spitsbergen trip, they gladly made all their usual arrangements with us for the trip. Their arrangements went smoothly with the above great results. Also because of their personal advice and procedural guidance, we were able to easily engage the Oceanwide Expedition leaders in helping us experience all that was offered. We were very pleased and impressed with Naturetrek, and would definitely go with them on a future trip of our choice.

Our Gol Plateau holiday was our seventh with Naturetrek. Our third experience with leader Jessica was absolutely delightful, the group was a pleasure to meet and the itinerary was well paced with a rest day from walking in the middle to travel on the Fram railway and Sogne Fjord. Had not expected to enjoy th4 best food I've ever had in 50 years of travel to Europe, but the Golsfjellet Hotell had a superb breakfast smorgasbord and perfect evening ...

Even the weather was very good considering the latitude and altitude, and the flowers were wonderful! Once again, well done Naturetrek!

Rating for tour operator:

The tour operator is always very prompt in handling inquiries and bookings and most considerate about the fact we join them from Australia and often meet them in the destination country, rather than traveling from the UK with the group. We choose them because there is nothing equivalent in Australia!

We had an excellent butterfly leader - not only good at identifying the butterflies but also good at explaining why that was what they were. We also had an Armenian guide who was expert on a variety of natural history especially birds and was also very informative about the country. Our accommodation was very good and we went to a different type of restaurant each evening giving us a different cuisine each time - all local produce.
