Great trip full of dragonflies and other wildlife

We spent a week hunting dragons on Sardinia, and we found some lovely damselflies and dragonflies that we don't normally see in mainland Europe. The scenery was beautiful, our guide was very knowledgeable and made sure we made the most of each site, the hotels were lovely and the food delicious.

Naturetrek continue to delight with my latest trip to Sardinia, focused on dragonflies but with plenty of time to take in all the wildlife on offer.

A real variety of plants, butterflies and birds in a stunning location.

We traveled to Loudes and from there to Gedre. Each day we travelled short distances to various parts of the Pyrenees.

Lovely scenery, knowledgable & helpful guides, good friendly group

We had 2 guides, both knowledgable, well informed & able to communicate well. There was a flexible approach to fit in with people's interests (mostly birds & plants) and the weather and their was a sense of companionship & learning from each other. The group was friendly and individuals were able to adapt to each other with a sense of humour. A very enjoyable experience.

Our hosts were well organised and tended to our every need; the guides were superbly knowledgeable and enabled us to see a splendid array of birds and baboons both on foot and by canoe. We have lovely memories of being paddled serenely along the river in the early mornings and evenings. We were also taken out from the base to visit very interesting places in the vicinity such as the beach where fish are landed in vast numbers every day. In between, we had a lovely pool and base in which to relax in or out of the sun! This trip is to be thoroughly recommended to anyone interested in birds.

A Walk in the flowers

An Alpine Garden Society local group from Dorset and Hampshire, spent a wonderful week in The Dolomites, organised by Naturetrek. A week of walking and looking at various habitats, all well known to our excellent leaders, and finding a wonderful array of high alpines, orchids and flower filled hay meadows. Our hotel was family run, very welcoming and served us the most tasty food each night.

On arrival in Iceland we flew from Reykjavik to Akureyri in the North, then travelled on to Lake Myvatn to our first hotel. We visited Godafoss, one of the glorious waterfalls Iceland has to offer. The following day we went whale watching from Husavik. We saw several humpback whales feeding in pairs, a brilliant start to the holiday. We spent two days birdwatching (the main activity for the tour) around the lake. Several new species for me (a bit of a novice), but in the company of some very experienced and friendly birders, I learned a lot. We also visited Grjotagja, a site in a lava field with large fissures and underground pools. The hotel was facing some rootless cones (also known as false or pseudo craters). On the last ady at Myvatn, we visited Dettifoss, the waterfall with the largest drop in Iceland and Sellfoss, a smaller falls nearby. From Myvatn. we drove westwards Stykkisholmur on the southern shore of Breidafjordur. The following day we took a ferry out to Flatey, a beautiful small island in the middle of the bay. There we spent the morning birdwatching and looking around the island. In a small building behind the church, a couple of us found a facsimile of the Book Of Flatey containing the text of old sagas. The next day was spent looking around the peninsular including a colony of Guilemots with some razor bills. We also saw some seals. The next day we set off south towards the Golden Circle and Thingvatlir, which we visited on the way south. The next hotel was near Gullfoss, a glorious waterfall I had visited before. The following day we visited the falls and then onto Gysir to see the gysers. We also visited a large explosion crater (although it is though now to be a different type of crater) where we were lucky enough to see a Gyr Falcon, the bird we all wanted to see. On our last day, we set off early so that on the way to Keflavik and our palnes, we could look for a site I had visited on my previous trip. It is an incredible bit of coastline, but it is also where there is a large statue of a Great Auk, something the birders were keen to see. The statue looks out to sea facing facing the island where the last surviving Great Auk was captured and killed. From there we drove to Keflavik to catch our flights home. As there were 24 hours of daylight, we were able to go out for walks every evening and get to know the area around the hotels, which was always of interest.

Rating for tour operator:

The trip was organised well with enough flexibility that we could alter the plans for the day to suit our interests without missing the sites and sights included in the itinerary. The guide was very friendly and approachable as well as informative. The flights and transfers were well planned.

Rating for tour operator:

Just about everything concerning Naturetrek's role in the tour was excellent: from the website and initial information, through the booking and the pre-tour briefing, to the travel arrangements and the tour itself. Our highly knowledgable tour leader played a key role in the transport and accommodation arrangements as well as in the scientific content of the tour, thereby helping to facilitate fine social bonding between all the participants.

Excellent balance of bird watching and relaxing

Ideal trip for a novice bird watcher like me or for those with more experience who don't wish to spend all day in the field. Very expertly guided and an opportunity to soak up the atmosphere of Spain away from the usual tourist spots.

Extremely courteous, informative and prompt to all enquiries and changes to the planned tour

We were originally planning to take a Naturetrek Tour to Kazakhstan, but an opportunity to change this to a visit to Panama to see a Harpy Eagle at its nest was very tempting for a possible change. Naturetrek employees were uniformly helpful in making this change. The tour itself was a great experience. The guide was an elite birder who took a great deal of trouble to ensure that everyone saw all the birds and understood key points of interest...
