We had a very enjoyable short break on the Somerset Levels 7-8th Feb'19. Our guides Matt and Chris were first class bird guides, and their knowledge of the area was excellent.

We stayed at the Swan Hotel in Wells, which was very convenient for the Levels. The food was very good, and the staff were charming. Our 2 days were spent in different areas of the Levels, each quite different to the other. The weather was considerably better than the forecast, only 2 showers when we were luckily in the excellent hides, of which there are plenty. The local pubs we ate in served very good food. Matt Collis and Chris Griffin were both excellent guides, very friendly and helpful to novice birders. Their local knowledge of the area was first class, and they managed to get us to the exact spot where the starlings were going to roost. the best murmuration they had seen in years. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip, and recommend it to all levels of bird watchers. M.B. from Essex

Belize a surprising Gem

Wonderful birding tour of the country with a small party of seven and our guide. We first visited Birds Eye Lodge at Crooked tree sanctuary. We the moved on to Lamanai Outpost. situated on a large lake with 3 different habitats and Mayan ruins nearby. The Air-boat ride to the wetlands was exhilarating and the walk through the pine forest interesting. Many new species were spotted during our stay and the local Howler Monkeys offered a night and dawn chorus to complete with the bird life. The next stop was Black Rock resort, located on a steep hill side adjacent to a fast flowing river. Another birders paradise with over 60 species recorded during our stay. Our tour continued to our next destination Jungle Lodge at Tikal in Guatemala. Not only were the Mayan ruins extraordinary the bird life was superb. We then travelled back to Belize to Dandrega for a night stay at the coast after a long days travel. The next day we took a boat to South Water Quay, our island paradise for the next 5 nights. Not only was there snorkelling off the beach, we were able to take 3 option trips to snorkel over local reefs seeing a large number of fish and coral. The resort was laid back and we walked around all the time in bare feet, the staff were extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble. It was a great way to end a holiday.

As musch research as tourism, this was genuinely a trip of a lifetime

We spent three weeks on an Icebreaker research ship in Antarctica with PhD level researchers, guides and crew. We landed almost daily but at sea was as informative as being ashore. We saw over 150 bird's and every hind of Whale including an Orca attack. This was so much more than a cruise, it was a genuine adventure.

Great birding in Belize (& other things too)

we had 2 weeks exploring coast & interior of Belize ,also crossing over into Guatemala to visit the Mayan site of Tikal. Our leader Peter had 30 years' experience birding on his own as well as leading groups, starting when he was a child. He took us to an additional Mayan site which we really appreciated since the tour only had 2 sites on the itinerary. Our leader Peter had 30 years' experience birding on his own as well as leading groups, starting when he was a child. He took us to an additional Mayan site which we really appreciated since the tour only had 2 sites on the itinerary. We stayed in 2 fairly remote but well-equipped eco-lodges (well, one was an eco-lodge at least!) and 2 coastal resorts, providing a nice contrast. We saw manatees & some went snorkelling but we were off birding whenever possible. Belize is a fascinating mix of cultures & all the people we met were very welcoming. At 2 of the resorts we felt they "tried too hard" with the food, but fresh fish usually proved a good choice, and the fruit and fruit juices were always excellent. If in doubt, beans and rice were always satisfying.

We hadn't used Naturertrek before. They caught a vital mistake on my visa/passport application & sent everything promptly and on time. A last-minute change to the itinerary couldn't be helped & they informed us of course, but a revised itinerary couldn't be prepared in time. That was our only disappointment.

Wild winter experiences in Japan

Naturetrek`s new holiday "Wild Japan in Winter" lived up to expectations. Hokkaido is a magical place in February- very cold and snowy, which added to the experience. Naturetrek`s new holiday "Wild Japan in Winter" lived up to expectations. Hokkaido is a magical place in February- very cold and snowy, which added to the experience. Our excellent leader Duncan and helpful Japanese guide took us to see beautiful, elegant red crowned cranes, noisily displaying, as they waited to be fed. This species nearly disappeared, but local Japanese people sustained them over winter by putting out feed. Their population is now thriving. To see one white tailed eagle or one Steller`s sea eagle is a magical moment, but to see many of them swooping down to pick up fish, thrown out by the boat was magical. Before docking, the boat then came alongside a pier, which meant you were at eye level with these majestic fish eagles as the snow sprinkled around them. I could go on and on, but one more special encounter was with the Japanese Macaque- "snow monkeys" near Nagano. Although the hot springs are visited by thousands of tourists, one can still be captivated by these intelligent animals luxuriating in the warm, steaming springs or meticulously grooming each other. Naturetrek gave an accurate description of what to expect, and it ddelivered.

Naturetrek, from England, were excellent at organising our booking, keeping us up-to-date and providing all we needed for travel. Their tour leaders were all excellent - friendly, knowledgeable and always pleased to share their expertise. Oceanwide, who were responsible for the ship cruise, were also excellent in every respect, from the helpful ship staff who made us comfortable to the expedition guides who gave excellent lectures on a wide range of subjects (see above) and enabled us to make the most of all shore landings and zodiac cruises, whilst, at the same time, making us aware of the responsibilities that come with the privilege of travelling to such places.

A Mexican Experience

We saw the phenomenon of the Monarch butterflies. Our first sightings of breaching Humpbacks, & heard them singing through microphones. Released Olive Ridgeback Turtle hatchlings into the sea. Viewed lots of birds & other butterflies in forests, & in the Mangroves. Also visited the archeological ruins at Teotihuacan.
