A driving tour from SE England centered on Scotland and Skye specifically. Involved stops in Yorks. Dales and Northumberland. Total driving 2400 mrls.

An excellent itinerary selected by MacKinlay Kidd based on a loose route description by us. McK K interpreted our brief of quirky comfortable accommodation with good food. They provided touring / sight seeing recommendations which were clearly based on experience..

Wonderful Scotland and Ireland Vacation!

Our family and I had a great vacation in Scotland and Ireland! We visited Scotland first, starting in Edinburgh, then drove the rental car to Inverness, then to the Isle of Skye. There were so many great experiences! Some highlights were the National Museum of Scotland, Stirling Castle, Doune Castle, the Famous Grouse whiskey experience, the Highland Games in Inverness. In Skye we enjoyed the beautiful scenery and light, and our children enjoyed hiking part of the Quiraing. We flew to Dublin and enjoyed Trinity College Book of Kells and library, St. Patrick's Cathedral and the Treasures section of the National Museum of Ireland. Our adult children liked the pubs! The Guiness tour was fun, what a view at the top! Some other highlights in Ireland were the Giant's Causeway, Blarney Castle, the Rock of Cashel, Hayfield Manor in Cork, Casey's of Baltimore seafood dinner, Skibbereen Heritage Center, Killarney National Park, food and music at Murphy's Pub in Killarney, food and music at the Old Ground Hotel in Ennis, the Cliffs of Moher. We plan to go back again in the future and explore some more!

McKinlay Kidd arranged a great vacation for our family to Scotland and Ireland! The location, quality and service of the places we stayed were excellent! Airport transfers, rental car, and flight from Glasgow to Dublin all went smoothly. The travel documentation was very helpful and included a detailed itinerary and tips for each city. I would highly recommend McKinlay Kidd to anyone planning a trip to Scotland or Ireland!

Fascinating and beautiful islands

We spent five nights on Orkney and five on Shetland on a self-drive holiday. The arrangements were smooth and efficient and the recommendations for places to visit were excellent and just what we had hoped for. We stayed in hotels and one B&B all of which exceeded our expectations. The weather in Orkney was not kind (cold, wet and windy) but in Shetland was astonishing - warm and sunny (and of course daylight for almost 24 hours) - we were told ...

We stayed in hotels and one B&B all of which exceeded our expectations. The weather in Orkney was not kind (cold, wet and windy) but in Shetland was astonishing - warm and sunny (and of course daylight for almost 24 hours) - we were told it isn't always warm and sunny however! The islands are beautiful and have fascinating neolithic and Viking history as well as more modern history (e.g the vital role played by both in the Second World War. We are keen to go back and would certainly use McKinlau Kidd again. Friendly and helpful and nothing seemed too much trouble.

We made all arrangements by email and phone - they were friendly and listened to what we wanted and then made it happen. We couldn't ask for more!

With just a few ideas from me, Robert created an itinerary that truly made this a trip of a lifetime. The boutique hotels were lovely, and all of the details were handled for us. All we had to do was collect our travel information and rail tickets from our first hotel.

Heaven in the Northern Isles!

We took a fly-drive holiday organised by McKinley Kidd to Orkney and Shetland. All aspects were faultlessly organised, both our hotels were excellent and we had a lot of fun visiting many points of interest in both locations. High spots? Our boat trip on Scapa Flow courtesy of Dawn Star, and our trip to to Unst where we got within sight of Muckle Flugga. But there was so much more, assisted by reasonable weather in Orkney and sunshine in Shetland...

An Outstanding Scotland Holiday

We spent 8 days traveling by rail from Edinburgh to Pitlochry to Inverness to Isle of Skye to Spean Bridge to Glasgow. It was out first time to Scotland and this was a great introduction to the people, landscape, and culture. Our lodging and transportation needs were expertly arranged and, for the most part, went flawlessly (e.g., that British Airways lost my bag inbound and it took 4 days to catch-up with us was no fault of McKinley-Kidd). ...

Our lodging and transportation needs were expertly arranged and, for the most part, went flawlessly (e.g., that British Airways lost my bag inbound and it took 4 days to catch-up with us was no fault of McKinley-Kidd). It tended to rain while we were on the train and largely pleasant when not and we took a pair of excursions -- one arranged by the company -- when we had layovers in Inverness and Portree.

Rating for tour operator:

McKinlay-Kidd is a classy operation! All of our pre-trip needs were handled in a timely fashion, their Vamoos app was quite handy while in-country, and they were responsive to our post-holiday suggestions. We would recommend them to anyone who wanted an introduction to Scotland!

Started from Ullapool. A very interesting and educational holiday to the outlying North West British Isles. Despite the varying weather, we thoroughly enjoyed this first time tour. We specifically wanted to visit St. Kilda, and achieved our aim on the second available day, with the included and recommended boat operator, Sea Harris, who were thoroughly professional, and took good care to make this memorable.. we visited several ancient sites and pure white Sandy beaches. There is much to see for the adventurous. We finished in Oban. We extended their original tour "Escape to the Edge" to 7 days, to include the Southern islands (Uist and Barra); and then booked ourselves on from Oban to Colonsay and Crimean, including Loch Melfort, Arduane Gardens, and Kilmartin Valley. As a follow up, we read Peter May's novels, set on Lewis. In summary, excellent holiday and value for the cost.

Rating for tour operator:

The McKinlay Kidd drive yourself holidays are innovative and well prepared, with good hotel accommodation, ferry booking, and briefing notes. This was our second; the first, two years ago, was to Orkneys and Shetlands.. As an alternative to printed documents, they introduced us to the Vamoos app. This enables tourists to carry documents on a pad or smarts phone. We recommended some further development to improve the live, updated weather forecast section; and the map section, which MK will be looking into. They are very responsive to questions, and clearly take great care to make their holiday packages work well.

Very well organised, excellent suggestions re itinerary and places of interest.Great selection of maps and local guides.

2 excellent weeks exploring Ireland from Kinsale then out to the coast and (largely) following the Wild Atlantic Way round to Westprt.4 two night stops and 2 three night stops which gave a good balance between driving and having time to explore. Over 30 years since we were last there and it was good to return. We have never travelled with McKinlay Kidd before but I would have no hesitation in using them again.

The accommodation was very good and the food was excellent in all the places we stayed as well as the recommendations of where to eat on both islands. The ideas of what to do on Orkney and Shetland matched up with the information we had already researched and gave us very interesting places to visit and the organised tour of Westray was very enjoyable. But the highlight of the holiday organised by Mckinlay Kidd was the boat tour from Lerwick - seeing the colony of gannets and guillemots as well as puffins, great skuas and other sea birds was just amazing.

Rating for tour operator:

Hamish and Robert both provided very good service and all the administration was very efficient. All hotels were expecting us and my gluten free requirements very well catered for. Car hire was very easy and all connecting flights worked very well.
