Classic Round Scotland by Train by Recycled Teenager, 6 Jun 2019

An amazing classic tour of Scotland, where all the arrangements went smoothly.

We went on a classic tour of Scotland, organised by McKinlay Kidd, which was from Glasgow to Spean Bridge, then over to Skye and on to Inverness, Pitlochry and Edinburgh. We travelled by train, except for cars and a ferry crossing and journeyed for over 800 miles and stayed in six hotels, all organised from start to finish by McKinlay Kidd. All the arrangements went without any problems, the hotels we stayed in were all of high standards and the places we saw were very interesting. We had time between getting trains to make our own arrangements for looking around the various places we stayed in, which was also very good. It was a very scenic tour and the views from the trains were amazing. When we arrived at any station, a driver in a very nice car, was always there to meet us. The car always returned well before time when we had to get the next train. We were delighted with all the arrangements and have nothing but praise for the tour.

Rating for tour operator:

The advisor I spoke to tweaked the arrangements to accommodate the chronic back pain which I suffer from, as I needed to have comfortable accommodation. We were sent all the details and how to get the tickets in plenty of time before we set out and all the hotels, trains, cars and ferry journeys were booked ahead of time. As we do not know Scotland at all, this was ideal and would have taken ages if we had to book train tickets ourselves.

They kept me informed at all times. They were exceptionally good to arrange other accommodation when one of the original overnight stays had overbooked.

The Scottish Highlands by Train

If you want to get a taste of the Highlands with some self paced touring without the worry, this is the way to go! The app was very helpful with telling us exactly what we needed to know and when.

Rating for tour operator:

Chris at McKinlay (and others who helped) were professional, helpful, friendly and answered our questions in a timely manner. This whole experience was relatively worry-free for us as the details were taken care of... our train tickets were ready for us, each B&B was aware of our coming there, taxis meeting us at our train, etc. I'll definitely look to McKinlay Kidd when we plan our next trip to that area and am telling all our friends!

Scottish island hopping

It was special from start to finish with even the Scottish weather being very kind to us. Met lots of friendly people, each island was very different. Also saw so much wildlife.

The accommodation booked was superb, it was wonderful to have all the ferries booked for us so all we had to do was turn up at the port. Also very much appreciated the suggestions for each island

A very well organised and thoughfully planned holiday that provided a stress free relaxed esxperience

We took a train tour of Scotland, with tickets, connections, accommodation and several day trips all included by McKinley Kidd.. It provided us with the advantages of touring individually without the stress of sorting out accommodation and planning the best places to visit.

I spent 7 wonderful days and 6 nights on Shetland. I went expecting the worst of weather and was pleasantly surprised at how good the weather was for the duration of my holiday. I did a mixture of visiting historical sites, walking and seeing lots of wildlife - and taking loads of photographs! My accommodation was excellent and the food was terrific. The locals were very friendly, helpful and informative. My only disappointment was missing out on the Fair Isle element and this was due to operational issues at Tingwall Aiport which were unavoidable. I hope that I will have another opportunity to visit Fair Isle. To offset this disappointment, I had an extra two days in Brae at the Busta House Hotel - a great place to stay, It also meant that I had more opportunities to visit more of Mainland Shetland. The Scalloway Hotel in Scalloway was in an excellent location looking over the bay. I had a great time!

Rating for tour operator:

I have travelled before with McKinlay Kidd so expected the best and was not disappointed! They are always helpful, informative and always ready to go that extra mile for you. I would particularly like to say a big thank you to Tom Hamilton for dealing with the unfortunate issues surrounding my Fair Isle trip, for keeping me informed at all times and making sure that my holiday was not compromised in any way. Their Vamoos App and information provided was easy to use and very informative and helpful. I would recommend using McKinlay Kidd to anyone. I am looking forward very much to my next holiday - to Ireland - with the company.

Our transportation, whether by train, ferry or taxi was well coordinated and reliable for the most part. The 15 day tour itself was self guided for the majority of the time, which gave us the freedom to explore our interests. Everything went like clockwork with very little issue. We came away feeling that we saw and experienced much of rural Scotland.

Rating for tour operator:

McKinlay Kidd is known for backing up their product and solving issues in an expedient manner. Their tours are well organized and coordinated with great itineraries. They research and select only the best and highly rated accommodations, tour operators and transportation services. I felt confident in receiving the best this company had to offer.
