This holiday was a complete disappointment, especially considering the premium price for the tour. Granted that the change of guide due to Covid and the transit strike could not have been completely foreseen, a good, competent company would have had contingency plans in place for both. I myself had solicited MK a week earlier to ask about the impact of the train strike. They knew in advance. The tour had little to do with trains. We missed the train north from Inverness, but that was not a big deal. The disappointment was not having a guide to explain anything en route. MK relied on one of our group -- fortunately a responsible person -- to convey information about our tour to everyone else. MK tried calling me by regular phone, not by WhatsApp as I had requested, so I never spoke to anyone about the changes of plans. Your insistence on a train ride the last day was ridiculous. Staying on the coach would have made much more sense since we had to carry our luggage up, across, and down a steep structure to reach the train, and that train ride was short and far from picturesque. Unless you are traveling on the Royal Scotsman, you shouldn't call this a train tour at all.

Rating for tour operator:

Our substitute guide did the best he could given that he was thrown into our group last minute and was not adequately prepared. I had expected to learn more about this region and its history, customs, wildlife, food, and Dan was not an expert on any of those things. Even in the area where he said he was knowledgeable (archeology), he clearly had a good layman's knowledge, not a scholarly background. He was competent under the circumstances but you seem not to have made those circumstances easy for him. Our original guide had met us with a kilt, but he wasn't Scottish, so that already seemed strange. To their credit, the tour operator reached out to me (and the entire group) after the tour and solicited our opinion. The TO seemed to take the feedback seriously and indicated that changes would be made to avoid the problems our group encountered. The TO's interest in genuine improvement is a positive sign for the future.

McKinlay Kidd responded to this review on 05 Aug 2022:

I am genuinely sorry that you found the tour disappointing, Claudia. As we discussed at length on the phone after the trip, we were faced with exceptional circumstances of losing the planned guide to Covid on the first morning of the tour, giving us under an hour to source a replacement for the whole week-long tour. Our other McKinlay Kidd guides were already engaged with other groups and I’m afraid it is not feasible for us as a small, independent travel company to have guides on permanent standby ‘just in case’. Our office base is three hours away in Glasgow so we could not easily send an employee from there. Don, who stepped in, is a specialist guide in the North Highlands, based out of Thurso, with good knowledge of Orkney, and was the best option available in the circumstances. Given the very short notice, we did not have the time to provide him with our usual in-depth briefing on the tour itinerary and McKinlay Kidd, though obviously we did provide him with the key tour information.

In order to keep the itinerary on schedule, the group needed to travel north from Inverness independently and we were extremely grateful to a member of the group for helping to organise this. Regarding the issue of the train strike, the scheduled morning train from Inverness to Thurso was only cancelled by Scotrail on the Thursday before the group departure on the Monday. This was not part of a national rail strike but due to a ban on overtime working on Scotrail which resulted in ad hoc and late cancellations, so it was not at all predictable., though we were in daily contact with Scotrail regarding updates. We had two alternatives once notified: to organise a coach instead or to delay the group in Inverness and travel on the afternoon train. As the latter would have resulted in the group missing the scheduled tour or the Castle of Mey, which is a highlight of the tour for many, we chose the coach journey.

The Royal Scotsman is a very different style from the regular trains used on this and some of our other rail tours in Scotland and Ireland – it is an out and out luxury experience with a price to match - at least three times more expensive per day. As many other reviews on this website testify, we do our utmost at McKinlay Kidd to provide excellent value and authentic tailormade and escorted rail tours based on the scheduled train services.

Once again, I am very sorry that circumstances doubly conspired against us on your group’s departure. I do appreciate your feedback and we have taken on board your comments regarding the final train journey and adjusted future itineraries.

Kind regards

Whisky tasting safari in Scotland

Three of us went on a 10 day whisky tasting safari which we enjoyed immensely. We learnt something new at every distillery and the people, whisky and nature were outstanding.

Incomplete documentation necessitated frequent phone calls to the call centre Numerous agents handling our tour which led to confusion Transport was a no-show at Edinburgh airport after a 16 hour flight

McKinlay Kidd responded to this review on 08 Jul 2022:

Dear Nico
While we are delighted that you had such an enjoyable trip we are of course very disappointed that you have rated McKinlay Kidd as poor. We put a lot of time and effort into researching, creating and booking itineraries for all of our customers, especially fully tailor-made ones such as yours and pride ourselves on a high level of personal service as reflected in our overwhelmingly positive independent reviews on the AITO website. We are a small family business, not a call centre, and all members of the team are ready and willing to assist. As you know there were a number of late changes to the party composition and arrangements which necessitated frequent communications before and during the tour and I’m sorry if you felt this created any confusion. I have answered your more detailed feedback fully and we have apologised that one of our regular chauffeurs unexpectedly let us all down at the start of your trip and have refunded you for this.
Ultimately and most importantly, I am glad that you will be able to sip on a malt whisky and enjoy positive memories of your Scottish safari.
Kind regards

A fascinating and well organised holiday

We very much enjoyed the range of locations and experiences on our tour of the Highlands. The organisation was superb and, despite moving on every couple of days, it was very relaxing. We learnt a great deal about our shared history and were treated to local knowledge and hospitality everywhere we went.

We were directed to McKinlay Kidd by another tour operator who was snowed under with booking enquires at the time we requested help last November. McKinlay Kidd dealt very efficiently with our enquiry and we were sent a suitable itinerary very quickly. The holiday experience proved to be excellent with good communication from McKinlay Kidd who chose lovely places for us to stay and booked all the ferries for us.

Car free Outer Hebrides

McKinlay Kidd organised a tour of the main Outer Hebrides islands, which for us was totally car free. We had tours organised by them of Barra, North Uist, Harris and Lewis, all done by local guides, who were superb and gave us a realk insight into the history, culture and wildlife of the various islands. They were able to show the differences between all the islands. We stayed 2 nights in Barra, 2 nights in North Uist, 2 in Harris and 1 in Lewis...
