A very informative visit to Orkney through which I learnt a geat deal about the history & geography of the islands & a chance to see Scapa Flow, an important part of British naval history in both world wars. The 5,000 years old Neolithic sites make you stop & think.

A week of walking on the springy turf of Orkney, looking at Neolithic and Viking archaeological sites as well as at the geography and natural habitats of the birds.

Kudu Travel specialises in small group holidays focussed on walking: a van is used to get the group to the starting point. The guide is knowledgeable and informed and can always answer questions. There's no better way to get to know a place than having your feet on the ground; driving around doesn't do it in the same way.

Helpful and accomodating

We visited Kashan, the Zagros mountains, Shiraz, Yazd, Esfahan, and Tehran, spending 1-3 days in each and travelling by comfortable minibus between.

Kudu and their local agent Pasargad Tours put together a good programme of activities and a good set of hotels, and all arrangements worked virtually perfectly.

The holiday involved some beautiful walking in a variety of terrains - beach, heath, gorge and meadows. We found huge number of different birds and the wild flowers and orchids were plentiful and very colourful. The scenic walks were easy and leisurely varying from 1 hour to 3 hours. We saw some interesting prehistoric Taulas at well documented site giving good information about the archaeological detail. The hotel was a very attractive building in a rural location. Gourmet meals and fine wines were the order of the day served by very knowledgeable, attentive staff. Menorca is a beautiful fairly quiet island offering a wide selection of activities.

Kudu specializes in walking tours featuring bird watching and plants and cultural activities. The company is small with friendly, helpful staff who are very knowledgeable about the areas they deal with, involving a great deal of research and attention to details.

Kudu Travel make great personal efforts to visit and select the best less travelled locations, local guides, food and wine and their group size is always small. As a result, this was our twelfth trip with them in the last ten years.

We stayed on three islands - Grenada, Union and Bequia - visited and had a tour, lunch and swim on Cariiacou and sailed for the day to Mustique. We used seven different kinds of vessels for our journeys and enjoyed them all - a highlight was Bequia to Mustique on the Friendship Rose, a schooner which had been built on the bay on which we were staying in the 1960s. We experienced the profusion of tropical vegetation in our garden visits, especially on Grenada and loved being able to swim, shiver free, in the seas from idyllic palm fringed sandy beaches.

Kudu Travel provided us with a formidable guide who was a perfect ‘fixer’, expert in many fields, as well as an energetic and friendly travel companion. The company is experienced in travel in these areas and we benefited from their thorough knowledge and acquaintance with so many of the service staff on the trip.

We had a very wet start, but I am learning that lush tropical islands do get a lot of rain! The scenery, once visible, was stunning, reflecting its young volcanic history. The people are friendly and knowledgeable, the accommodation comfortable, even luxurious, and the food, a mixture of french and Creole cuisine, was very tasty. We had a good sampling of the geology, industries, history and biology of the island, in our tour around the coast and up into the cirques.

Kudu is a small, very friendly company, and on every tour we meet people we have seen before. We are like one big happy family, yet always welcoming new faces.

Following in the footsteps of Patrick Leigh Fermor, famous travel writer, we visited the places he had visited and written about 60 years ago. Some of these places have hardly changed in the intervening years. An interesting experience.
