We are a couple in our mid sixties who holiday several times a year but had never been to the Canary Islands because of the popular myths about the all inclusive anonymous culture. Looking for a holiday which we could access from our local airport and a wish to escape the english winter I found Cachet Travel on the Internet and asked for their recommendations. We have just returned from a really enjoyable and interesting fortnight spent on Tenerife and La Palma. We did indeed see the endless timeshares and hotels but only from the main road entering and leaving the airports. We stayed in 3 beautiful and friendly small hotels and enjoyed local hospitality and scenery. The weather in February was cloudy more than sunny and I think you may have had much more sun in the time share areas. However we were outside every day all day and there was plenty to interest us from museums to scenery to salt flats, volcanoes, rocky beaches and wine and lovely sea food in pretty restaurants and bars.

We couldn't be more happy with the service provided by Cachet Travel. They were always quick to respond to any enquiry. They listened to our ideas about what we were looking for and came back with several choices and descriptions to help us decide on where to stay. Their recommendations were wonderful and all their arrangements worked perfectly. We will definitely travel with them again to the Canary Islands.

Cachet Travel responded to this review on 16 Feb 2016:

Thank you for your kind feedback. We're delighted that our suggestions and recommendations worked out well for you and helped you to explore some of the more authentic parts of the Canary Islands, even if the weather in those areas was not as sunny as in the main tourist resorts. We hope to be able to arrange another holiday to the Canaries - or one of our other featured destinations - for you soon.

Amid the laurisilva forest (a rainforest ecosystem covering much of the centre of the island) charred stumps of trees outnumbered the healthy green growth at times. Burnt logs were stacked at intervals along the path. Bald patches appeared along the forest floor. It’s heartbreaking to see the contrast between the living and the dead wood. The living laurel woods grow higgledy-piggledy up to the sky obscuring the view or offering tantalising glimpses of blue through lacy leaves. The deadwood lays flat and charcoal black against the ground. It’s even sadder when you remember that, after the fire had been dampened down, when the fire-fighters had assessed the damage, there was a strong suspicion that the fire had been started deliberately. Who would want to destroy La Gomera’s crowning glory? It’s hard to imagine. Despite the charred remains, La Gomera still has charms enough to keep keen walkers happy for a week or two and sun seekers find warmth enough to worship on the sunny coast. Any visitor to La Gomera, however, would do well to remember the island’s central rainforest means that, on any day, the centre of the island can be enveloped in mist, if not heavy cloud. Walkers need to make like Scouts and be prepared! We stayed in Valle Gran Rey, a charming little resort which remains, for the most part, true to its hippy roots (but with lots more home comfort!). A short walk from the port at Vueltas brings you to the community at the Finca Arguyall (its name means ‘place of light’) which offers meditation and silent contemplation in its beautiful grounds. A stroll along the seafront at La Puntilla will reveal Yoga Workshops, massage therapies and holistic treatments. And you may also see some of the hippies who live in caves further down the coast who come into Valle Gran Rey to juggle, drum and dance against the sunset;for a small donation in the hat, of course. Accommodation is in plentiful supply but nowhere will you find built up areas. The largest hotel on the island, Jardin Tecina in Play Santiago, consists of bungalows and low buildings. In Valle Gran Rey we stayed in Residencial El Llano; like much of the accommodation in the resort this was a collection of self catering apartments around a central, shaded pool. It was clean, cool and quiet (although Trip advisor does warn that some apartments, those near to the supermarket, can be noisy). I can’t imagine this island becoming commercialised somehow. It seems to have hit just the right balance between comfort and authenticity. I was sad to leave this beautiful island after a week and will return again, I hope. There are plenty of walks still to tread, and many sunsets still to watch. I look forward to seeing the ravages of the forest fire fading and healing in the years to come.

Everything was organised well. No holdups and, when we had to wait (e.g. for our hire car) we were kept informed at all times. I've used Cachet a number of times in the past, mainly in the Canary Islands. The accommodation can sometimes be a little too rustic for my taste (I think that probably says more about me than them!)but I've never had a bad holiday with them. Every Cachet property I've stayed in has been in an excellent location and I've seen some islands that I wouldn't have ventured to without their help.

Cachet Travel responded to this review on 09 Feb 2016:

Thank you so much for your detailed review of your holiday on La Gomera. Naturally, it is sad to see the traces of the wild fires in the centre of the island, but I'm glad that this did not stop you from appreciating the beauty and unique charm of the rest of the island. Thank you for your loyalty to Cachet Travel - I hope we'll be able to arrange many more holidays for you in the future.

Great holiday on La Graciosa

As first time visitors to the Canaries, we were looking for somewhere off the beaten track to relax and get away from it all. Thorsten was very helpful at the time of booking, offering good suggestions and arranging flights, transfers and accommodation. Everything went very smoothly and we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday... great walking, beautiful beaches and fabulous weather.

A well organised relaxing holiday in special accommodation

We spent 8 days on La Palma Island in the Canaries. The first 3 were in the Parador de La Palma hotel near the capital, Santa Cruz and we then crossed the island in our hire car to self catering accommodation high up in the hills on the other side of the island. We had an excellent time. La Palma is a pretty island with enough interesting places to visit to keep us occupied as well as many beaches and plentiful seafood for more relaxing days...

It is quieter and less touristy than the other Canary islands which was to our liking as well. Well done Cachet Travel with your excellent accommodation choices which were just a bit more special; comfortable, peaceful and well located.

Thorsten Fibelkorn at Cachet Travel was extremely helpful and efficient, arranging a specially tailored 2 centre holiday that was just what we wanted. All arrangements went without any hitches and we are grateful for his helpful advice.

Cachet Travel responded to this review on 23 Nov 2015:

Thank you very much for your feedback. I am delighted that the two-centre option worked out so well for you, and that the travel arrangements from your preferred local airport via Tenerife all went smoothly. With so few direct flights from the UK, La Palma is not the easiest Canary Island to get to, so I am glad that you found it worth the effort!

sitting back and feeling I could do this for a long time

two weeks in Balos (S.E Samos) in October in a quiet relaxing atmosphere. At this time of year the tourist season is almost over although the weather is still very warm ..sitting outside enjoying a leisurely breakfast on the balcony in shorts and t-shirt. The main decision to make do I go in the pool in the morning or in the afternoon? I don't know about watching the world go by out here it seems to have gone into pauise mode.

Unforseen and unavoidable problems meant some last minute changes to our holiday booking arrangements had to be made by the operator (Cachet) These were done quickly and meant that in no way was our holiday adversely affected. The travel arrangements meant we had to change flights in Athens but the details were all clearly set out and when we arrived in Samos the rep. was there to explain the modified accomodation arrangements and again no problems. When things are well organised and run well it gives the customer peace of mind and makes the holiday totally stress free

Thank you for your kind comments. We're glad that you had such an relaxing time in Samos and that the changes did not disrupt your enjoyment unduly!

Perfect stay with Princess Tia in Samos in an unspoilt location where it is genuinely quiet.

An apartment in a quiet village by the sea with a pool and a few good value tavernas within walking distance. The hospitality and helpfulness was superb. The rooms were meticulously maintained and nothing was too much trouble.

Accommodation brilliant 1st week, appalling 2nd week

First week at Karfas, Chios in beachside accommodation was very good, clean and quiet. The second week we had booked was at a house in Mesta. After 1 very uncomfortable night we contacted the local rep who agreed to move us - and managed to get us back into the same place in Karfas...

After 1 very uncomfortable night we contacted the local rep who agreed to move us - and managed to get us back into the same place in Karfas. So overall disappointed that we had these problems and lost 2 days of our holiday moving,

Rating for tour operator:

Local agent was very helpful when I contacted him with the problems, however having been back a week I have heard nothing from Cachet Travel in terms of apologies etc - and the holiday was not cheap.

Cachet Travel responded to this review on 16 Jun 2015:

We are very sorry that your second accommodation had not been adequately prepared for the start of the summer season and we apologise for any disappointment and inconvenience that this caused you. We are pleased that our local agent was able to resolve the issue swiftly by arranging for you to move back to the preferred accommodation in Karfas.

Cachet Travel responded to this review on 16 Jun 2015:

As we were under the impression that the issue had been resolved locally and had been advised by our local agent that you would contact us on your return with more details, we were waiting to hear from you, so please accept our apologies for not being more proactive in contacting you. I hope that our subsequent exchange of emails has helped to explain the situation and that, in spite of the disappointment with your brief stay in Mesta, you will have fond memories of your holiday on Chios.

Peaceful time in North Tenerife

Spent two weeks in a lovely romantic cottage half way up a mountain in North Tenerife with stunning view of Mt Teide. Close to beautiful pine forests in vineyards and countryside. Many places to visit - the national park of Teide, unmissable, take the cable car to the top and walk in the moonscapes around, black sand beaches with dramatic cliffs, the northern Anaga mountain area and many towns of interest.
