Day 2: Yangon touring

Enjoy a walking tour of Yangon. Begin this half day tour at Maha Bandoola Street and stroll through Chinatown. This quarter of the city is especially alive during the mornings with fresh markets for vegetables, meat, and flowers. Stroll past colourful Chinese temples, steaming roadside food stalls, fruit vendors, and glittering gold shops. Stop at a typical shop to watch the making of flat rice noodles and rice flour pancakes. Continue into the bustling Indian Quarter, passing Hindu temples, the Jewish Synagogue and the famous art deco Bogyoke Aung San or Scott’s Market. Next take a trishaw, passing colonial style municipal and government offices before ending the tour with a drink at the historic Strand Hotel.

This national landmark in the heart of downtown Yangon confers a sense of its rich history to all who pass through its colonnaded exterior and enter the marble floor lobby, following in the footsteps of past guests, Somerset Maugham, George Orwell, Sir Noel Coward and Rudyard Kipling among them.

The afternoon will be at leisure, or we can recommend tours to a local village across the river.
