It also had privacy windows, so with all the heads, neck rests and darkened black glass, it was impossible to see out. The tour details clearly stated the that it was not necessary to leave the transport to see the wildlife! Ha!! This transit van was intended only for small school children and the cost did no include travel to the start point. On return, I asked Naturetrek.. I was curious why we were all in such an undersized transit van. The reply in writing was that Naturetreck did not know you could get bigger transport! A case of cramming as many people into a van as possible and charging the most. Forget any chance of Customer Service on return Accommodation. First hotel. The toilet seat was unbelievable. Disgusting. Brown chips all over the white surface; both tap heads immediately came off as I touched them and I had to explain to the staff they needed Arolditing back on, which they knew; someones hairs in the shower on arrival....Food portions, so small I refused the risotto.

We were very disappointed to read Mr Price’s review of the Naturetrek holiday he undertook to Islay and Jura in October 2016 – in particular the dissatisfaction he reports concerning the comfort of the mini-coach and the Islay hotel we used, and our post-tour communication.
Mr Price did telephone us upon his return from this holiday to advise us that the tinted windows were not ideal for wildlife viewing and that the vehicle was cramped. As he states here, we chose to use a 14-seater vehicle for our party of 12. However, it was not a ‘transit van that was intended only for small school children’, as he describes it, but a hire vehicle used primarily for adult tour groups. That said, we agreed with Mr Price that the vehicle was not ideal given the increasing amounts of optical equipment that our customers understandably like to take with them on holiday these days, and we made our apology for this, which we understood to be accepted. In recognition of this point, to provide our ‘Islay and Jura’ clients with more space, we have been using two 9-seater minibuses, rather than one 14-seater mini-coach, to accommodate our groups since Mr Price’s tour in 2016. Although we endeavour to do so in all the many areas of the world in which we operate, guaranteeing the provision of modern tourist vehicles that do not have tinted windows, and which offer all of our clients a window that opens (as most would prefer), is unfortunately not always possible since so many modern tourist vehicles have fixed tinted windows.
The issues with the hotel of our choice on Islay, that Mr Price reports here, should have been resolved at the time by the hotel’s manager, who is normally excellent. It is to our great regret that this seemingly did not happen on this occasion and we have apologised to Mr Price. The hotel in question is the Bridgend Hotel, one of the two best on the island. It is a hotel which is generally extremely popular with all of the many Naturetrek clients who stay there, and also other visitors. Indeed the hotel is very highly rated on Trip Advisor, from whom it has been awarded a ‘Certificate of Excellence’. At Naturetrek our goal is to choose small private hotels offering both character and all-round quality – the ‘best available’ in any given locality. The Bridgend Hotel has previously met, and continues to meet, these high standards – both in our view and that of our clients.
With regard to the post-tour communication about which Mr Price complains, we discussed amicably his two issues of concern when he telephoned a senior member of our staff immediately after his holiday, and we believed that they had been addressed to Mr Price’s satisfaction at that time. It was not until three months later that Mr Price chose to complete and return to us the Naturetrek questionnaire that had been posted to him at the time of his holiday. Regrettably, in acknowledging and responding to his questionnaire we did not also take into account his conversation three months earlier, and this failure by us to link the two has understandably frustrated Mr Price, for which we are very sorry indeed.
To end on a positive note, the wildlife objectives of this holiday were more than met and this was reflected in the excellent feedback that we received from all other clients who travelled with Mr Price on this tour. They enjoyed both the content of the holiday and the Bridgend Hotel, but like Mr Price some felt that more space was required in the vehicle to accommodate all their equipment. naturetrek always seem to give me trips I enjoy very much. They are not manic -as with birding trips where you are up every morning at 5am and in the car park by 6am; but they do manage to let you see lots of wildlife. I've been to Ethiopia, Nepal and Spain with them and it's always beeen good.

Butterflies in the Dolomites
The guides, Jessica and Luca were extremely knowledgeable and informative. The hotel, the Gran Mogan was amazing and faultless on cleanliness, and the variety of excellent food could not be surpassed. The staff were always cheerful and helpful. All in all a wonderful holiday and we will certainly travel with Naturtrek again.

2017 NARGS Dolomite private tour
6 days of hikes in the Fasa Valley, Dolomites of Italy. Each day we hiked a different valley - each one seemingly more breathtaking than the last. Our tour guides were extremely knowledgeable and observant so we were able to optimize our time viewing not just the plants, which was the main focus of our trip, but also birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. I loved the small size of our group and our lodging was very well chosen - off the beaten path in a quaint hamlet. The itinerary was a brisk one so now I need a vacation from my vacation - just the way I like to travel!

We had 2 - they complemented each other nicely - and between them I don't think we missed seeing a single species of plant or animal on our hikes. They were extremely knowledgeable and acutely observant.

Fantastic Flowers and Congenial Company
Four of my family joined the other 13 in a family-run hotel just made for us. The leader, who met us and guided us all the way from Zurich airport, was good company, well-organised and very knowledgeable. Well-organised, realistic prices and good choice of leader. Booklets and travel were clear and turned out to be accurate.

Birds & Flowers in Sicily
A weeks birdwatching with some flower hunting - followed by a week Flower Hunting with some bird watching in Sicily. Really good place to visit with guides in the Spring (when not too hot and not too many people about!)

Natural History of the Gol Plateau, Norway
We spent a week in a peaceful plateau area of Central Norway, mostly gentle walking to look at the wildlife, with a few longer trips by train and minibus. It was all very well organized so that we saw the best of the area, with an excellent hotel as our base, and a very good leader who made sure that we were all able to pursue our own particular interests.

The Magic of the Isle of Mull
This was a tour of Mull's lovely scenery and a quest to find the rare and amazing wildlife that lives there. Butterfly Bonanza in fabulous France
From start to finish, this was a winner. Really good communications with staff at Naturetrek. Very thorough paperwork as background and planning. I was not alone in pronoucing, on the way home on the ferry, that I would be happy to repeat the tour another year. There wasn't an idle moment - we were butterflying from the first day, offered optional pre-breakfast birding walks, and housed in a hotel that presented the very best of Normandy cuisine. Plus a memorable visit to the Bayeux tapestry and Manet-like picnics in beautiful locations. Who could ask for more?

As mentioned above, Naturetrek has created the very best of impressions. Very friendly and informative staff on the end of phone lines, a very inclusive pack of essential information for planning ahead and the inclusion of reports from previous tours to give a picture of what to expect. Very impressive. Faultless, in fact.
