Rating for tour operator:

Naturetrek are very efficient at organising wildlife tours and find excellent guides to accompany the group, visiting sites that are clearly well planned in advance to see as much wildlife as possible.

Corsica - The (Un)scented Isle (Spring)

`Unscented` because the weather was cold and wet apart from the 1st 2 days; obviously nobody's fault but perhaps going at the end of April is too much of a risk. `Unscented` because the weather was cold and wet apart from the 1st 2 days; obviously nobody's fault but perhaps going at the end of April is too much of a risk. The first hotel, in Evisa, had not changed much since the 1980's but we were lucky to have a `superior` room, cold but with lovely views of the mountains. The breakfasts were basic and could have been improved with the addition of some cheese or plain yoghurt; I enjoyed the dinners more - no choice but 3 courses of Corsican specialities. The Spelunca Gorge walk was hard going making it difficult to look at plants & birds. The second hotel in the Restonica Valley nr Corte was newly refurbished and had a wonderful selection at breakfast - it was only a shame that we didn't have time to enjoy them more. Superb 3 course set meals were taken at the nearby sister hotel. I enjoyed Corte and would have liked to see more of it. The two approachable leaders were experts in their subjects and & prepared lovely picnics. It was my first Naturetrek holiday and I chose it as I didn't think I could do a walking holiday of Corsica so I think the Spelunca Gorge day should be re-thought as it is more suited to experienced walkers. Also, in my opinion this holiday had too much box ticking of bird and plant species; I realise this is what a lot of Naturetrek regulars want but if you are not a complete bird or plant fanatic this is probably not the holiday for you. I had thought I would opt out of certain parts of the holiday but in practice this proved difficult. I would not choose such a specialist holiday in future.

Everything went to plan; the flights were good and the minibuses were waiting for us at the airport (although one of them was smaller than it should have been). It would be good to know before you book which hotels are going to be used as I learned that the second holiday due to take place after ours was going to stay in a different hotel and town for the second part of the holiday. I am trying to rate this holiday `Good` but the system doesn't recognise this so it might have to be `Average` instead!

BIRD WATCHING IN THE CAMARGUE

We visited various sites in the Camargue region attempting to see lots of birds that we couldn't see in the UK. Our guide helped us identify all the birds, not always an easy task. This included a visit to the Parc Ornithologique where we saw hundreds of flamingos and a visit to a colony of bee eaters. Our stay was in a small friendly hotel with good food and comfortable rooms. Picnic lunches provided were enjoyed by all. As we were only ...

A brilliant experience

This Naturetrek holiday took us to the eastern edge of Poland, with forests and fens, teeming with interesting plants, birds, insects etc. Highlights included seeing six species of woodpecker in one day, also bison, elk and beaver.

Wildlife in Romania - Carpathian Mountains & Danube delta

A great mix of habitats from mountain meadows & open wood, to gorge walks, followed by a cross country transfer to the delta stopping at lakes and wildflower meadows. Our home on the delta was the 'mother ship' moving along the main channels with great views from the upper desks. You might say the hide moves past the birds. Mooring up at lunchtime and evening/overnight for meals and overnight. Each day am/pm the group moves on using a well appointed day boat meeting the mother ship in a new location. Catering was fine adapted to suit all group members and a birthday cake too. Lucky me. A great way to mark a special birthday. Our third base was a comfortable town based guesthouse, allowing trips to lagoons & hills. Along the coastal area. The mix of birds, bears, flowers, butterflies/insects, reptiles etc although challenging at times was just what we wanted. For those who might be less mobile this trip would be a great choice.

Rating for tour operator:

Direct booking, well organised and efficient office, especially if you are a repeat customer. Extras easily sorted. On 'musical on-hold' the member of team answering deals with most things. E-mail issues replied within 24 hours. Great high quality printed brochure combined with an excellent Web site. Back record of previous trip reports and client photos. As you might expect a good knowledgable locally based wildlife expert to support the UK based tour leader. Good land based transport.

Thrilling experience with excellent guiides

Our whale watching trip in the Azores exceeded expectations with over 40 cetacean sitings. CW Azores, the local company, are a very professional operation and all the staff were fully committed to giving us the best experiences while fully respecting the animals. The NatureTrek guide Cathy Harlow was second to none.
