Sweden - short Winter break
Bird-oriented guided tour of region North West of Stockholm (Black River Valley). Visited a number of forest feeding stations, saw some interesting localised Northern European species (eg Siberian Jay, Three-toed Woodpecker, Nutcracker), some uncommon birds occurring in Britain (Crossbill, Brambling, Hawfinch) including several species having Northern races (Long-tailed Tit, Willow Tit, Nuthatch, Mealy Redpoll). Naturetrek provided good communication prior to the trip so that we were prepared for the journey, border control and climate. Our guide looked after us and was clearly an expert in the regional wildlife, including helping to maintain the impressive feeding stations.

Brilliant despite appalling weather
What a week! Despite the rain on the first day and the unpredictable forecast for the next few days making planning extremely challenging, we finally endured a battering from storm Eunice. However, the starlings put on an amazing show and the enthusiasm and optimism of our leaders was infectious among the group. Although it was not the anticipated holiday experience, I wouldn’t change a thing!

Costa Rica: excellent itinerary with excellent guiding
Visited an interesting variety of wildlife habitats, with much to see. Excellent guiudes meant that we saw much more than we would have done on our own, and guides appreciated that many of us wanted to see all sorts of things & weren't just birders wanting ticks for our life lists.

The Somerset Levels (Day Trip)
We had a wonderful day out bird watching on the Somerset Levels, with a total tally of 61 bird species. Our trip was organised by Naturetrek, who in my opinion are one of the best operators when it comes to Natural History tours. Our guide - Oliver Smart was extremely knowledgeable and we all learnt lots on the day, which will be very useful on future outings. I would highly recommend this trip and Naturetrek to anyone interested in Birding ...

Their guides are second to none. I recommend them to all. Their website is a mine of information and easy to navigate. They deserve all the accolades they have received.

wonderful nature holiday in Costa Rica
We stayed in several different places in southern Costa Rica, by the coast and in the mountains. It was mostly bird watching with some other wildlife. the accommodation and food was excellent and everybody was very welcoming.

A winter birding holiday with magic moments.
We spent two days near the Wash and nearby nature reserves and were able to watch the spectacle of thousands of geese flying across the early morning sky on their way to their feeding grounds and thousands of knots performing their murmuration which even included a "sine wave". We then moved to the Norfolk Broads and with astute knowledge of the area, our tour guide was able to find cranes, little owls and three species of egrets including ...

We then moved to the Norfolk Broads and with astute knowledge of the area, our tour guide was able to find cranes, little owls and three species of egrets including the rare cattle egret and even an elusive water rail. My highlight was the spectacle of hundreds of young seals clustered together on a beach with the North Sea rolling in.
Rating for tour operator:

Naturetrek provided us with a tour leader who had a comprehensive knowledge of the area which not only included the wildlife and where to find it but also the geography and history of Norfolk. This made for a much wider holiday than just bird watching. The accommodation was very comfortable and the food excellent.

Matt located us at London St Pancras and saw us on to the Eurostar for our journey to Rotterdam. Once we arrived and met up with one guest who had flown direct we walked a short distance to collect our mini-bus. Matt had excellent knowledge of where to locate birds and on route to our first hotel took us to a location where flamingos were feeding. This also coincided with sunset and the seeing the flamingos flying in the setting sunlight was fantastic. The first hotel we stayed in was very comfortable with excellent food and very friendly staff who made us very welcome. The second day we left the hotel and went to various locations on route to our second hotel where we would send the remaining three nights. On route we saw numerous species of wildfowl which I had never seen before including Spoonbills. The second hotel was again very comfortable and set in mature woodland which meant we could go for early morning walks before we set out for a day of birding. Matt managed to locate some great locations where we saw numerous birds and for me even more exciting was that they were species I had not seen before such a Goshawk, Smew, Cranes, White-Tailed Eagles & Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers. Being a very amateur bird watcher it was great to be in the company of some very experienced bird waters who made my holiday a great short break holiday.
Rating for tour operator:

I found Naturetrek and in particular their guide Matt excellent in looking after the group and his extensive knowledge of birds and natural history. The hotels used were very good and I particularly enjoyed taking our lunch breaks at local eateries which offered a great selection of food. I was so impressed with the holiday on my return I have booked another birding and flora 8 day break “Crete in Spring”.
