Walking Tour along Hadrian's Wall

My brother and I started at Segedunum (Newcastle) and walked our way across the country to Bowness on Solway. It was a great walking holiday with good food, very nice B&B's and many friendly people. It was a good experience.

Rating for tour operator:

The basics are that the B&B's were always expecting us and our luggage was awaiting. There was never a problem. The packed lunches were always bountiful and delicious. On top of that was that the B&B's were very nice and comfortable and the hosts were helpful and friendly. I believe that Mickledore provided a very nice selection of B&B's for the nightly lodging.

Hadrian's Wall Trek

A fabulous week of walking - five of us walked the full trail from East to West. It was tough on some days, either in terms of miles or terrain but what a feeling of achievement when we finished! I wanted to mark turning 50 by completing the Wall and am lucky to have friends daft enough to think this was a good way to spend a week!

The organisation was first class and very efficient, any queries in the lead-up to the holiday were answered straight away, information provided in the pack was detailed and meticulous and the accommodation chosen and booked for us by Mickledore was fabulous! We can't wait to do our next holiday with them in Summer 2017!

Blessed with good weather we arrived in Morpeth looking forward to our weeks walking the Northumberland coastal path. Accommodation from our start point in Morpeth until Berwick was either good or excellent. The walk itself was enjoyable but not spectacular, some of the coastal views were stunning but rather too many golf courses to contend with and caravan sites. Walking over to Holy Island was a challenge as there were far to many cars sharing the route. We did see a seal close up and a rewarding pub lunch was enjoyed. On another day we saw a red squirrel. The route was badly signed and at times you had to rely on the guidebook. It is not a challenging walk and the daily distances averaged around 12 miles.

This is our second holiday with Mickledore, the first was the South Downs Way, and have no hesitation in recommending them.

Mickledore Travel responded to this review on 22 Sep 2016:

Thank you for your feedback. We are pleased you enjoyed your second holiday although you didn't find the scenery as spectacular as other walks. Its good to hear that you were pleased with the accommodation we selected for you and we hope that we can arrange a third walk for you soon.

Mickledore Holidays provided us with fabulous service and a wonderful walking holiday. Everything came together as planned. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the holiday. As foreigners, Mickledore gave us the confidence we needed to tackle a walking, rural holiday. Can't wait to take another into Scotland.

Overall a very enjoyable, well organised trip.

Six of us walked from Chipping Campden to Bath in eight days and with the help of Mickledore it was a wonderful, stress free experience. The weather surely helped but then so did our welcoming hosts who received us at the end of each hot, tiring day, some even with an ice cold beer, don’t be fooled into thinking the Cotswold Way is a walk in the park. Thank you Denise at Troy House, Painswick who was especially kind and we were lucky to enjoy ...

The weather surely helped but then so did our welcoming hosts who received us at the end of each hot, tiring day, some even with an ice cold beer, don’t be fooled into thinking the Cotswold Way is a walk in the park. Thank you Denise at Troy House, Painswick who was especially kind and we were lucky to enjoy two nights of comfy beds and white fluffy towels, not to mention the range of free toiletries and sumptuous breakfast. In fact all the accommodation that Mickledore booked us into was faultless. Not to mention the transportation of the luggage, the guides and maps – we were given three sets – and the extra information regarding places to eat for both lunch and dinner. This is the second time we have booked a walking holiday with Mickledore and we were not disappointed so we are currently planning our third for next year when we hope to walk the Westmorland Way. Thank you Mickledore. Judi, Anne-Marie, Jennifer, Mary, Marilyn and Malcolm Cotswold Way, July 2016

Rating for tour operator:

This is the second time we have used Mickledore and we were not disappointed. They are extremely helpful and efficient. They also take time to cover every eventuality even giving information on where the public loos can be found!

I of course knew something about Hadrian's Wall from school days, and wanted to see it. With the prompt and flexible help of Mickledore Travel, I was able to spend three days hiking the best parts of the Wall, four nights in great B&Bs, was provided good maps and directions and suggestions, all rather at the last minute (never have been a good long range planner...). I hiked from Corbridge in the east to Gilsland in the west, appreciated the frequent and very accessible train service to and from my base in southern England (wish we had train service like this in the States), and really had a marvelous time, meeting interesting people, finding everyone helpful and accommodating. For a few wonderful days I was with the Roman army manning the Wall and fighting off those pesky Scots and Picts!

Rating for tour operator:

Mickledore Travel was prompt, efficient, very helpful in helping me arrange this trip, all done on-line, one or two telephone calls. I'd certainly use them again.

Mickledore Travel responded to this review on 06 Sep 2016:

Thank you for taking the time to give your feedback, we are really pleased you had a good time. Hadrian's Wall is certainly a great combination of an educational and physical walk and you certainly made the most of your short time in the UK. It's great to hear that you enjoyed the accommodations as well. I hope you will be able to let us organise another holiday in the future!

They included a very comprehensive information pack for the walking holiday which was very helpful for things like booking evening meals and where to find the nearest chemist as well as good quality maps. We were mainly fortunate with the weather in Scotland, which always helps of course, but we were very impressed with the quality of the B and Bs and luggage service. All the restaurants recommended were good which was a relief to me as I was booking not just for us but for 8 German friends who had booked with a different company. It was a very good holiday. The only downside was blisters mainly caused by long stretches of hard flat canal paths and it might be that trainers are better for those sections of the walk rather than walking boots.

Rating for tour operator:

See above. Very efficient and comprehensive service. Very professional and helpful at the end of the phone. Can't imagine a better service. An American solo traveller who had also booked with Mickledore for the same holiday said they were endlessly patient with her as she had perhaps more queries than a British person would have.

Mickledore Travel responded to this review on 06 Sep 2016:

Thank you for your lovely feedback, its great to hear that the information in the holiday pack was so useful for you and your companions and helped with your arrangements. Its also great to hear that you received excellent service by telephone when you needed to contact us. We always try to answer calls quickly and give as much help as we can.
I hope that you will be back to do another walk soon.

Rating for tour operator:

Mickledore were fantastic from start to finish! Their booking process was straightforward and they were very knowledgeable about the routes and options for the distance to be covered each day. The staff tailored the holiday to suit our wishes and our accomodation was booked as soon as the deposit was paid. I will definately book with Mickledore again! I've got the bug regarding long distance walks and I trust Mickledore to do a fantastic job every time!

WE love UK and we love to walk there. B&B are very hospitality and the hosts are nice and friendly.

Last year we walked the wall. Some of the legs where to long for us. And the weather was very wet. But we did it somehow. Sometimes we was not able to find the right path. The marking has an improvement. This year we walked from Wessex to Berwick upon Tweed. Walking along the east cost was fantastic. And the weather was sunny and nice. We had a grate tour. Above all we experienced a part of UK we did not know. Small cities and pleasant atmosphere...

Above all we experienced a part of UK we did not know. Small cities and pleasant atmosphere. B&B are magnificent to stay in. Nice and caring people who really do their best to make your stay an experience to remember. Personally I would like to have more time to talk with people finding out how life is in UK. It is different from Norway in many ways.

Rating for tour operator:

We had good maps and the tour directions where mostly accurate and it was easy to find the right path. To find the place to spend the night was not so easy all the time. Remember, we are foreigners and we have not been at those places before. Well, we made it by asking local people. Some directions could have been more accurate. But we are, all over, content with the tour operator. And nothing in the world is perfect. We are now thinking about Wales or the Hebrides. Time will show what we will do. We can, however, absolutely recommend this kind of holly day to everyone.
