A Great Walking Holiday

After a very successful Mickedore organised walking holiday on Hadrian's Wall in 2017 my wife and I booked the Great Glen Way Walk though the same company this year. The route follows the Caledonian Canal from Fort William to Fort Augustus and then through more challenging country to Inverness over. Overall the path is about 127 Kilometres long and we took 7 days to walk with one rest day at Fort Augustus. Walking is a great pleasure for us ...

Walking is a great pleasure for us as - we like walking - it enables a more intimate experience with the countryside than in a vehicle. Its easy to stop, rest, and enjoy the view. There was plenty of magnificent scenery along our route. Especially on the track high above Loch Ness. Away from the sweeping views the track takes you through some pretty special forests and moorlands. Signposting was very good and there is no way to get lost. It was nice having our luggage transported and that there was a comfortable room and hot shower at the end of a sweaty day (it was a Scottish heatwave), and the promise of a cool ale. It was hard work overall but worth every step.

Rating for tour operator:

Mickledore did an excellent job of arranging the walk and providing easy to read and understand information. Our previous good experience with this company gave us confidence that everything would be arranged and that we were prepared for the walk. There was one hitch at Invermoriston where the transport operator got a little confused about where he was to take us but this was quickly sorted by Mickledore. We have found that if there are any problems on the trail Mickledore sort these out quickly and with a minimum of fuss. Very happy to keep dealing with this company.

Best of Hadrian's Wall

We had a few wonderful days with typical English weather, sun, rain and wind, everything was there. Beautiful landscape to walk through and the remains of the wall are fascinating from a historical point of view.

The accommodations and luggage transfers were well arranged, nice b&b’s and friendly people. In particular the new building at Carraw farm was beautiful. Good that you booked our evening dinner there because it is really in the middle of nowhere, but with a spectacular view over the valley. We heard from the local taxi driver that Corbridge is a nicer town than Hexham, although the Beumont hotel was good. Too bad that everything there was fully booked. That was actually our only (minor) comment.

Mickledore Travel responded to this review on 31 Jul 2018:

Thank you for your feedback. Sometimes itinerary locations can get fully booked, particularly at popular times. We take a lot of care in selecting the accommodations that we use and I am pleased that you enjoyed the ones we chose for you.

We have been lucky enough to have been on several walking, cycling holidays in Europe and USA, Mickledore have so far been superior to other tour operators we have experienced, their eye for detail is uncanny! I really can't say enough about our whole Mickledore experience; we will be using their services again.

Thank you for your lovely feedback. It is great that the accommodations we selected for you and luggage transport services helped you to enjoy your holiday experience. We hope to welcome you back for your next walking adventure in the UK.

Stunning scenery on the Pembrokeshire Coast path

2nd leg of the Pembrokeshire coast path. Walked Amroth to Milford Haven April 2017 with Mickledore and have just come back from walking Milford Haven to St David's in 4 days in glorious weather (apart from Day 1 when yes it rained for a couple of hours!)

Always goes the 'extra mile' to endure that not only is the accommodation booked, the packed lunches arranged, and the luggage transfers sorted but also that you have a complete booklet of where you are staying each night, contact details for each B & B and also how to reach it from the coast path (if too far away they include taxi transfer to and from). You are also provided with, in our case, a Pembrokeshire Coast Path published walking book eg Cicerone, and plastic covered maps, tide tables, and a complete booklet of where to eat lunchtime (if not having packed lunches) and evening, taxi contact numbers, who to ring if things go wrong, PO, ATM details, public loos en route, chemists, etc and each B & B owner knows who to expect and if they have not arrived by 6.00pm they will contact Mickledore if walkers have not rung in to say they will be late. Very reassuring. They are also flexible. I also waked the Coast to Coast with friends over 2 years (2106/17) - we added one friend only days before setting off to walk the first half of the Coast to Coast for instance. In 2017 another friend joined us just for the last 5 days (she had walked the rest with another company in 2016 but had to stop due to a sudden family bereavement). She preferred our walking company and they were happy to add her to our itinerary. I am also dairy free, so all B & B owners were warned of this for breakfasts/packed lunches.

Everything went to plan : the weather (amazing), the landscape (varied, full of English charm) and the organization of the holiday by Mickledore.

Rating for tour operator:

Great accommodations perfectly located, all of them right on the walk or less than 10 minutes away, with welcoming hosts, perfect timing of the only taxi transfer I had on this walk with a nice and accommodating taxi driver. The walk was cleverly divided in stages long enough to enjoy the walk and short enough to enjoy everything else too. Every question I had has been answered to very quickly and with consideration. It was my 5th walk with Mickledore and definitely not my last. There is great comfort for a solo walker to walk with them.

Walking holidays is my new favorite hobby

We walked the St Cuthbert's Way from Melrose to Lindisfarne (Holy Island). Our B&Bs chosen by Mickledore were great, and our luggages awaited us upon each arrival. We could relax without any stress and just enjoy the magnificent sceneries we were walking in.

I had heard about Mickledore through my sister who walked The Hadrien wall in England and appreciated the comfort of Mickledore's organisation. They are very helpful, we exchanged some e-mails before the holidays, we received very good support (map, book, B&Bs information as well as useful information on each place we stayed, i.e. restaurants).

Hiking the Cleveland Coastal Way

In May 2018 I walked the coastal stretch of the Cleveland Way from Saltburn to Filey. Mickledore Walking Holidays booked the accommodation and arranged the transfer of my suitcase so that I was free to simply walk from one location to the other. What I loved the most was being able to set my own pace and stop and observe the little things along the path. What I loved the most was being able to set my own pace and stop and observe the little things along the path. I saw a young weasel, a deer, pheasants, slow worms, seabirds galore, wild garlic, bluebells, broom, unfurling bracken fronds and so much more. No decisions to make - except what I wanted for breakfast and where to eat on an evening - and no compromises. Five days away felt like I had had a fortnight's holiday. I would encourage other women out there who want to do something like this but are anxious about doing it alone to just go for it. The hosts are expecting you so there was always the reassurance that if I hadn't turned up and hadn't phoned, someone would be looking out for me.

Rating for tour operator:

Mickledore Travel were recommended to me so I had few expectations. I also knew next to nothing about the coast2coast route or a walking holiday. The folk at MT have been excellent, helping me choose and get setup for a walking event that incorporates 13 different overnight stays and transport. Everything went off like clockwork. MT also provided excellent documents, a handy book with all the details for my travels, maps and a C2C book. They also.have a great app for the phone which I used everyday. Lastly, any question I asked via the phone or email were very promptly answered. Can't fault MT in any way, would definitely use them again and recommend them to my friends.
