Had a good time, and I enjoyed myself.

A long weekend to visit the Baei de Somme Steam Festival in Picardy,France, which is held every 3 years. As I have been to the two previous festivals, I wanted to visit the event again as I enjoyed the experience.

STEAM TRAIN FESTIVAL IN FRANCE

The Baie de Somme Railway, in Northern France, holds a weekend steam railway festival every three years. There was intensive railway activity for enthusiasts, and two attractive little French seaside towns at St Valery sur Somme and Le Crotoy. The festival was thoroughly enjoyable. The travel arrangements ran smoothly, and the hotel in Abbeville was excellent.

Great fun with great steam trains and good food

A small group visit to the Baie de Somme Railway steam festival staying in Abbeville. Good group of people travelling by Eurostar and local trains to a brilliant festival in Picardie in which the whole area takes part. Well organised trip with a good hotel and great meals included. About 10 narrow gauge steam locos working trains in a lovely location with the added bonus for us of good birdwatching around the R Somme estuary. Not been before ...

initial information on the holiday was born out by the actual experience. Plenty of advance information provided enabling us to plan a little what we might do. Travel arrangements worked fine via Eurostar and local trains. Good hotel selected with adequate access to festival and very good breakfasts and rooms. Small group escorted by a knowledgeable leader. Did what it said it would, thoroughly enjoyed.

Indian Hill Railways

A 3 week holiday covering much of India, highlights of course the 3 hill railways to Shimla, Darjeeling and Ooty. Many contrasts of urban and rural India, poverty and wealth. Travel by rail very efficient, travel by road sometimes chaotic. We would love to return for a nature/ wildlife holiday.

Excellent combination of tourist and rail enthusiast activities based around Indian Hill Railways theme

Travelled all over India to visit sites of interest and also to travel on the historic Hill Railways to Shimla, Darjeeling and Ooty. Sites of interest included the Golden Temple, Wagah, Delhi temples, Taj Mahal, Chennai temples, tea garden, etc. All modes of transport were used to travel between locations, bus, train and plane. One of the train journeys required overnight travel giving us a great opportunity to see all aspects of Indian life...

Sites of interest included the Golden Temple, Wagah, Delhi temples, Taj Mahal, Chennai temples, tea garden, etc. All modes of transport were used to travel between locations, bus, train and plane. One of the train journeys required overnight travel giving us a great opportunity to see all aspects of Indian life. The hotel standards were quite variable, in major cities we stayed in 5-star accommodation, in the Hill Stations we stayed in older style hotels in great comfort, in the more rural areas we stayed in the best available in the locale, which could be a little rough. However the tour itinerary was quite clear about this from the outset - so we were prepared. The food in the hotels was generally to a high standard. At all times we were accompanied by an experienced UK based tour guide and a local guide. All arrangements went according to plan. At no time did we have any concerns about safety.

Rating for tour operator:

The unique feature about Ffestiniog travel is their knowledge of the rail enthusiast market. I am sure that being associated with an operating railway has helped them develop industry contacts around the world to make these tours so interesting. For example on the Darjeeling and Himalayan Railway we had a private steam train to travel along the whole of the line and we were also allowed to look round the railway works. As far as I am aware no other group has done that in recent times. At Shimla we were provided with private steam train to travel over part of the line. Again a rare event. However they took care to ensure that there was enough general site seeing on the tour to satisfy the interest of those not so keen on trains. Organisationally - couldn't fault them.

Ffestiniog Travel were excellent operators, obviously very knowledgeable about the itinerary. The pre-holiday information was comprehensive and the tour manager very helpful, at one time arranging to retrieve items left behind on the tour.

Sri Lanka by rail. A fantastic experience..a first for us and we would travel with this company again.

A long flight but worth it for the different experiences enjoyed. Top hotels, a wonderful local guide with personality plus who worked hard to make our holiday a memorable one. The travelling group was relatively small(15) and we all mixed well. A really different cultural experience and we learnt a lot about the old railways...a good legacy from the British. The tea was great too!

Ffestiniog Travel. A first with this company but we will go with them again. Perhaps a tailor made trip around Spain/ Portugal which a couple in our group did last year which was well organised and very successful .
