A great trip from Vienna to Venice with wonderful cities in between

The choice of cities was brilliant. Vienna, Graz, Ljubljana, Trieste and Venice. Tiring in 30C heat but worth it. Trains between the cities mostly worked well but Ljubljana station is a total building site and hard to find your way out of. It will be like that for a few years.

I would have rated Ffestiniog excellent but we really could have done with advance information on how to reach the hotels they booked for us once we arrived at the stations. Google and mobile connection was not always working. Mostly we walked but sometimes it needed a tram or even a taxi (if the queue wasn't enormous). Having to work all this out ourselves was quite stressful. Also the hotel in Venice had no hot water which had been the case for some weeks. They said they had told all the tour operators but ours had not told us. The hotel offered no refund or gesture to compensate. Ffestiniog did all the booking of flights, trains and hotels very efficiently which was great. It would have taken a lot of time and effort to do that ourselves.

Switzerland’s Lake Lucerne by JC, 20 Jun 2025

Enjoyable holiday in Switzerland

7 day holiday by train to Lake Lucerne. Arrangements worked well although lack of airconditioning in Lucerne was a problem due to hot weather. Day trips from Lucerne were generally excellent.

Everything worked as planned except a couple of programme changes due to local issues. Transport all on time and hotels fine.

He was very knowledgeable about the Heritage Railway we were enjoying and was able to make lots of suggestions of different trips, depending on one's interests. He was also very mindful when it came to possible platform changes during the two days of rail travel to the Harz and two days back. And finally, he was able to deal with excitable members of the group, not to the detriment of the rest of the party.

Rating for tour operator:

Ffestiniog Travel specialise in rail holidays, especially, but not exclusively, heritage railways. They are well organised and efficient.
