new zealand railway travel

From Christchurch to Auckland and all in between, the journey by rail and coach was satisfying. There were several items that needed to be fixed, but the group managed to get through them. Hotels were very good and large, but I could NOT recommend Rydges Hotel in Auckland. All the preserved railways we visited went out of their way to entertain us and provided an excellent atmosphere.

Ffestiniog Travel did a great job, but the company they rely on in New Zealand, could be much better in its accuracy for bookings.

A very well organised tour. High quality hotels. A low-key but effective guide.

A wonderful and memorable way to enjoy the week of my 75th birthday!

"Snow on the Alps" was a 10-day rail-based holiday startgin at London St Pancras, with overnight stays in Cologne, several days each in Chur and Lucenre, and including trips on the Bernina Express and Glacier Express. It was extyremely well organised and the tour leader was excellent.

What I like about Ffestiniog travel is that they combine three things: 1. great efficiency in admin. 2. considerable flexilibyt for each indididual traveller, partly because they give everyone a rail pass - in this case a first class pass valid throughout Switzerland. 3. they have very friendly and knowledgeable tour leaders

Great opportunity to explore Norway and to see the Northern Lights

We had a good group leader, and had the opportunity of exploring Norway by train, ship and coach. Good excursions added value.

Good pre-holiday admin, good holiday briefing documents, and well planned admin arrangements.

10 day escorted railway based holiday in Switzerland. Brilliant experience led by an experienced, knowledgeable and supportive escort who went out of his way to ensure we had a fulfilling experience.

The highlight of the trip for us was the Bernina Express - near perfect conditions for such a beautiful journey with its bridges, spirals and fresh, crisp snow. David, our tour leader, was very friendly and knowledgeable, his interest in the Swiss railways and region was clear to see and we definitely enjoyed and appreciated his enthusiasm. Throughout the tour David made suggestions and recommendations as to things to do and see, really helping us make the most of our rail tour.

Rating for tour operator:

The tour organised by Ffestiniog Travel surpassed our expectations, every aspect of the tour was well planned and organised, with excellent communication from Awel; from the initial enquiry, subsequent booking, receiving the itinerary documents and the holiday itself. We will definitely be recommending Ffestiniog Travel to our friends and family and hope to book another trip soon.

'Snow on the Alps' with Ffestiniog Travel. This was a holiday by Eurostar to Brussels, then to Cologne with overnight stay. Next day to Chur for four nights, then Lucerne for three nights, ending with return by the outward route, again with overnight in Cologne. All travel was very well organised, with seat reservations. where possible. The hotels were located conveniently close to the stations and all were welcoming, clean, comfortable and served very good breakfasts. We chose to go on all the optional excursions organised by tour leader David, as well as the included excursions. All were interesting and well-organised. However, the meal included on Glacier Express tour was somewhat disappointing in quality and the seating for it was very cramped.

Rating for tour operator:

We have travelled with Ffestiniog several times. The holidays have always matched brochure descriptions, booking has always been easy and communications always excellent. The tour leaders have always been friendly and helpful, available when needed, but never intrusive. David Stowell's leadership of 'Snow on the Alps' was brilliant-he could not have been better in any way.
