Everything worked as planned except a couple of programme changes due to local issues. Transport all on time and hotels fine.

We have travelled with Ffestiniog before and been impressed as this time with the tour leader and local guides.

This was a seven day holiday, encompassing two days outward rail travel, three days on the Harzschmalspurbahn and two days homeward rail travel. it was well organised in advance, and the tour guide was excellent. He was very knowledgeable about the Heritage Railway we were enjoying and was able to make lots of suggestions of different trips, depending on one's interests. He was also very mindful when it came to possible platform changes during the two days of rail travel to the Harz and two days back. And finally, he was able to deal with excitable members of the group, not to the detriment of the rest of the party.

The schedule we planned together worked out most of the time. The main problems were a strike on Italian railways which we found a way round and the through sleeper from Istanbul to Bucharest was not due to start until June 12th. This meant we had to use 4 separate trains and hope they all connected up-tricky but apart from one tight connection they worked. Noticeable was the much reduced punctuality of European main line trains compared with previous journeys. This caused much anxiety at Bologna for a lot of people. On the other hand possible snags such as use of buses was not a problem.

Ffestiniog was very helpful and presented us with a workable version of what we asked for, which was quite complicated, yet all the rail reservations worked out. We were impressed with the hotels. All of them were a good standard with the Anatolia in Thessaloniki our favourite for facilities and amenities. The Regie Ottoman in Istanbul was good but a disappointment was the restaurant is only open for dinner from Thursday to Sunday and only serves 5 or 7 course meals! However because of this we discovered the wonderful Orient one at Sirkeci station where Agatha Cristie had dined.
