Switzerland by train - everyone should do it (at least once!)

A two centre trip taking in Chur and Interlaken (for Eiger, Jungfrau etc), with plenty of opportunities to explore the spectacular surroundings by train and on foot

Alpine Holiday with Swiss Narrow-Gauge Railways

Railway based holiday with overnights in Gernamy. 4 days at Chur gave the perfect opportunity to explore all of the Rhaetian Railways and the Engadine. 2 free days based in Interlaken gave the party the opportunity to explore their own interests - my particular interests were well looked after, as I visited transport interests in Bern and Lucerne. Rating for tour operator:

Ffestiniog Travel provided very good information and ticketing. Hotel arrangements worked very well. Tour leader very conscientious, so party's time-keeping was fine. A service disruption on the return journey was handled by close coordination between tour leader and office, responding rapidly to circumstances, and returned the party to London with minimal delay. (I could never have done all this on my own).

We started our trip at St Pancras where we met our tour guide and were given a briefing on what to do, where to meet etc. We travelled from St Pancras to Brussels and then went from Brussels to Cologne. In Cologne we were booked into a hotel for the night. This hotel was in a brilliant location - it was literally on the station so was fantastic for onward travel in the morning and it was next to the famous cathedral in Cologne. We had a brilliant first night at a restaurant on the bank of the Rhine that was recommended by our tour leader. We started our Swiss trip in Chur where we stayed at a beautiful rustic hotel in the old town. This was within easy walking distance of the railway station. The scenery in Switzerland is just stunning and we had 4 fantastic days exploring Chur and the surrounding areas, including a trip on the famous Bernina Express and the Glacier Express. With Ffestiniog Travel, you have freedom to do as you please and you are not tied to the group. This was great as we got off the Bernina Express early and dined at the beautiful station Alp Grum! We then took the train down to Poschiavo, had a coffee at the lovely bar/restaurant next to the station and met the group on the way back. In Interlaken we stayed in the centre of town and travelled around the area for 3 days. The highlight here was an old railway that climbed a very steep mountain up to Schynige platte. The views from here were astounding. The weather was fantastic for the whole trip. The group was a really nice size. The tour leader always made it clear where he recommended for dinner and all the recommendations were excellent. This is the advantage of having knowledgable people leading the tour.

Rating for tour operator:

Booking was hassle free. The staff at Ffestiniog Travel really know what they are doing. The staff are passionate about the holidays and it really shows in the high quality results they provide. Any queries are answered straight away and place any doubts or worries you may have at the back of your mind. The instructions provided are easy to understand and there are great information packs given to each customer. The travel is easy. Your tour leader takes care of any issues you may have along the way. You have freedom with Ffestiniog. Unlike other tour operators, not every single day is booked up and you really feel at ease to do anything you want to on your free days! Even on the booked excursions - for instance the Glacier Express - if you want to cross the country another way, as long as it is fairly feasible and you arrive on the same day, you are good to go! Really friendly tour operator and friendly tour leader.

South India despite the Kerala Flooding disaster

We were at business meetings and a conference when the terrible flooding in Kerala started. We had a planned holiday from there. This had to be changed at very short notice. Ffestiniog Travel's local agent replanned the holiday within 4 hours arranging to evacuate us south as soon as the roads were clear enough. The revised arrangements went very well. Full marks all round.

All very well orgainsed. The local drivers were superb. I've not been to India before, and we felt very safe despite the style of driving in India which is quite different from what I've experienced elsewhere.
