Stunning trek on Offa's Dyke Path with Absolute Escapes

Stunning trek on the border country between Wales and England. Hike was rewarding with awesome scenery and superb Bed and Breakfast lodging. People we met along the route were so fun to visit with, and everyone we met in the villages we passed through were very accommodating and generally interested in our hike.

Absolute Escapes has organized another amazing hike for us. This is our fourth hike in the UK arranged by Absolute Escapes and I highly recommend their treks! We found ourselves going to Wales with Absolute Escapes when ideally we wanted Italy or France, but we wanted something simple and easy for arrangements, and Absolute Escapes was the perfect fit, thus we chose Wales. Sure glad we did, amazing hike. Absolute Escapes is very prompt to respond to my inquiries. I do not think I have ever waited over 24 hours for a response to my email inquiry. The website is very user friendly and informative. The online payment system is excellent and very user friendly. The information packet we receive by mail is excellent with very accurate daily itinerary descriptions. I especially enjoy the information in the packet about our lodging for each evening, history of the inn, innkeeper information, nearby restaurants, etc. The daily tips are awesome, when to pack a lunch or when we can find something on the hike for lunch. I also greatly appreciate the flexibility with Absolute Escapes. We have hiked the world with many tours companies. The typical is they present the dates and we have to make those dates work. With Absolute Escapes, they are more than willing to accommodate my dates exactly … dependent upon lodging availability … which is not in their control. They are also very flexible on changes to the itinerary for an extra day here or there, a 14 day hike versus their listed 12 day hike, etc. Again, they are incredibly flexible, but lodging availability does dictate some of this being out of their control. Also the way Absolute Escapes presents lodging options for cost savings is awesome. We typically choose the higher option and we have been absolutely enamored with each and every lodge we have stayed at. And the innkeepers become friends overnight. If you want a guaranteed awesome hike … book with Absolute Escapes.

Restore and Rest

We wanted to go to the Hebrides. When we connected with Absolute Escapes we found the guidance needed. We started at Glasgow and beginning with Iona went north through much of the Hebrides. Lewis was our ultimate destination. We lived the people, the beauty and the history. Very special places will never be forgotten.

Walking Bonny Scotland

My wife and I had a great trek walking the West Highland Way. We booked up with Absolute Escapes who arranged our accommodation and for our baggage transfer between guesthouses so all we had to do was make our way through the breathtaking scenery of the West Highlands from Milngarvie in the suburbs of Glasgow to Fort William on the edge of Glen Nevis. Where ever we went the locals were welcoming, and the guesthouses we stayed in were excellent with great food and really comfortable. We started walking on my 61st birthday, so had my birthday dinner at the Clachan Inn at Drymen, Scotland's oldest registered in, which made it a bit special. We met some interesting characters walking the way, including a retired judge, a NASA engineer who works on the Space Station and of all things, a German girl travelling the West Highland Way with a full pack riding a unicycle!

Rating for tour operator:

This is our second booking with Absolute Escapes, we walked the Great Glen Way through them last year, and intend to use them to book our accommodation and baggage transfer next year on Offa's Dyke. The accommodation they book is excellent, the information pack they provide is very comprehensive. Response to communication is prompt and so is the follow up at the end of the holiday. They make us feel valued and yet their fees are very reasonable. They also arrange extra nights at the beginning or end as required for us.

Exiting trip through the North of Scotland

We had a wonderful holiday in the North of Scotland indeed. The NC500 is a fantastic route. The exceptional wilderness and beauty of the region has not been exaggerated. The proposed itinerary was very complete and posed no problem what so ever. The accommodations the agency had found for us were great without exception. Their suggestions for eating locations and places to visit were also very useful.

Walking the Cateran Trail

We had an excellent week of walking in a quiet and gorgeous area in Scotland. Perfect weather for walking was a bonus and the views through the impressive glens a reward. Everyone we met along the route was very friendly and helpful. I'm no longer surprised but still get impressed how outstanding the people from Scotland are.

Absolute Escapes arranged all accommodations (very good to excellent hotels & B&B's), bagagetransfers and the occasional transfers from places without accommodation. The itinerary provided in advance was crystal clear and more than complete. Every detail was well described.

Talking, Laughing and Reflecting along the Great Glen Way

I used to believe that so long as I could take a week, or so, each summer to walk, I would be able to come back to myself, and regroup and prepare for another year of life's challenges. I used to believe that so long as I could take a week, or so, each summer to walk, I would be able to come back to myself, and regroup and prepare for another year of life's challenges. Well, between my job and my young family, I let four years go by, and I was desperate for a bit of wandering. I walked the West Highland Way four years ago, and I had my heart set on the Great Glen Way. When I announced that I would walk it this summer, two of my aunts asked to join me (one in her 60s and one in her 50s). I asked my sister-in-law to join us as she's never left Canada before. Finally, a dear friend had recently left a twelve year relationship, and as she had been with me on the West Highland Way, she asked to join this new venture. The walk was wonderful. I love how a walk of this length distills a day's goals and simplifies a day's challenges. I move from days full of "multi-tasking" -- juggling work, family, bills, groceries, appointments -- to days of recognizing that I have to get from point A to point B while trying not to develop a blister, and while aiming to stay dry. Ideally, I will have enough water and and some pleasant things to eat along the way. Simple! Attainable! How pleasant! The Great Glen Way was so incredibly beautiful, and the High Route (optional) is a bit of a physical challenge, but provides views that preclude chatter and simply demand that one stays still, and quiet, and just looks, and looks, and looks. The Great Glen Way provided something different to each member of our walking group. My aunts were so very proud of their achievement in completing the trail. I think my Aunt Tess, in particular, was doubting herself, and yet her radiant smiles at the end of each day spoke volumes about her bourgeoning confidence. My sister-in-law seemed to come into herself on this walk. Typically quiet and reserved, Sherry threw her head back and laughed out loud many a time on this walk. I discovered how witty . . . how downright funny she is, while walking with her. My friend was a month out from the end of her relationship, and the physical reality of walking a trail -- of leaving a place, and then arriving at another -- seemed to mirror the emotional journey that she was on. She was with us as we walked, but also, she seemed to be on her own at times, as she moved and processed and transitioned. I, who had rushed to pack for this walk (leaving Canada on Friday to begin walking on Monday), and who took two days to recognize that I was even on this adventure, was periodically startled and delighted to glimpse the person I was when I had time to daydream and wander and wonder. What relief. And what a gift. Thank you for this opportunity to reflect on one of the great walks of my life. Sincerely, Stephanie Giroux Sudbury, Canada
