Scotland Exploration

Graham was wonderful. He identified all the plants, pointed out birds and other wildlife, and described the history of the ruins and places we visited.

Walking tour of the western islands off the coast of Oban, Scotland

Our walking tour started in Oban, Scotland and included several of the Isles off the western coast; Kerrera, Gigha, Jura, Islay. The islands we saw were remote, some rugged, and all beautiful. Our tour was a mix of walks most with historical sights; all walks replete with beautiful vistas, vast swaths of grass and moss, and flowering plants throughout from Rowan trees to wild foxgloves. Scotland's "free to roam" policy is a pleasure allowing us to walk through fields of sheep and cows, closing and opening gates, providing a feel of openness and great freedom that would otherwise be maneuvers to avoid. The hotels were excellent and the food we had was amazing.

Rating for tour operator:

Wilderness Scotland has many, many strengths from hiring great guides, having well planned tours, but they truly excel in communicating. From the booking process to updating us on the potential for a ferry outage, the organization was always informing, updating, and "moving" us through the process. A credit to a well-trained and knowledgeable team. Back to the guides, our guide was well matched for this trip. A resident of the area she had a depth of knowledge of history and life on the islands that she was able to impart to all guests on her tour. Well done Wilderness Scotland.

Trains, Ferries, and Boots!

I'm not really quite sure how we decided upon Scotland, other than that Edinburgh was more convenient meeting place from Afghanistan, Myanmar, and the United States than Greenland. We wanted to rest our eyes on shades of green, breathe sweet, clear air, and not have the vistas marred by other tourists jostling for an iconic view. In short, our path to Wilderness Scotland, and ultimately to Arisaig and the Isle of Eigg, was not straightforward...

In short, our path to Wilderness Scotland, and ultimately to Arisaig and the Isle of Eigg, was not straightforward. With no preconceived notions of Scotland (although I had attended a Burns Night in Lusaka, Zambia some years ago), we were in the best of positions for any traveler: we could be fully in the moment as we ambled along the 'well trod' path, listening to the sound of the sea and the many birds, watching the sheep graze. Sometimes we remarked upon some particularly interesting aspect of the island's geology, but we generally walked in the companionable silence of long-time friends, who have abandoned the need for pretense in the relationship. Did we make the scramble up to the top An Sgurr? We realized the fine line between bravery and foolhardiness, and decided that the attempt would only detract from our experience. With only two good knees among the three of us, we had learned that lesson. Did that detract from our enjoyment? No. In fact, that decision point will most likely be the memory we share many years hence.

Rating for tour operator:

Wilderness Scotland was outstanding. They responded promptly, their material was accurate, and all arrangements from travel to accommodation were seamless. A most restful break.
