Train is the way to go for a relaxing trip

My wife and I from the States on our first trip to Scotland decided to pass on the group tour and self-drive for a number of reasons...we wanted to go at our own pace but did not want to deal with the whole left side business while at the same time trying to enjoy the countryside and also did not want to be in a bus with a lot of people we did not know. As it turns out we made a great choice both in choosing a train holiday and choosing McKinlay Kidd. Scotland is rich with beautiful landscapes and engaging people so there is no way to take in everything in a week or so but this 9 day train trip does a great job giving showing a sampling of the extraordinary people and places Scotland has to offer. We did a bit of hiking on Skye and in Piclochery, took a tour in both Skye and Inverness and did a bit more hiking in Speen Bridge. Be sure to take advantage of the fine day tours available just about everywhere in Scotland. I'm sure McKinlay Kidd will be happy to help out picking one that is right for you.

Rating for tour operator:

McKinlay Kidd were very well prepared, provided plenty of information...READ IT ALL AS SOON AS YOU GET IT...(I spent a lot of time on the trains wishing I had a map of the route while the map of my wishes was inches away in my backpack in the package on information delivered by McKinlay Kidd but unnoticed by me until I was at home). We had one or two "minor" issues like a rescheduled ferry while we were well into our trip....that could have been a major problem had McKinlay Kidd not picked up on the change, adjusted dependent schedules and sent us notification.

Everything was exactly as advertised!

We took a rail trip through Scotland. McKinlay Kidd booked our train tickets and lodging. The information they sent as well as the packet that was hand-delivered was complete and easily understood. The times on our itinerary were exact and we were met at the stations as indicated and transported to our guest houses. Suggestions were included about what to see at each location as well as recommendations about where to eat, etc. The full ...

Thanks to McKinlay Kidd this truly was one of the best holidays we have ever taken.

First class all the way! When we were in Glasgow we stopped by the McKinlay Kidd offices to thank them personally and were delighted at the warm reception we received! Everyone was helpful, friendly and cheerful. We look forward to travelling with McKinlay Kidd again.

Wonderful train tour of Scotland

I traveled on my own and McKinley Kidd had everything set up to make my travel easy. The places I stayed at were very nice. The travel tips gave me more than enough to do. I had great service and met friendly people everywhere on the trip. It was great to travel in the first class car on the Jacobite Train. Overall, this trip has a lifetime of happy memories.

McKinley Kidd had everything set up for me so that I had nothing to worry about. I am so happy with how it all worked out. I could enjoy the trip without worries about lodging and transportation. The lodging was great and the train/ferry/car trips fun.

When you work with vacation planning experts your holiday will be supurb!

Our Scotland by train adventure was everything we had hoped for. No stress about driving (on the wrong/other side of the road). The legs of the journey were of the perfect duration - we overnighted two nights at every stop meaning that there was no rush and we had time to explore and unwind. The stops chosen for us were highlights - Pitlochery/Inverness/Skye. Our ride on the Jacobite was a sure hit. We never thought we would travel to Scotland ...

The stops chosen for us were highlights - Pitlochery/Inverness/Skye. Our ride on the Jacobite was a sure hit. We never thought we would travel to Scotland (a family wedding changed that) and now we are so glad that we did. Scotland is a beautiful country that abounds in history.

There are not enough superlatives for McKinlay Kidd. The staff know their stuff!! The kind assistance we received with our entire trip (a family wedding prior to the M-K holiday package) not just the train adventure was so appreciated. Attention to detail was very much in evidence as every leg of our journey was well organized - no surprises. Our holiday literature package was a delightful surprise (we'd had an info package prior) as it contained a wealth of brochures/maps not available on line. Although we did a package, this package was tailored and custom fitted for us which made our vacation ours.

An amazing and magical time.

A tour of the Scottish Highlands, excellent from start to finish. A worry free way to holiday, and the best of everything, taking the guess work out of holidaying yet lots of free time to explore and enjoy.

Perfect. Went like clock work. Lovely locations and hotels. Great personal touch.

We'd never been on a package holiday and this one was wonder ful and memorable. The Jacobian Steam Train was memorable. We had been booked a table of our own in first class. Going to the Edradour distillery -as suggested by McKinley Kidd- was another highlight. We also got to stay at Moyness guest house in Inverness with happy, healthy chickens providing the breakfast eggs.

McKinley Kidd were faultless. Everything one could want on a holiday. They also added a welcome personal touch with recommendations ranging from bookshops to restaurants to local attractions. Even which whisky to try.

With just a few ideas from me, Robert created an itinerary that truly made this a trip of a lifetime. The boutique hotels were lovely, and all of the details were handled for us. All we had to do was collect our travel information and rail tickets from our first hotel.

An Outstanding Scotland Holiday

We spent 8 days traveling by rail from Edinburgh to Pitlochry to Inverness to Isle of Skye to Spean Bridge to Glasgow. It was out first time to Scotland and this was a great introduction to the people, landscape, and culture. Our lodging and transportation needs were expertly arranged and, for the most part, went flawlessly (e.g., that British Airways lost my bag inbound and it took 4 days to catch-up with us was no fault of McKinley-Kidd). ...

Our lodging and transportation needs were expertly arranged and, for the most part, went flawlessly (e.g., that British Airways lost my bag inbound and it took 4 days to catch-up with us was no fault of McKinley-Kidd). It tended to rain while we were on the train and largely pleasant when not and we took a pair of excursions -- one arranged by the company -- when we had layovers in Inverness and Portree.

Rating for tour operator:

McKinlay-Kidd is a classy operation! All of our pre-trip needs were handled in a timely fashion, their Vamoos app was quite handy while in-country, and they were responsive to our post-holiday suggestions. We would recommend them to anyone who wanted an introduction to Scotland!

Rail trip of the Scottish highlands and Skye

This was a personalized unescorted rail tour from Edinburgh to Glasgow with stops at Pitlochry, Inverness, Portree (Isle of Skye) and Spean Bridge (Fort William). McKinlay Kidd did an excellent job of selecting accomodations and arranging all the transfers etc. Of the accomadations they chose I would especially recommend Moyness House in Inverness for its host and ...

Rating for tour operator:

McKinlay Kidd were extremely good in arranging a trip tailored to our requirements. They even went out of their way to accomodate the fact that our tour was part of an extended trip including arranging for our train tickets to be delivered to a hotel that they had not arranged for us then following up via email to ensure that we had received everything.

HIGHLANDS CASTLES AND WHISKEY MAKE A GRAND COMBINATION

Seven days traveling by rail around Scotland with no worries because all was planned for us. Everything went by plan. The trains ran on time, the tickets arrived by courier at our first stop, all hotels were beyond expectations, and drivers and day tours were, without exception, well-chosen, knowledgable and kind to us.

McKinley Kidd kept us informed at every stage of planning and provided a thorough set of materials for the trip. Hamish Adamson was our contact at the agency. We had occasion to talk with him on a couple of occasions and he was kind, and helpful and gave us good advice about restaurants and activities.
