Walking in the Ligurian Hills, Italy (The Salt Route)

This was 6 days of walking in the Apennines, on the Salt Route from Montalto Pavese in the high hills to Camogli on the coast, The walking was tough but worth ever step, the views were amazing and the countryside totally unspoiled. We stayed at small hotels/B&Bs where the welcome was always warm and the food lovely and plentiful. We stayed at small hotels/B&Bs where the welcome was always warm and the food lovely and plentiful. It was nice to walk meeting only the very occasional other traveller and we didn't hear another English voice until we reached Camogli. We stayed at a lovely boutique hotel in Camogli for 3 nights after the walk, a fitting reward after a our fantastic walk.

This was our 5th On Foot Holidays walk and we wouldn't go with any other company. They provide assistance in choosing a route and where to stay. They are always available for questions and everyone is so friendly whoever picks up the phone. The pack that is provided for the walk is really excellent, with clear travel information and timetables, the daily walking notes are clear and accurate, so we never go astray (but we do download the gps route that On Foot provide to our phones just in case- a good backup) and additional information is available about the towns/local history in the pack. I would recommend On Foot Holidays to anyone and frequently do. We are already planning our next walk with them.

On Foot Holidays. Our fourth walking holiday with them over the past seven years. Very professional and knowledgeable about their hiking routes.

A demanding and thrilling walk through the solitude of the Appennines

On Foot Holidays booked us a 6 night, 5 day trek south through the Appennines on the "Salt Road" (Via di Sale). We climbed to 1700m with a 360 view over the mountains and the Po valley, and back down to the Mediterranean at Camogli. For the first three days we did not see a single other person, but wildlife and cows galore: the birdsong and the cowbells were the only things interrupting the complete silence. The walking was tough, but rewarding...

The walking was tough, but rewarding. The welcome was warm and the plumbing good in all the places we stayed, even in the most remote parts of the trail. We were glad not to be leading mules laden with salt, though...

On Foot Holidays planned and organised the whole week, including all the incidental transfers. They provided detailed trail guides for every metre of the way. The vagaries of the way marking and the simplicity of the hamlets and villages we passed through meant we sometimes puzzled for a moment or two but we were never lost and the combination of guide, map and GPS meant we were never seriously in danger of straying. The combination of fairly rigorous walking with civilised lodgings and painless baggage transfer (no backpacks!) was ideal.

Amazing Ligurian holiday

This was our second tour with On Foot Holidays, our first being the Amalfi coast. We didn't think it could get better but it did. We hiked with our 16 year old and 23 year old sons, usually 21 km per day of sometimes muddy hiking due to the rains of late but none of it detracting from a fantastic experience with wonderful routes and amazing hosts. Everyone went out of their way for us and we could not have been more thrilled with the experience...

We will never travel with anyone but On Foot Holidays. We love the self guided experience and they are the best. All of the details were managed and the hosts were extraordinary along the way. 5 stars!

Walking across the Appenines

A point to point walking holiday in a generally less visited region of Italy, with baggage transfer, staying in an interesting variety of accommodation.. Excellent support from the travel company and their representatives on the ground. Very good food and wine. Varied scenery and quiet trails.

Our notes for every day guided us on the right route. When in doubt check the notes! Our hosts along the route were all very different and therefore all the more interesting. Anyone going on the same journey, don't be afraid to ask about how things have changed over the last few years. for example, ask about the snow 15 years ago and how it compares to now

Excellent organisation by ON FOOT Holidays

Magical 3 days walking in the Ligurian Appenines down to the sea at Camogli. It was all expertly and brilliantly organised by On Foot Holidays. This is our third trip with them and can not recommend them more highly.

Ligurian Hills, Italy

This is our third On Foot holiday. As always, it was wonderful. We hiked through interesting country (guided by superb On Foot trail descriptions and GPS (Pocket Earth) mapping), stayed at first-rate facilities hosted by lovely people, and had great time, culturally, gastronomically, and hiking-wise.

On Foot has local people who are amazingly helpful. Everything operates smoothly and thoughtfully. Would you believe that, although I had forgotten that it was my 75th birthday, our host and hostess had been informed by On Foot and baked me a beautiful birthday tart! My wife and I am planning on taking an On Foot holiday with our son and daughter-in-law. We can't praise On Foot enough.

Wonderful hiking across the Ligurian Hills

A group of 9 Australian women hiked from Montalto Pavese to Camogli across the Ligurian Hills in May/June of this year. We loved meeting the local Italian people when we arrived at the end of the day, so friendly and welcoming.

The team from ON FOOT HOLIDAYS were fabulous to deal with. We booked our holiday a long time in advance and there were many emails exchanged in the time leading up to departure day. Simon and his team answered every email promptly, politely and nothing was too much trouble. They supplied us with plenty of information about the trip and also supplied us with extra information re train timetables etc, possible excursions, restaurants etc in the places we stayed. Their "on the ground " contacts were fabulous and replied very promptly when we required an urgent pickup of one of our party due to illness. One of our party has used this company many times and recommended them to us. Simon and his team were very professional and extremely friendly & easy to deal with . They also requested feedback which I gave and it was accepted gracefully. We have done many hikes and sometimes feedback is not accepted gracefully, there was no really negative feedback to give as it was such a successful hike . I would have no hesitation in recommending Simon and his team at On Foot Holidays.

On Foot Holidays - Liguria

The route led through some quite rugged areas that challenged our fitness, and on two ridge-climb days we hiked through unseasonable conditions of snow, wind, thunder and bog-like mud, but we never felt out of our league, and the views from the ridge-tops were completely worth it. Each lodging felt personal. In fact, we were the only guests at 4 of the 7 accommodations, so we had an intimate visit with the hosts, who spoke enough English to invite lively, charming conversation. Every evening, we feasted on generous dinners highlighting the specialties of Liguria, including a pesto that we're still talking about. At the end of our triumphant downhill march to charming, seaside Camogli, we stood on the beach and high-fived our accomplishments. It was an immersion into a part of Italy we never would have explored otherwise.

Rating for tour operator:

As we planned the trip, On Foot guided us with utter professionalism, immediately responding to our various questions and concerns and tailoring our trip to specific needs. Before the trip, we benefited greatly from the thoughtful and thorough background information and maps which On Foot provided. The directions, maps and GPS they sent for each route were right on the money, and we felt safe and well cared-for from start to finish.
