One particular description springs to mind after seven nights spent walking in the Ligurian Hills - an immersive experience! This was due to a combination of factors: First, the walking was remote (yet accessible from Milan) - we hardly came across any other walkers - definitely far from the madding crowd. Second, the landscape was varied and changed gradually over the week, from vineyards and rolling hills to steeper climbs (an elevation gain of 1500m on one day in particular) and ridge top walking above the heavily wooded hills with far reaching views, finally descending to the glittering Med at the end - the August heat added an extra layer of challenge to the hill climbing, but luckily wooded pathways were much in evidence. Third, just as varied was the accommodation - each Locanda/small hotel had a distinct character of its own but with a common theme of warm hospitality and fantastic local home cooking, even homemade wine at one remote B&B. The authenticity of the cooking was as much a feature of this holiday as the walking itself! On Foot Holidays like to give their walkers a sense of completing a journey: This was very much in evidence on this holiday.

Excellent service and back-up as always. On Foot Holidays' ethos of great walking and equally great accommodation is a winning combination for me.

Fantastic walking thanks to the amazing On Foot team

On Foot's Ligurian Hills walking holiday was a brilliant experience, featuring the most stunning routes, lovely places to stay and excellent artisanal food cooked by delightful hosts. On Foot deliver a highly personalised service, taking great care to understand our needs and ensure the holiday will meet them, providing helpful transfer information, communicating promptly with the local hosts, and generally offering a first-class service. Their walking routes are very special, in the most beautiful countryside and with interesting and very hospitable overnight stopovers, and they never fail to give us an extremely enjoyable and memorable holiday.

An excellent walking experience!

Walking through the Ligurian Hills to the coast was a fabulous experience. Beautiful weather, changing landscapes, varied vegetation and a range of walking conditions all contributed to a trek that was interesting, frequently spectacular and challenging enough to give us a real sense of achievement. What a beautiful landscape! Accommodation was comfortable, hosts welcoming, food excellent and plentiful.

Lovely Liguria.

A great six day walk across the Apennines from the Po valley to the Ligurian Riviera. Notable for the high, historic paths; the quality of the stopovers - welcome, accommodation, wonderful local food and wine; the wildlife, and the peacefulness. And after several long days on the trot, the luxuries of Camogli, a lovely Riviera town.

Fabulous walking holiday through rural North West Italy (Lombardy/Liguria)

This was our second holiday with On Foot Holidays, and once again, their local knowledge ensured that we had a perfect experience of a beautiful and unspoiled region of Italy. The hosts at each of our stopover destinations were incredibly helpful and the food was outstanding. A perfect way to refuel after a day's walking in the hills.

A life time of memories

We enjoyed every minute of this holiday. The walking was challenging enough to feel a sense of accomplishment and the views each day made the climbs worth it. The accommodations were fabulous and the food outstanding.

Challenging self guided walking holiday

Challenging self guided walking holiday

Rating for tour operator:

They organise and book accommodation along the way often in remote areas, they liaise with a local contact, they organise some of our food including packed lunches, they organise luggage transfer, they provide detailed notes and maps of the route, they provide backup lifts in event of injury or tiredness, they advise on travel to and from start and end points, they provide handbook on culture, history, food and wines of the area - excellent for armchair holidaying before and after actual holiday

Self-Guided Walking in Liguria

In early October, 2024, we walked in Liguria, starting at the village of Montalto Pavese and ending in Camogli on the Mediterranean Sea. In early October, 2024, we walked in Liguria, starting at the village of Montalto Pavese and ending in Camogli on the Mediterranean Sea. This trail followed an ancient salt route, climbing up into the Apennines before ultimately descending to sea level. All of our accommodation, luggage transfers, and evening meals are arranged by On Foot Holidays. This was a challenging walk for us (we are in our 70s), in part because of the roughness of the trail and the amount of hill climbing, but we also ran into several days of rain, wind, and fog. On Foot does offer several route-shortening options, which we took advantage of on the really wet days.

Rating for tour operator:

On Foot Holidays is a pleasure to work with. They are prompt and responsive, with an admirable attention to detail. Their walking packs are customized to one's travel plans, and contain a wealth of supporting information, including restaurant recommendations. I want particularly to mention their maps and walking directions, which are comprehensive and easy to follow. They have also recently developed a companion app that includes daily GPS-enabled topographical maps. This app provides an extra level of assurance that one is on the right track. And one more thing: they have engaged a local representative who is available for advice and assistance. This was especially helpful for us when we decided to take advantage of a couple of the route-shortening options.

We were on a self-guided walking holiday in the Ligurian Hills, Italy. Our tour company made all the arrangements for our accommodation and transport of luggage. They provided paper route instructions, as well as a very good GPS map. All the hosts were welcoming and the food was excellent.
