Rail Tour of Taiwan by Worcester traveller, 12 Nov 2023

Round Taiwan by Train

We spent 16 days touring Taiwan by train and car. 3 days were spent in Taipei and the local area with a couple of tours arranged by the tour operator. We then took a combination of trains and car and driver to travel round the outside of Taiwan, including 3 internal stops for national parks visits.

Eastravel worked with us to tailor make our holiday and were very responsive (within hours), even at the weekend and also listened to our requirements to change certain items when the initial suggestions needed a bit of tweaking. They provided an overview of the hotels that they suggested before we booked to make sure we were happy with them. They kept us informed on the status of all the bookings, even apologising when their team had to be evacuated due to a cyclone and so weren't as responsive as they had been previously. All of the hotels, train tickets and other logistics worked without a hitch and they kept in touch while we were on holiday to ensure we knew the pick up points for shuttle buses. Eastravel also checked in with us once we got back to ensure everything had gone well. The holiday couldn't have gone any better.

More amazing that we could have dreamed!

For our honeymoon we spent 4 nights at The Hari in Wan Chai, Hong Kong, followed by 10 days travelling round Taiwan (2 at the Palais de Chine in Taipei, 2 at The Lalu at Sun Moon Lake, 2 at Alishan Hotel in Alishan and 2 at The Grand Hi-Lai at Kaohsiung), and finally 8 nights in Thailand at a private residence. During our time in Taiwan we had private tours and drivers to take us to various sights and to help us get between various locations (including Taroko Gorge, which was magnificent). This meant we were able to see so much of the country in the time we had there. We had the most magical time, all our hotels were stunning and in great locations for sightseeing or relaxing (The Lalu at Sun Moon Lake was a particular highlight) and the scenery was breath-taking (Sun Moon Lake and everything at Alishan were particularly spectacular). All the staff were so kind to us, especially as it was such a special trip for us. All the organisation that went into this trip was impeccable, we would not have been able to do this without Dorothy's expertise and guidance. It truly made it a trip of a lifetime for us and we loved every second!

Rating for tour operator:

Dorothy, as always, could not have been more helpful at every stage of bringing this trip together. From the early stages when we weren't 100% sure of how we might be able to make it work, to actually helping us with last minute questions about logistics whilst we were away, she was always there to help us. We are so grateful to her for helping us create such a perfect honeymoon for us (and for arranging champagne, balloons and sweet treats for us on our arrival in Hong Kong!)

Taiwan is a beautiful country to visit and the train journeys are spectacular. We are so pleased that you had such a great honeymoon experience. We wish you every happiness. We will be in touch for the anniversary trip next year. ✈

Always a great itinerary

We went to Ecuador and had a seven day varied itinerary. Guides were fantastic, hotels were lovely and the whole thing was organised to perfection. I have been on holiday May times through Eastravel and it’s always been good. Would not hesitate to book again through them.

Fabulous Jordan

We spent 10 days on a self drive trip through Jordan organised by the wonderful East Travel. The itinerary that was put together by Dorothy was excellent providing the perfect balance of sightseeing and relaxation. There was so much to see, but nothing felt rushed and the hotels allocated to us were in perfect position. I cannot speak highly enough about the service provided and the exceptional value for money. A fabulous trip, to a fabulous country...

The hotel setting is beautiful- lush tropical gardens next to a stunning beach. The beach has a number of facilities including loungers and cabanas all served by fantastic staff. The non-motorised water sports were of good quality and something we all enjoyed. With regards to the hotel- it was absolutely fabulous! Definitely one of the best hotels we have ever stayed at and catered to our every need. It was very luxurious without being pretentious. We loved their obvious commitment to social responsibility and the environment and the complete avoidance of single-use plastic was impressive. They also keep ducks, chickens and have a small-holding on site that is a lovely touch. We spoke to a number of staff and they seemed genuinely happy to be working there and that came across in their service. The hotel have a scheme where they employ relatives of retiring current workers which seems to be quite popular and suggested the staff are looked after and happy. The Levels is a slightly more exclusive club you can upgrade to, which was well-worth the extra money, as was the all-inclusive deal. Having signed-up for The Levels we got a private check-in and flexible check-out. The Levels pool was lovely- enjoyed by all of us (age limit >12). It was much quieter than the main pool that was sometimes overcrowded and noisy with activities. Also, the service at The Levels pool was exceptional with the waiters and waitresses seemingly unable to do enough for us. They were so caring and when we weren't there, would look out for the kids and make sure they were well hydrated and fed. They were constantly on hand to order food and drinks and would often offer taster drinks. An additional benefit of The Levels was an extra breakfast restaurant which gave us table service and a more exclusive buffet. We didn't go for the afternoon tea or cocktail drinks as there was just too much else to do! The dinner restaurants (including the buffet) were all of high quality with a varied choice of food and we could have eaten multiple times at each one. The additional facilities (gym, tennis, paddle-tennis, bike hire etc) are all well-maintained and of high quality with staff on hand to help if needed. A huge benefit for all is the departure lounge, which is the first time we have experienced this. Open until late night, it provides an area to relax in, shower and change for guests who have checked-out but have a late flight and want to continue to use the facilities.

Dorothy and East Travel were fantastic. They were recommended to me and I am so glad we I went through them to book our holiday. Dorothy was really knowledgeable and always on hand to offer advice and help. She understood exactly what we wanted from the holiday and what our needs were before advising the best flights and hotels. The communication was clear and concise and covered everything I needed to know and was always on hand to answer queries. When the flight was delayed, resulting in a missed connection, Dorothy contacted us even before the airline to advise about our rearranged flights and gave suggestions about what we can do to fill the time at Singapore Airport- really personalised and attentive service. We will definitely be using East Travel again- thank you!

Dear Hussein, Thank you for taking the time to give us very informative feedback about your holiday to Bali. We are very pleased to know that everything went well and that you enjoyed the unexpected mini tour of Singapore Airport due to the flight delay. I will definitely let the Melia Hotel know about the positive attitude and helpfulness of the staff members. We are ready to help you to plan your next Asian getaway.

We saw leopards and sloth bears in Wilpattu; walked through villages learning about food and agriculture in rural areas; climbed Sigiriya; explored Dambulla caves; walked through the unique Ironwood forest; climbed a rose quartz mountain; saw wild elephants causing a traffic jam; ate rambutan from a roadside stall; travelled by train into the tea country; plucked tea; swam in a waterfall; took a boat ride in Negombo lagoon and saw a swimming monkey. Such precious memories that we have and shared with our 10 year old son. All the hotels were of very good quality, each offering a different experience. We thoroughly enjoyed them all and wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Rating for tour operator:

We couldn't have asked for more from Dorothy at Eastravel. We started this process in 2019 and Dorothy has guided us along the way. She encouraged us to take our time considering all our options. Unfortunately with the Easter bombings and Covid we didn't make it to Sri Lanka until 2023. It was worth the wait! As a couple we had been in 2005 so we had ideas about what we did or didn't want to do. Dorothy was great at accommodating our wishes but also made suggestions that she felt would enhance our holiday, all whilst working within our budget. I wouldn't hesitate to book again with Eastravel and Dorothy.

We joined an organised tour for the DMZ, the only way you can do it. We then got a train and headed south to Andong and spent two nights in a traditional Hanok, the highlight of our trip. We used this as a base to explore Hahoe village and the surrounds. Another train took us south to Gyeongju and a great guide took us out and about, super friendly, we ended up back at her sister's house for tea and a chance to see what life was really like in Korea. Another train took us south to Busan for two nights where another guide took us round the highlights. The last leg was a short flight to Jeju Island where we met the Haenyeo, women divers, many aged over 65 who free dive up to 10m to collect Abalone and other molluscs. Whilst in Gyeongju I had a night at a temple stay, which was interesting as well as fairly physically challenging, but you can opt out of the Sunmudo classes. It was a brilliant trip, we learned a lot from our guides and had done a fair bit of research before we went, absorbing K Culture, particularly film and drama, if not K Pop, which is everywhere. Vibrant, friendly and interesting, would really recommend it.

Rating for tour operator:

Dorothy Heng of Eastravel was brilliant. Although we were largely self guided Dorothy had arranged all the trains, tickets and instructions. It was all meticulous and all the arrangements went like clockwork. When we were met by guides at the station they knew what carriage and seats we were in so could greet us at the doors. Having private guides ensured we could tailor our days out as we liked and could be flexible if we were wanting to spend more, or less, time at any given site. Dorothy and her team have excellent knowledge and really took the time to understand what we wanted when planning the trip, we really couldn't fault it and would very happily use them again.

Many thanks, Andrew and Zelda for your kind words and for allowing us to introduce to you the wonders of South Korea. So much of what we do is for those wonderfully loyal travellers who through decades we have come to know as friends. It's always a special joy to welcome new members to the Eastravel family. We very much look forward to helping you both with your next tailor made experience.
