A bonanza of a wildlife trip in Romania

We had a marvellous experience on our wildlife watching tour in Romania, arranged by Wildlife Trails. We had a marvellous experience on our wildlife watching tour in Romania, arranged by Wildlife Trails. Our long nights on the night-time safaris were well rewarded with an abundance of animals including bears, jackals, fox, deer, wildcat, hedgehogs, hares, door-mice and bats. We will never forget our time in the boat, drifting down the network of channels on the Danube Delta, pitch black with a clear view of the milky way over our heads and the odd falling star. We shared the task of looking for animals through night vision binoculars that detect body heat. The area was teeming with squacco and night herons with the odd kingfisher here and there. WE were delighted to see both a wild cat and a jackal on the banks and also had a brief sighting of a European mink swimming, apparently a rare species in Romania. The guide was incredibly enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Thanks to his expertise we were treated to great views of: the 3-toed and middle-spotted woodpeckers; pigmy, tawny and long-eared owls; forest, edible and hazel door-mice, various species of bats; and chamois. On a personal level, the guide was extremely helpful with tips on photography. We were well looked after and enjoyed our food and accommodation.

Extremely good. Packed loads in. Also see comments above.

Thank you so much for sharing your detailed feedback on what was certainly a 'bonanza' of wildlife sightings, as you travelled through Romania. We are really keen to increase our wildlife destinations 'closer to home' and this very much looks like a winner. We are delighted that you enjoyed the trip and our chosen guide and naturalist was a big hit.

Trip of a lifetime! 🐘🦛🐊🐆🦁🦒

I had never been to Africa before, so I had no idea what to expect. I was hoping for some animals....how many and which ones, I had no idea. This safari did not disappoint! From Day one, I was spellbound. We returned to camp every day, chorusing, "That was amazing!" Every single day, we saw something different, whether it was leopards mating (!), a lion kill, African wild dogs, right down to a tiny little frog. Our guide, Joster, had the knack of pulling something out of his hat every day, and his sense of humour made every day a brilliant day. Our camp crew, Eddie, Bali and Zulu, were the best, keeping us well-fed and safe in our self-contained tents (ensuite - luxury!). Loved every single minute of it!

I had travelled with WildLife Trails once before to India, and loved that they were a small, family business with years of on-the-ground experience. Despite living in Australia and travelling with a UK company, there were no hassles or glitches. Allan rang and emailed me to keep me informed, and very kindly organised the trip dates around my timetable! I knew that he would arrange the best on-the-ground support, and he didn't disappoint with the choice of Unlimited Safari, and then OddBalls camp as an add-on trip. For small group, well planned specialist holidays, WildLife Trails are perfect....I am already thinking about my next trip with them 😊. Couldnt recommend highly enough

Wow, this is such amazing feedback Linda and thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to leave such a detailed report - it really helps us understand how our trips are doing. This particular tour is one of our favourites and from a wildlife viewing perspective, superb camp logisitcs and quality of guides, it is right up there with the best.

So lovely spending time with you both and for sure the female rhino and her small baby was a bonus in Nairobi NP. Having missed out on seeing the black panther with Wildlife Trails in India, it was special to be with you when we all enjoyed those epic multiple encounters with Giza.

We visited three national parks in southern Tanzania Selous, Mikumi and Ruaha. We spent some time travelling from park to park which gave us an insight into everyday life in Tanzania as we passed through bustling towns and villages full of colour and activity. The parks were very different in nature and provided us incredible wildlife viewing opportunities. Overall the itinerary worked very well for us. The balance of time spent in each place was about right, we had time to rest when needed and spent as much time as we could on game drives. The vehicles used to transport us to and from the airports were comfortable and air conditioned. Our safari vehicle was suitable for our needs as it was rugged enough to go off road and comfortable enough for us to cope with the bumpy unpaved roads. Our accommodation was excellent. We stayed in three very different lodges and camps and all had helpful, friendly staff. The rooms we were allocated were very spacious with large comfortable beds, bathrooms with good showers and plenty of hot water. In the most part the food we had was very good with varied menus and generous portions. Sometimes packed lunches were a little uninspiring but adequate nevertheless. On safari holidays the quality of the driver and guide is crucial. As always Wildlife Trails supplied an excellent guide, Patrick, who was a very able driver both on and off road. His knowledge of each of the three parks, the wildlife and where to find it was extensive. He was helpful, friendly, funny and gave us a good insight into Tanzania and its people. Patrick made our holiday, never giving up searching for that final elusive animal that we were hoping to see.

Wildlife Trails tailor made our holiday for us. They asked us what type of holiday we wanted listened to our needs and designed the trip that delivered on everything we asked for. Nothing is too much trouble, we had to make some changes in our schedule and this was managed without question.

Wildlife Trails responded to this review on 02 Sep 2023:

Beautiful clients who have travelled with is many, many times and who had a rocky road before this well deserved 'delayed' safari holiday. We are so happy that on finally realising your trip to southern Tanzania that it exceeded your expectations. Great thanks must also be awarded to our trusted local agents who found such a good guide at the last minute due to another guide falling ill. I look forward to having a chat with you when I get back from Africa myself.

We know what a magical wildlife destination Alaska can be for our clients, especially if the weather 'plays ball'. So, we are so happy that you enjoyed both amazing weather and stunning wildlife encounters for this very special bespoke bear safari to Katmai national park and Kodiak. All the best from the Wildlife Trails team and hope to see you again soon!

The holiday (Around Spitsbergen - In the realm of Polar Bear & Ice) was operated by Oceanwide Expeditions and recommended by, booked through and customised by Wildlife Trails. All the arrangements worked perfectly. Oceanwide’s organisation was amazing and they are very well set up for wildlife lovers and photographers, frequently launching the Zodiacs for wildlife sightings whenever weather conditions allowed. Our twin window, two person cabin was very comfortable and cleaned daily. One night stopovers at Oslo Airport and Longyearbyen worked well and the hotels were well chosen and very convenient. The expedition guides were friendly, approachable and knowledgeable and they always tried hard to satisfy client aspirations, in our case to provide the best photographic opportunities. We were fortunate to see four polar bears and the scenery was even more spectacular than we had imagined. In spite of some prior misgivings, my wife enjoyed the holiday very much; nine nights was the perfect length of cruise for us.

Rating for tour operator:

Wildlife Trails is a small family firm that specialises in tailor-made wildlife holidays. We had travelled with them on three previous bespoke safaris to some of the world’s best wildlife watching countries. Their description of this holiday as an Arctic Cruise for those looking to maximise their encounters with polar bears, but also to keep an eye on the budget summed it up perfectly

Wildlife Trails responded to this review on 24 Jul 2023:

We are so delighted that despite some concerns if the cruise would be a good option for both of you travelling. that it exceeded your expectations and you enjoyed the experience so much that you are considering a return - surely the best feedback you can receive!
