Offering affordable luxury for all budgets, South Africa is a vast country with some of the best wildlife viewing on the planet. Although everyone speaks English, this is a truly multicultural nation with eleven official languages and as many ethnicities. Add to that an advanced infrastructure, a wine sophistication that has its origins in France, plus a favourable rate of exchange and you have the ingredients for the journey of a lifetime.
So many scenes of my first visit to the Kruger Park have been embossed in my mind: the hyenas appearing suddenly alongside our jeep; a baboon fight between two troops; the three lions lying majestically in the shadow of an acacia; the mute uneasiness of the herd of buffaloes we found ourselves in; the trumpeted warning of an elephant mother protecting her baby; the skittish grace of the antelopes. You simply can’t beat a safari for thrills.
