Holidays to Jordan

Were Jordan to be captured in a single image, it would be Al-Khazneh, the iconic treasury building in the Nabatean city of Petra, carved from its sandstone rock-face, but to view it as the total of all the country’s offerings would be a huge oversight. An oasis of calm in the troubled context of the Middle East, Jordan thrills visitors on the banks of the Dead Sea, in the Red Sea resort town of Aqaba and in its capital Amman, where Al-Rainbow Street is alive with bars and restaurants.

Must see: Thirty miles north of Amman, Jerash is one of the best-preserved Roman sites in the Middle East – and arguably the most accessible in an era when Baalbek (Lebanon), Palmyra (Syria) and Leptis Magna (Libya) are off-limits. I recall sitting on the top tier of its giant amphitheatre on a cool January day, imagining second century ghosts at my side.
