Petra & the Treasures of Jordan by Flo-jo, 15 Apr 2014

Jordan; a fascinating and interesting country - excellent guides, hotels and good company within group of fellow travellers

This was my first visit to the Middle East. Jordan has a lot to offer in terms of history, religion and its surprisingly varied terrain; I did not appreciate beforehand just how mountainous a country it is. We travelled from the north to the south of the country taking in,for example, Roman settlements, Deserts and desert life, the Dead Sea and Petra. We saw places such as the River Jordan, Sea of Galilee, Mount Nebo whose names we have known about since childhood. Also we gained some understanding of current issues which affect the Jordanian people such as the pressure caused by refugees, shortage of water to name but two. The hotels we stayed in offered high standards of accommodation and food.

Rating for tour operator:

Very efficient, pleasant and helpful. One senses that a lot of research and preparation is put into all aspects of every holiday. The itinerary [a summary is provided for each day] is well thought through so that sufficient time is given to visits for each day, without one feeling at the end of the day either rushed or exhausted. As a solo traveller I welcome eating with the group each day, normally either Lunch or Dinner. Not only is this nice socially, but once again a lot of thought and planning has gone into selecting restaurants. The hotels chosen for each stay are of a high standard in all respects.

Experiencing history and discovering a country not previously visited.

Our local guide had an amazing ability to recall facts and figures and breathe life into them, Our visits were carefully planned to show modern Amman and the ancient citadel, desert palaces, early Roman settlements, views towards the Golan Heights and the Sea of Galilee, and the Roman City of Jerash. Petra cast its magic, as did Wadi Rum with thoughts of Lawrence of Arabia. Our final destination was the Dead Sea which has to be experienced to judge its impact. From there we were privileged to stand where Moses saw the Promised Land and the River Jordan where Christ was baptised.

A specialist view of Rome

I often organise special visits both abroad and in the UK for groups of rriends or my NADFAS society members and with some private contacts in Rome wanted to put together such a visit, with the particular aim to visit private residences not normally open to the public. With the help of Ciceroni (see below) we had a splendid 4 nights in Rome, visitng said private or government owned buildings in addition to the Vatican City and Gardens, Galleria Borghese, the church of San Luigi dei Francesi to see Caravaggio's St. Matthew cycle and the central sights of the historical centre of Rome. This to attempt to emulate the 19th century "Grand Tourist" in a very minor way.

I knew of Ciceroni Travel through NADTFAS lecturer Tom Duncan and various reports I had heard of their specialised visits. I had initially contacted someone in Rome whom I knew led guided walks in the city and during the course of various discussions with him of the private visits I wished to organise he suggested we could package the whole trip through Ciceroni, for whom he often worked as a Tour Director. Both this person and Ciceroni proved extremely efficient and helpful, happy to follow my requests and coming up with their own excellent suggestions. They put together a superb programme and in the individual's case, led an extremely popular visit. We will use them again.

We visited 3 of their palaces, for the most part 18th century; a couple of art galleries founded by them, containing world famous paintings and sculptures; ; and 3 churches in the old city. We were extremely comfortably and conveniently accommodated ;we enjoyed 3 group meals of the highest standard; and for those who wished tickets were obtained for operas and ballet.

Rating for tour operator:

The tour was organised and led by Tom Duncan who runs Cicceroni. He is extremely well informed; a wonderful lecturer; and a disarming and pleasant companion. He copes with set-backs - e.g. inconvenient organ practice in the cathedral - with aplomb and the agents he uses never seem to let him down, in matters such as punctuality, helpfulness etc.

An excellent introduction to the wealth of art and culture in Rome ands the Vatican

Excellent Ciceroni guide. Pleasant hotel. Well paced programme. Good travel arrangements. Some venues unavoidably packed, but programme included several visits to private houses or galleries where we were treated like special guests. We were given an unique introduction to renaissance art and culture

Informative

Travelled with a group from NDFAS. We found everything had been extremely well organised for us, even printing our boarding passes. Our guides were extremely well informed, and were courteous and thoughtful. Our hotel was very friendly and helpful in a very good location. We went to several places which were organised as a private visit, which was a bonus. We all had an excellent time, and certainly packed in a huge amount of sight seeing ...
