Based in a beautiful hotel in Bath with daily excursions to archaeological sites, magnificent cathedrals, Roman baths & villas, Stonehenge at dawn from the inner sanctum, Avebury circles, etc. All the while being escorted by Paul Beston whose knowledge of each site seemed endless.

Peter Sommer Travels offer a unique holiday experience, blending historical sites with expert guides, great food and accommodation all the while in a friendly and welcoming manner and catering for the guests special needs.

Exploring Wessex was very interesting, our Tour guide Paul was a walking encyclopedia on the area, making the trip well organized and very enjoyable, really enjoyed being on the inside of Stonehenge, something I have always wanted to do, the hotel chosen for us was delightful with beautiful breakfasts every day, Bath was amazing, such a lot of history

Visited archaeological and historical sites in the southwest of England, ranging from the Neolithic to the 18th century.

The guides, Paul and Michael, were knowledgeable, informative, and fun. The trip was structured so that each day built on the last, providing an excellent context for the history and prehistory. They made sure to point out things that appealed to the particular interests of members of the party.

We enjoyed each day of the tour of Wessex, exploring amazing sites covering the history of England from the neolithic to the present day. Highlights for me were the visits to Stonehenge at sunrise, and the amazing Roman villa at Chedworth. The sequence of sites built a narrative ably illuminated by Paul and Michael, their depth and breadth of knowledge was impressive. They also were both entertaining speakers and great to talk to throughout the trip. Every day we had gourmet lunches at pubs where the beer and the food were top notch. All of the restaurants for the evenings where the group dined together were well chosen. The hotels were comfortable and well run, with very nice breakfasts every day. All of our site visits went off without a hitch and we were never left waiting at any time. It was very relaxing to be so well taken care of. We're thinking of doing another tour with these folks of Hadrian's Wall in the future.

This is our second trip with Peter Sommer Travels and they always do a very professional and careful job in creating and leading their tours. They also put a lot of thought into the structure and content of the tours so that each step along the way is integrated into a narrative. The staff at Peter Sommer have clearly been chosen with care, everyone is very smart, funny, caring and professional. They are experts at logistics, they make you feel like you are cared for and you never feel any indecision or chaotic behavior from them. They deliver an excellent small group tour experience.

The Exploring Wessex tour put on by Peter Sommers Travels was amazingly well organized and well executed. My wife and I had a wonderful time visiting sites from the whole breath of English history. The tour operators went out of their way to make our tour pleasurable, dealing with all the hassles of travel so that we could focus on the experience itself.

Our tour operators, Paul and Michael, were tremendous. They did everything they could to make our week-long tour enjoyable.

This tour (Exploring Wessex) has it all, excellent food, comfortable hotels, lovely scenery and extraordinary prehistoric and historic sites. Our expert tour leaders, Michael Metcalfe and Paul Beston, took us on a fascinating journey from the Neolithic to the 18th century with a great depth of knowledge and an equal amount of good humour. My husband and I enjoyed their company immensely. We highly recommend this very well-organized, well-paced and informative tour.

Exploring Wessex was the second tour my husband and I have taken with Peter Sommer Travels (the first to Crete in 2016)and both surpassed all our expectations. The tours were exceptionally well-organized, with excellent food and accommodations, and the most knowledgeable and personable tour leaders we have met in many years of travel. All members of Peter Sommer Travels from the office staff to the tour leaders went out of their way to ensure we had an unforgettable experience. They made us feel like welcome guests, not just clients. We highly recommend this company.

The only thing that exceeded the depth of knowledge imparted to me on this tour was the depth of ignorance that I possessed prior to it. I cannot compliment PSTours enough on a well-planned itinerary and on the expertise of the two tour leaders, Paul Beston and Michael Metcalfe. The accommodations, the dining and the drinking experiences were superb and the choice of the historical and cultural venues was excellent. Both Paul and Michael excelled at elucidating the history of the Wessex region and made the learning experience both enriching and entertaining. Enjoyed every minute.

This is our second PSTour (first one was to Crete). Both tours have been excellent. PS tour leaders are not only experts in their academic fields but are also masters at making the tours work smoothly and efficiently. The itineraries are excellent, both in terms of venues and in terms of the pace of the tour. The choices of accommodations and the dining locales never disappoint. My wife and I have done many tours with a variety of tour companies. PSTours is definitely the best.

Exploring Wessex was one of the best holiday tours I've ever been on. From picking me up at the train station to begin the tour, even though my original train was cancelled, to getting me to the airport at the end, Exploring Wessex was extremely well organized. Hotel accommodations were arranged and ready for us, with no hassle whatsoever. The daily site tours were definitely the highlights of the tour. Each day was something new and wonderful. The absolute highlight was being able to explore Stonehenge in the evening. The small tour group allowed us access to places larger group wouldn't be able to go. Meal arrangements were well planned and delicious. I didn't have a bad meal anywhere. Our tour leaders, Paul and Michael, were excellent guides. Their Wessex knowledge was impressive. Michael kept us on schedule, so that we didn't miss out on anything. I highly recommend Exploring Wessex to anyone who is interested in English history or if you are just looking for a wonderful holiday tour. Peter Sommer Travels is the way to go.

Peter Sommer Travels is such an easy company to work with. As I was planning my Exploring Wessex tour, they were available to answer any questions I had. Julie was a great help in getting my train connections sorted out. Even though my original train was cancelled, which made me arrive in Bath later, Paul was there to pick me up. The Peter Sommer Travels Wessex tour covered an area west of London that includes the cities of Salisbury and Bath. The primary focus of this tour was the area’s historic locations that helped define English history, from the Neolithic to the Georgian eras. Sites visited included Avebury, Stonehenge, Sarum and Bath. We especially enjoyed the small group format which makes it easy to interact with both other participants and the guides. High points of the tour were the unforgettable sunset access to the inner circle at Stonehenge and the excellence of our two guides.

The Wessex tour was our first experience with Peter Sommer Travels, plus it was their initial tour to this area. Amazingly, we perceived no “first time” issues, indicating the care with which the company researched the historic sites, the hotels, the transportation and the restaurants. We are pleased to give the company an unqualified "excellent" rating in all aspects, from initial contact, to booking, and finally, to the superb planning and site selection by the tour organizers.
