Naar to Upper Mustang - remote trekking in Nepal at its best.
We immediately left the hustle and bustle of the Annapurna Circuit behind and trekked through a beautiful, forest sided river valley towards the remote and atmospheric village of Naar. We immediately left the hustle and bustle of the Annapurna Circuit behind and trekked through a beautiful, forest sided river valley towards the remote and atmospheric village of Naar. At 4100m, Naar sits above the tree line in an open valley with a semi circle of traditional, flat roofed, stone buildings sandwiched together overlooking terraced fields and all surrounded by snow dusted mountains. From Naar the trek took us up even more remote valleys aiming for the 5595m high Teri La pass leading towards Mustang. After leaving Naar we only saw 3 other trekkers before we dropped down into Mustang. This section offered wonderful walking on narrow, undulating paths surrounded by amazing views of multi coloured, snow capped mountains. The scenery on reaching Mustang was different, but no less impressive, with a high arid plateau cut through by river valleys - resulting in almost vertical fluted edges, which from a distance appeared impregnatable. We visited three villages of interesting but differing character en-route to our destination of Lo Manthang, climbing up and over the plateau each time. Some snow towards the end of the trip changed the views from yellow hues to white but they were still of equal beauty. Overall a fantastic camping trip which takes you away from the beaten track and into areas seldom visited by people other than the local Yak herders.

This was our first trek with The Mountain Company and we were very impressed with the overall organisation and range of trips offered. The pre trip information is comprehensive and Rolland was quick to answer any additional questions we had. We very much appreciated the hard work of our trekking crew and the excellent way they looked after us. Rolland's monitoring of the weather forecast and regular communication with our local guide meant that they were able to agree necessary, weather enforced, changes to our travel arrangements towards the end of the trip. We will certainly look at travelling with The Mountain Company again.

A great trip with The Mountain Company, trekking from Naar to Upper Mustang.
The trekking route from Naar to Upper Mustang is very interesting, across a varied and remote mountain landscape. Fascinating villages and few other trekkers.

Fantastic service from the very beginning to the end. Amazingly prompt responses by email during my preparation and a very helpful dossier which covers every conceivable detail. The best food I have ever had on a camping trek. Very attentive service during the trek with alot of effort to continually tune the daily details to maximize our experience.

Naar to Upper Mustang 2018
This camping trek is a stunning trek through the different landscapes of Nepal. It really is a trek that keeps on giving. Many treks can lose interest after the high pass crossing however with this trek the interest stayed right until the final day walking - significant scenery and cultural changes every few days: deep river gorges, then glacial valleys, the wind eroded and arid landscapes of Mustang, then views of big mountains, and the ...

We have travelled on a number of occasions with the Mountain Company and even as they have grown the personal level of service and the attention to detail has been maintained.

Challenging but amazing trek from Naar to Upper Mustang
This was a challenging trek with lots of ups and downs and a few long days. However, it is worth the physical challenge. Got to meet local villagers and learned about their way of life. The colour and stratification of the mountains and rock formation in the Mustang region are just amazing and very unique.

The Mountain Company (TMC) is a first-class tour operator. This is my second trek with them. There are three main factors that are important to me when I am selecting a trekking tour operator and they are: 1) safety, 2) environmentally friendly, and 3) ethical treatment of trekking crew. TMC ensures safety of its clients by having a guide at the front and one bringing up the rear. This is important to me as I am slow on descend. During the many descends, a crew member was always there to lend a hand and I never felt pressured to keep up with others. TMC participates in a project called PROTECT … People/ Resources/ Outreach/ Tourism/Environment/ Conservation/ Tomorrow. This project promotes sustainable tourism and help clean up the garbage found on trails in the Himalaya and Karakoram mountains. TMC encourages its crew and clients to pick up garbage during the trek. We did and felt great to be able to help. Though what we did maybe insignificant, but every little bit helps. I believe in the long run that this will help bring awareness and change the behaviour of those using the trails. I am very pleased that TMC takes on this project. Ethical treatment of the crew involves TMC enforcing weight limit of how much the crew carries. As well, the English guides on the treks are monitoring the well-being of the crew. I witnessed this first-hand on the Naar to Upper Mustang trek. Our English guide, Ade Summers, changed the itinerary to allow time for the crew to rest and hired horses when down on lower elevation to help out. A young crew member was not feeling well, he ensured the young man rested and provided the necessary medical treatment. My entire experience from start to finish have been a positive one. Roland Hunter, owner of TMC, was very helpful and responsive. He provided all the necessary information and answers all inquiries on a timely manner. He is hands-on managing the treks and ensures all the details are looked after. He is also very proactive in accepting feedbacks at the end of the treks from his guides and clients, and make the necessary changes if required.
