Best of Japan on Foot Overview

Cultural discovery and on foot adventures in Japan, the Land of the Rising Sun

On this walking and cultural holiday we invite you to experience all the spiritual and earthly highlights of Japan: its remarkable landscapes, ancient traditions, modern cities, and exquisite food. We first visit Hiroshima, where we can take time to reflect at the poignant Peace Park and visit the shrines of sacred Miyajima Island. At atmospheric Koya-san, the headquarters of Shingon Buddhism, we’ll sleep in temple lodgings, dine on traditional Buddhist cuisine, and wake early to join the monks for morning prayer. We’ve then allowed 2 nights in Kyoto to explore the temples and zen gardens; meet the kimono-clad Geishas of the Gion District, and enjoy a traditional ‘kaiseki-ryōri’ multicourse feast. Journeying north, we hit the trails walking part of the Nakasendo Way between the exquisitely preserved villages of Magome and Tsumago. Following this ancient trading route, once used by merchants and samurai, is a fantastic way to experience rural Japan. Then, at stunning Kamichochi, we’ll walk alongside the tranquil Azusa River, through forests of willow and larch, towards the high snow-capped mountains of the Japanese Alps. We end the holiday with 3 nights in the neon-lit metropolis of Tokyo, including a day trip the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, for views of iconic Mt Fuji, and a full day to explore both ancient and modern Tokyo with our Tour Leader. This holiday is thrilling and fast paced – just like Tokyo! By utilising the country's excellent public transport throughout, including the world famous high speed bullet train, you'll get to experience Japan just like the locals.
