Silk Road to Samarkand
Silk Road to Samarkand OverviewA kaleidoscope of cultures, landscapes and architecture in one superb Silk Road tour.
The Great Silk Road has a past filled with fearless warriors, pioneering explorers and, of course, the enterprising traders who travelled in long caravans across deserts, mountains and steppes. On our tours, Silk Road history is revealed in fascinating splendor. From the shores of the ancient Oxus River to centuries-old mosques, Uzbekistan is steeped in the history of the Silk Road; tours with Mountain Kingdoms give you the opportunity to experience it all.
Our Silk Road tours focus on three of the Great Silk Road’s most impressive cities, where trade in spices, gems and porcelain gave rise to great local powers. We depart from Tashkent, from where we fly west and travel to Khiva, the first major stop on our tours. Silk Road wealth bestowed upon this city a treasure trove of ancient buildings, including the World Heritage site of Ichan-Kala, as well as numerous mosques and mausoleums.
Heading south across the Kyzyl Kum desert, we spend time in Bukhara, where we’ll walk in the covered bazaars and see the colossal Kalyan Minaret. Finally our Silk Road tours reach Samarkand, once a simple oasis but now filled with magnificent blue domed mosques, ornately decorated madrasas and fascinating collections of ancient treasures. Throughout, the beautiful landscape and welcoming people enliven our experiences. With our tours, Silk Road history is not confined to the past.
