A wonderful week spent walking sections of Hadrian's Wall learning about it's construction, occupation, and reincarnation into other local buildings. The tour is led by an experienced archaeologist and the group is the perfect size to have in-depth technical discussions with the tour guide and other members regarding the archaeology, history, and geology of the Wall features. A physical workout for the legs, a mental workout for the brain, and a vacation for the soul.

No worries about where to park the car, where to get a hotel, or navigating confusing road directions. The only worries were keeping my phone charged to take amazing photos and not wanting to go back home. If you are not having fun on a tour, it is because you are not on a Peter Sommer tour!

It was everything I desired: intense history and hiking in a very spartan part of the world.

Originally, we were going on a gulet cruise in the Aegean, but due to Covid we decided to change to a UK based tour. Looking at the tours on offer, I saw that I had been to most places and this made the choice difficult. I chose the Hadrian’s Wall one, as there were some places that I had not been to before. As a professional archaeologist, I had studied the Wall at university, walked it twice and been to several Wall conferences, so I did not think I would learn much from the tour. I was wrong. Much has changed in Wall studies over the past few years and our guide, Paul Beston, bought us up to date with the latest thinking and research, and showed us aspects of the Wall that I and most people miss. The other thing that attracted me to this tour was the prospect of walking sections of the Wall itself. I was somewhat concerned, however, that we would be bused from site to site and from one section of Wall to another, with only a little walking. I need not have worried. We walked for miles along the Wall, with Paul pointing out all the details of the Wall and Vallum, their construction, alterations, history and location etc. The views from many of the sections we visited were stunning. Paul not only explained the history of the Wall itself, but also of the post Wall period with the reivers and romantics and how the wall survived or didn't.

Normally,I avoid guided tours as many of the tour guides are useless in my opinion, with little knowledge of the particular subject of the tour. Not with Peter Sommer Travels. This is the second tour I have been on and his guides are experts in their particular fields and had a broad scope and depth of the subject of the tour. The tours are well organised and everything is provided and you wanted for nothing. All we had to do was eat, walk and sleep. The hotel we stayed at and the various restaurants we visited were excellent. With Peter Sommer Travels you actually get out and about, see and meet other people, rather than just being in a tour bubble.

We spent a week walking sections of Hadrian's Wall, pausing at sites to hear them and the history come alive from our guides, both obviously expert and passionate about the history and archaeology of the area. One of us, a retired archaeologist, had walked the whole wall before, so he was looking forward mainly to the landscape and exercise, but he found there was a surprising amount he had passed by before. At lunch and in the evening, we were booked into a variety of excellent pubs and restaurants, and the hotel was lovely, unique, set in lovely peaceful grounds. Altogether a great holiday

We discovered Peter Sommer tours as we heard one of their guides taking a party around the palace of Knossos in Crete. He was giving the best tour we'd ever seen (and we've seen and given a few). We found out that he was working for Peter Sommer and the next year we booked ourselves onto a walking and sailing holiday and found it even better than we'd hoped for.

I've always wanted to learn more about Hadrian's Wall and this is a fantastic way to do that. I learned so much and our tour guide was simply excellent - giving us both sides of disputed issues, and other (non-Roman) history of the area, which was excellent too. He really brought the history of the Wall to life! And walking it is a lovely way to achieve that.

I was nervous about my first ever walking holiday but needn't have been. The trips were manageable with lots of breaks whilst we heard about the history of the places we stopped. Our guide shared his knowledge is an amusing way which made it much more interesting. We walked through some amazing scenery and saw some wonderful sites.

We were sent all the information we needed before the trip and any questions were answered very quickly. We had complete confidence in them.
