31 Jul 2019 - KE Adventure Travel is thrilled to be launching new exciting trips in Japan, Finland and Quebec, where the snow transforms the summer landscapes and brings with it a whole new set of unique adventures
Winter in Hokkaido – Japan’s Frozen North
With the Olympics only one year away, Japan is firmly on the map and KE is very excited to announce the launch of a brand new unique to KE holiday showcasing Japan’s wildest island, Hokkaido. The most northerly of the Japanese archipelago, it sits in the Sea of Okhotsk off the coast of Siberia. It is a land of volcanic peaks, frozen lakes and hot springs - Japanese onsen - and the Ainu, indigenous residents who worship the spirit of natural things.
On this holiday you’ll snowshoe on frozen oceans where Ezo red foxes contrast against the snow, and on packed drift ice from Siberia, where Steller’s Sea Eagles gather. Each experience is steeped in exquisite Japanese culture – enjoy traditional kayseki dinners and picnic bento boxes, and attend the Drift Ice Festival, where locals celebrate the ice floes which arrive each year.
10 days, Grade 2, from £2,495 land only, £3,295 inc. flights from London to Sapporo with BA
Settle into timber built lodges in the Canadian wilderness and tackle a full-day guided snowmobile trip, an after-dark dog sled with a local musher and an evening torch-lit snowshoe. A traditional winter survival course teaches skills such as ice-fishing, making fire on snow, and building a quinze – a Quebec igloo. Back in Quebec City; finish your adventure with a stay in a local First Nations’ hotel.
8 days, Grade 2, from £1,495 land only, £2,215 inc. flights from London to Montreal with Air Canada.
Get off-the-beaten-track on this snowshoe adventure through the largest wilderness in Europe along the Russian border, with a three-day trek from cabin to cabin. This adventure is remote and snowbound, so there’s no electricity, just atmospheric candlelight and wood-fired saunas. Go local and try ice-swimming or take a wild roll in the snow, and visit Sami reindeer herders and 4000 year-old shamanist rock paintings.
This holiday is a great introduction to snowshoeing and an ideal alternative winter getaway.
7 days, Grade 4, from £945 land only, £1,235 inc. flights from London to Kuusamo with Finnair.
This winter activity holiday offers a true taste of winter, right in the heart of East Finland’s frozen wonderland. Try your hand at ice-fishing, fire lighting and igloo building, plus cross-country ski through the Taiga forest looking for Reindeer. Enjoy an exciting overnight snowshoeing expedition deep in the wilderness and stay in a remote cabin. A key highlight of this trip, along with the wood fired saunas, is the day you spend at the husky farm getting to know your team of husky dogs before heading off driving your own sleds through the crisp-white forests and frozen snow-covered lakes.
8 days, Grade 3, from £1,495 land only, £1,785 inc. flights from London to Kuusamo with Finnair.
