Backroads of Laos

Backroads of Laos Overview

This holiday gets you well off the beaten track for an incredible insight into Laotian life. From meeting ethnic minority villages, to discovering cave networks dug during the Vietnam War, to seeing the stunning natural vistas - there is so much to see and do away from other tourists. We can tailormake your holiday to make sure it suits you.

This itinerary combines the main cultural sites of Laos with off the beaten track experiences. Starting in the capital, explore the country's exciting food markets with an array of delicious dishes you can try. You can also combine a visit to the city's COPE exhibition centre that tells the story of the Vietnam War's impact on the country. Later travel by boat to visit the stunning Kor Long Caves, at over 7 kilometers in length they are a sight to behold.

Get off the beaten track and visit a 'bomb boat village' on the way up to the Plain of Jars. These villages have converted fuel tanks from the Vietnam War into boats for transport and fishing. On arriving at the plain of jars, have a guided tour about the history of this natural wonder - a megalithic archaeological site containing thousand of stone jars on the Xieng Khouang plateau. Take in the wildlife and array of bird species in the Nam Et National Park and later make your way down to the UNESCO Heritage Luang Prabang.
