Good to be travelling again

After nearly 3 years of not travelling due to covid it was fantastic to be travelling again. We had heard lots about Colombia and it's checkered past but also how much it has changed and so we decided to see for ourselves. We visited Bogota, Villa de Leyva, Medellin and Cartagena to see some different areas, cuisines and cultures and Colombia didn't disappoint.

Rating for tour operator:

We had travelled with Distinctive Americas before so it was the obvious choice for this trip to Colombia. Distinctive Americas treat you as an individual, this is a tour operator who offer you a tailor made experience to meet all your requirements. They take your enquiry then connect you to the best person in their team who have been to the country you want to visit. This means that you can discuss your destination with someone who has actually travelled there and knows the areas, hotels and trips on offer first hand. This meant that we got to have an itinerary unique to us. They talked to us about our expectations of Colombia, the type & amount of activities we like, and then offered us a choice of hotels, activities, trips and suggested places to visit. They then worked with us swapping things around until we had the perfect personal itinerary for us. Distinctive Americas work with local agents in each of the areas we visited so we got the best out of our time there, with very knowledgeable guides and drivers. Throughout our trip an in-country rep was overseeing our trip and we could contact them if we had any issues. Distinctive Americas were also just an email away if needed. We got a detailed itinerary from Distinctive Americas before travelling and everything ran like clockwork.....meaning we got our dream holiday.

Fantastic in every aspect. Good planning and negotiation with our travel agent and the AITO company. Excellent tours by the local company, Lima Tours, both transport, drivers and especially competent knowledgeable and interactive guides. 4 day mountain trek, endless historical, architectural, geological and natural world experiences. Excellent food and restaurants. All good value for money. Not a boring or poor quality day in 21 days.

Stunning scenery, excellent trips with very well informed and interesting guides. The organisation for transfers etc. was faultless. The people were very friendly and most helpful. The cruise on the Cachalote 1 was fantastic with yet another well informed and interesting guide who organised many activities, including snorkelling and kayaking. The boat's crew were excellent producing food of really good quality. All in all the holiday exceeded our wildest expectations and would happily go back tomorrow!!

Rating for tour operator:

The holiday was booked through Nomadic Travel who arranged everything with Distinctive Americas. The documentation was good with the added nice touch of a Latin American Spanish Phrase Book. Their arrangements with the local tour operators could not be faulted.

Distinctive World Travel responded to this review on 15 Oct 2015:

We are delighted to hear that you had such a fantastic holiday. Peru & Galapagos are a wonderful combination as they include some of the most iconic sites & sights in Latin America. And a Galapagos cruise truly is a one-in-a-lifetime experience - particularly on a well operated vessel like Cachalote I, which has proven to be a real favourite with our clients over the years.

Distinctive World Travel responded to this review on 15 Oct 2015:

We are extremely pleased to hear that our local ground handlers looked after you so well. We select all our suppliers carefully as they are our representatives overseas. Our suppliers in Peru, Ecuador & Galapagos are particularly good and the genuine friendliness and professionalism of all their guides, drivers and office staff really helps to create a special holiday experience for our clients. We're also pleased to hear that you liked the complimentary phrase book - hope you had fun practicing your Spanish!

Distinctive Americas provided excellent guidance as we looked to understand what was possible for us to do as a family in Costa Rica and developed a bespoke itinerary that was absolutely brilliant. Once in Costa Rica everything rang like clock work and it just left us able to enjoy the holiday and all the amazing experiences we had. Our best holiday to date.

We boarded our boat, The Anahi, which was a beautiful boat with a wonderful, varied menu, helpful and friendly staff and the most wonderful guide, Galo. We visited Santa Cruz, Isabella, Fernandino, North Seymour and Bartolome and saw all the wildlife and nature that we expected to see. The weather was perfect with not a drop of rain. It was truly wonderful and we finished off our tour with a stay at the Finch Bay Eco Hotel. This hotel is very comfortable with its own pool and situated on the beach. My only reservation was the price of the meals; lunch was 40$ per person whilst dinner as 42$ per person. However, the town is just a few minutes boat ride away with plenty of restaurants suiting all tastes.

The Staff at Distinctive Americas, particularly Daniel and Michael who we were dealing with, are the most patient and polite and helpful people I have come across in a travel firm. They dealt with my dithering over itinerary, flights, budgets and boat for many weeks, constantly changing things without any sign of impatience! They were at all times polite and helpful and any query, no matter how small and insignificant, was dealt with usually within 24 hours or less. If we were to travel again to the Americas we would only every use Distinctive Americas to help us with our trip. 110/100!

We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your cruise on the Anahi and had such a wonderful holiday. We only offer our clients boats that we know will deliver a truly excellent all round experience. Galapagos is a spectacular destination and the combination of cruise and hotel stay on the islands is a great way to explore them fully.

Then off to Cuzco, to acclimatise and sightsee, followed by a 4 day/3 night hike with Enigma Adventures. A truly amazing, if arduous experience, nothing beats walking to Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate, rather than bus it. We stayed a night at Machu Picchu at the only hotel there, The Sanctuary Lodge, an expensive, but worthwhile extravagance, especially as we got married there to. Taking the train from there into the Sacred Valley, you can relax post trail at a number of hotels, but we had selected for us the Sol Y Luna, a very relaxing property, that even has stables. We were sorry to leave Peru and what can only be described as a trip of a lifetime!

Rating for tour operator:

Distinctive Americas organised our trip when other 'tailor made' agents couldn't put together all that we wanted. We pushed the budget up ourselves and didn't feel they were 'selling' us the holiday, which gave us the confidence to work with their suggestions. The itinerary they provided gave us exactly what we wanted and their agents in Peru really did look after us, we were never left waiting for someone to appear, at each arrival point they were waiting. So impressed with everything that we will not look at anyone else when we book another South America holiday, unless of course they don't actually go where we want to go!

We are delighted to hear that you had such a fantastic holiday in Peru. It is a wonderful country that has it all; spectacular scenery, a wealth of history & culture, plentiful wildlife, luxurious lodges & hotels, fantastic food and truly friendly people. And Machu Picchu was an inspired choice for your wedding venue!
