Meticulous planning makes a great walk in Dorset

We chose this walking tour because our family heritage is rooted in Dorset. Our entire experience was pleasurable and memorable and OFH made this possible.

Rating for tour operator:

From start to finish, our tour operator was attentive, thorough, and detailed. They anticipated our every possible need and even provided information for scheduling our transportation needs before and after our walking tour. On Foot Holidays exceeded our expectations!

Perfect Walk in Dorset

My wife and I, along with a friend, did the 4 night/3 day walk in Dorset, England. We had an amazing walk and also got lucky with the weather. We had done a walk with On Foot Holidays last year in the Alpes Maritimes and loved it. This walk was very different than that, but also great. It was so interesting to be walking through fields and farmland and sharing that with livestock! The route notes were very detailed, as they needed to be, but we did rely more on the GPS file. Even with all the directions, we never got lost. The first two days were similar, walking through fields and tracks. The last day, from Bridport to Lyme Regis, was very different, but spectacular. Again, we got lucky with the weather, so walking the coastal route that day was perfect. It was a little windy at times, but nothing too bad. There were 4 fairly steep climbs this day, but none too challenging. As we ascended The Golden Cap, we met up with a family that was taking their 91 year old father up to the top. It was quite inspiring! All the accommodations were great. We spent two nights in Dorchester prior to the start and then 2 nights in Lyme Regis at the end. I would highly recommend this walk!

This was our second trip with On Foot Holidays and we will absolutely be back for more! They were great in every aspect. We had some questions about which route to choose and Debbie from OFH was so helpful in helping us select the right one for us. As I mentioned, the accommodations were really great and everyone was so nice. Thank you so much to the On Foot Holidays Team!

Wonderful walking holiday through Dorset

We walked from town to town and our luggage was taken on ahead. We stayed in fantastic hotels and country inns, and enjoyed some wonderful meals (and fabulous breakfasts). We were provided with detailed route maps and directions, and notes about sights en route, including detailed information about how to use GPS on our phones and an online ordnance survey map. This was our first walking holiday but one of the most enjoyable trips we've ever taken, in large part due to the excellence of the planning and support from On Foot Holidays. We can't wait for next year!

Rating for tour operator:

On Foot Holidays were excellent from start to finish. They were quick and helpful in developing an itinerary that suited us perfectly. They remained in contact before and during our trip, even contacting us as soon as rail strikes were announced on one of our travel dates. They kept an eye out for us through the trip and warned us when the weather looked threatening. All of the arrangements were spot-on and the accommodations and luggage transfers were excellent. It was obvious that they had a good reputation with the hotels we stayed at, and the service throughout was superb. The quality and detail of the information provided about our chosen routes could not have been better, and we were assigned a local contact to answer queries en route. This was our first ever walking holiday and we felt safe and looked after, and never had a moment's anxiety from booking to the end of our trip. We cannot praise them highly enough and would gladly book another trip with this company.

A multi-day hike across the Dorset countryside

We booked from Australia through On Foot Holidays who made all our accommodation and transfer arrangements in advance and arranged for the carriage of all but our day-packs from accommodation to accommodation. The selection of different accommodation types was excellent and all administration was conducted cheerfully and efficiently. Map and route descriptions were up to date and helpful.

Idyllic Dorset

We enjoyed a wonderful 5 day walk through the hills and valleys of beautiful Dorset, on a custom-crafted route organized by the fabulous team at On Foot Holidays. Our pleasure in the scenery was heightened by the gorgeous weather and the comfortable B&Bs and inns we were happy to reach at the end of the each day.

Excellent self-guided walking tour in Dorset, UK

We had a lovely 6 day, 7 night self-guided inn to inn walking tour in Dorset, UK in September 2022. The countryside and villages were beautiful and full of history. We began the walk in Tisbury and continued on until we reached the coast where we relaxed for a couple days following our walk.

On Foot Holidays handled all the arrangements for lodging and dinners, baggage transfers and, taxi transfers. They provided all information related to travel (getting to the start of the walk, transfers back to the airport, etc). They gave us a very thorough history of the areas we walked. The route notes were excellent and often suggested in the notes places to stop for coffee or a picnic lunch. On Foot also provided information on restaurants, shops, tipping, local customs, etc.

Lovely walk through Dorset, even with uncertain weather.

On Foot's Dorset holiday has delightful views, lovely countryside, friendly people, and interesting stops, sometimes at historical and literary venues (Dorset is Thomas Hardy country, and Lyme Regis has all kinds of literary associations including Jane Austen). The beginning, at Salisbury, gives you time to check out that magnificent cathedral, also a plus. But there were also happy surprises, like Bridport's lovely Georgian architecture. It's England, though, so the weather is... well, English, and we got caught in quite a downpour our first day out. Luckily, our wonderful on-the-ground representative kept in touch with us, and helped us shorten that walk, as well as making other useful tweaks to our itinerary on the coming days (we're in our late 70s and this is our first hike since before the pandemic). So it all turned out terrific, culminating in sun and clear skies on our last two walks, and we would recommend this holiday (and On Foot Holidays) to all hikers. Note also that the food is wonderful at the Acorn Inn at Evershot, and we loved our spacious and super-comfortable room at the Bridge Hotel in Bridport.

So smart, helpful, and friendly, both during the planning stage and during the trip itself. Thank you so much, Harriet!

The communication with On Foot Holiday was as smooth as anything I have ever experienced. They got back to me with inquiries large and small in a timely manner. The route notes were extraordinary, mind you, I am a first time walker plus I did this solo yet managed never to get lost. I credit this to the clarity of OFH's directions. Very little road walking. Just an extremely well mapped out route taking me through spectacular countryside. The inns chosen by OFH were absolutely spot on.

All aspects of the holiday were meticulously organised by On Foot Holidays, with nothing whatsoever going wrong. The route was broadly from the NE to SW corners of Dorset & rural throughout. The route was set to enable us to visit all the cultural sites in the locality of the walk, increasing the interest and diversity. We also encountered numerous references to Thomas Hardy, reflected in the walk title ‘In the Footsteps of Thomas Hardy’.

Rating for tour operator:

My wife & I are regular walkers of long distance paths. When we walk on major routes (eg South West Coast Path) we arrange everything ourselves. On this occasion, we wanted to walk in unknown (for us) rural Dorset., so decided it would be better to enlist the help of a tour operator. We couldn’t have found one better than On Foot Holidays. Accommodation, luggage transfer, route maps & directions were all excellent. Even better was the walk route. There is no way a stranger to the area could have devised such a complex and interesting walk themselves. It was over relatively minor public footpaths, many of which were unsigned. A real testament to the effort put in by On Foot.
