Within the predominantly French-speaking and popular Valais region of southern Switzerland lies the less well-known German part. Its population comprises just one third of the whole canton (which is known to them by its German name, Wallis) and they are proud of the area’s understated charms, including the tranquil and beautiful Goms Valley. Besides its beauty, this high valley boasts a strong snow record and a long tradition of cross-country skiing – indeed, many consider its terrain to be the best in Switzerland. Trails link the many pretty villages, as does the railway line – the famous Glacier Express takes this route through southern Switzerland.
Midway along the valley, not far from the mighty Rhône Glacier, is the peaceful village of Blitzingen, one in a string of ancient settlements whose wooden houses are the colour of roasted chestnuts. Perched above it, with commanding views up and down the valley, is the 4-star Hotel Castle, the epitome of warm hospitality and good taste.
